Area info/ safety
Hi all!
I have been in Brooklyn 2 years already and used to live on willoughby at taafe, moved out and looking now..I might have found a place on Greene Ave at Tompkins Ave but this isn't clinton hill anymore its bedstuy..I'm a big guy, grew up in Jersey but just want some insight: how safe is this area? the deal on the apartment seems to good to be true..real close to some recreation center..I would be traveling about 10 blocks to school and coming back real late..so general info and safety? Anyone know how it is around there? Quiet..busy..etc And thoughts on having my girl swing by late sometimes?
Thanks all!

I'm not intimately familiar with that exact intersection, but I happily live in Bed-Stuy. Unless you're dealing drugs on the corners at 4am it's no worse than a lot of the rest of Brooklyn.
There's a precinct house right at that intersection and there are always cops standing around.
Von King park is noisy (and dirty) in the summer. It (rightfully) hosts lots of parties and hang outs. It's noisy, but the upside is that you'd have a park right near you.
I ride my bike through that area all the time. My advice is to go walk around at like 9 or 10pm and see how comfortable you feel.
Your girl walking around as as single lady is different than you or I, obviously. You know, it's your standard thing: She's better off walking over at 9pm rather than 1am or 3am.But be aware of your surroundings. Say hi to people that act friendly. Be a good neighbor, and that's the most you can do, IMO.
At this point I'd argue that a lot of Bed-Stuy is no different many parts of Clinton Hill, especially northern and eastern Clinton Hill. -
Thank you for such a quick response! I really appreciate that

Any other opinions anyone?

The 81st Precinct is two blocks away on Tompkins. Don't know if that helps

Hey! I was living on the corner of Lafayette and Tomkins from April through August (now at Gates and Nostrand), and while the area has a bad crime rap I agree with a lot Boygabriel said about it. Tompkins park is a huuuuge family attraction for people who have a lot of pride invested in the community, and a lot of those people are still out and about in the late evening. don't know your race but being white does attract attention, but as a petite 20ish white girl I've never encountered anything I can't handle. the constant cop patrols don't hurt, either. never made it a habit to walk around alone after midnight though, thats when you start to see a restless crowd. make sure your girl doesn't do what I see a lot of young hip girls do: walk down the street late at night with a giant pair of headphones on. glancing over her shoulder nervously every minute or so. just be vigilant because people are poor and that shit's just dumb.

Tompkins Park also has a rep for hookers and druggies hanging out in the park at night so keep that in mind.
