Does anyone else find it unusual that I just saw an 18 wheel, flat bed tractor trailer on Eastern Parkway?
With a police escort?
Carrying a M113 military armored personnel carrier? like this one
Headed East?
I didn't have my phone with me to get photo.
The city isn't playing around. It is getting ready for a variety of things that might happen....
-
that's an easy one: marshall law
-
Military is moving their expensive equipment from low lying areas where it would be susceptible to damage. OR perhaps they're gearing up for zombie onslaught.
-
Or complying with governor's orders, as described in detail here:

I was wondering that, too.All greenmarkets totally closed all weekend.
http://www.grownyc.org/greenmarket
Storm advisory: Saturday 8/27 and Sunday 8/28 all Greenmarkets will be CLOSED, and all GrowNYC events and activities are cancelled.
The Union Square Greenmarket on Monday 8/29 may be closed or open late, depending on the severity of the storm and cleanup. We will update this page as we learn more.
Just saw this on twitter:
GAPGreenmarket Greenmarket Staff
UPDATE: @GAPGreenmarket now OPEN tmrw 8am-11am. Come&support yr farmers! No EBT/debit/credit or compost/textiles collection. RETWEET PLS! -
lol obviously
. we are on long island. but if you consider continents are also a island if you just look at the bigger picture
. point is brooklyn is much bigger and not as dense as manhattan.
-
Early reports: Irene has been downgraded to Category 1, and has knocked over a few trailers in the Outer Banks.
It could get bad, very bad, but so far it is underwhelming.
-
I saw ESU trucks hauling Zodiacs out of GAP yesterday. I think they were heading south on Flatbush. Probably setting up shop around Manhattan Beach & the Rockaways. Maybe even Floyd Bennett. Although I'd think the field would be the first to go if the water level rises.
-
So I'm curious. What's your hurricane preparedness list?
Me: so far I have extra water, toilet paper, ramen(LOL!)
flashlights, cell phones charging, clean towels, wine(haha)
and I'll pic up some snacks just in case. -

i didn't go out and brought stuff like everyone
. i think its over rated and not much you can do anyway. but i have tons of candles i offer my tenants. only one apt took up on my offer
. gonna drive it over today later on soon as my lazy ass get off the computer. besides that, if its bad. power is going to be out for a few days, gas is most likely still gonna work. matches still can light the gas
. still can boil water.have alot rice and ramen to begin with
so no worry there lol. -
Woohoo, they picked up our trash this morning which made it much easier to stack the cans together and bring them inside the stoop.
-
There was quite a fleet of (non NYC or parks dept.) bucket trucks lined up on the park drive. I guess they've brought in back-up for post storm clean-up, which I approve of.
-
I wanted to grab snacks like chips, crackers, etc.. so I didn't have to cook, but at 9:30am Key Foods was a clusterfuck.
I'm hoping it's not as bad as it sounds.

State Police and the National Guard have been ordered to muster in LI in preparation for the eye hitting there.

Homeowner-
Yes, the resources they are deploying are pretty massive : http://www.governor.ny.gov/press/082611hurricaneirenecabinetmeeting -
I'm sad how the media doesn't care about anything south of New York right now. Every news story is, "NYC is shutting down the subways, Mayor Bloomberg says..., this random person in NYC is worried... it could be really bad... and oh, by the way, it's hitting NC right now but we're not going to talk about what it's like there, lets instead be paranoid about the Northeast." By the time it gets to us, it's going to be nothing. I think the reaction to this storm is largely political. And I wish Obama would quit being quoted as calling this a historical hurricane.
Anyway, this was briefly mentioned on previous pages, but I am seriously wondering what people with dogs and no backyards plan to do! I suppose we'll just have to wait and see what the winds are like, but I don't want to be the aforementioned dead person who gets hit by a falling branch when going to out to get something, in this case, letting my dog pee. My plan is to try to coax her into going in the bathtub?
-
Pee pads?
-
My Maltese, Boris and Freddy have their own cache of Wee Wee pads. They are willing to share if any dog owners want some!
-
Finding it hard to believe that so many people are leaving their trash cans outside. Maybe they're planning on bringing them in later.... when they're soaking wet.
Seriously people, garbage cans should not be outside after today.
-
People who have never been thru a hurricane don't know what basic steps to take, and which are hysterical.
Hopefully this will be a medium size event, so that folks can handle the next one better.
...yes, I expect to see lots of flying garbage cans.
In relatively non-windy periods, I'll try to take the dog out. We shall see "where he decides to go"
-
We are not all home owners. Renters are doing what they can (pun intended)

Has anyone bought coconuts, tropical plants, sea shells, pineapples, and coral to distribute around afterwards?
"8/29/11: Gothamist reports people in Prospect Park Found Coconuts in the Long Meadow, presumably carried from the Caribbean."
(remember to take the price tags off for the best effect)

Yeah, but a category 1 is still 75 mph winds. And this storm is abnormally large which means tons of rain.
But yes, hopefully it won't be blowing any buildings away.

also my father is a total failure lol, god damn literally no education straight from the chinese countryside. he halfass sand bag near a basement exit. too full of fail to mention why.
-
The streets will be rivers. A lake was forming at the intersection of 1st St and 8th Ave after the last rain shower.
-
witchking-
If you decide to get around by building your own hovercraft, please build a cage for the propeller. Don't end up like this guy:
http://blog.ziggytek.com/2011/08/05/auckland-man-decapitated-while-testing-hovercraft/
-
All I'm saying is if 4th Ave became a river when we had a momentary flash flood last year, what can you expect from a long-term heavy downpour.
-
Yeah my dog won't go on wee wee pads. She's more likely to just go on a rug or the floor, but I'm going to go with trying to run her out during non-windy periods, too. When it gets bad out and she has to pee, she's pretty good about doing it extremely quickly near my building so hopefully all will be well, and my section of 4th ave hasn't seen flooding in the last year despite the above video so hopefully we'll be good.
Howdy, Stranger!
