Old Theater on Underhill

barnable
edited November -1 in Prospect Heights

Walked by and some work is going on. Asked what and was told a bordello was being built. Anybody got a clue?

  • Hair Salon.

  • I had heard we were getting a hair salon in the former "video arcade repair place"; this place is right next to the tiny former theater.

Are we getting two hair salons?

Does anyone know what is going in the video arcade place?

  • The building adjacent to Blue Marble will be a recording studio. There used to be a recording studio on the other side of Blue Marble, which has been replaced by the yoga studio.

  • Man, that block is just an extended game of switcheroo. A sports bar would be nice. Just saying.

  • ...switch-a-roo...

  • Recording studio? Just what the hood needs.......

  • Sports bar wouldn't be possible at that location since it is within 200 feet of Duryea church and therefore can't get a liquor license. Hope the owner knows this.

  • not sure if this is correct and i'm certainly not taking out a tape measure

Are there any restrictions on the location of my premises? Applicants for a liquor store license, wine store license and on-premises license cannot be within 200 feet of a school, church, synagogue or other place of worship.

In any case the bar that occupied Cheryl's----"Carl's Place" prior to being Cheryls I guess you could call a sports bar (? Dunno - I don't watch sports so I wasn't really paying attention -lol). No One went to it. People would rather be breathing down one others necks at Sepia -- me I was happy eating wings or whatever at the place that "wasn't Sepia"

  • Do the same restrictions exist on houses of worship?

I.E. If I had a bar, and wanted people to drink lots and not be bothered by thoughts of whether drinking would be against Yahweh's/God's/Allah's wishes, could I force houses of worship to go through a rigorous process before they could open near me?

  • I think you'd have a credibility problem if you tried to combine liquor with the worship of Allah.

  • Why is Richard Dawkins Opening up a pub?

I agree. And many christian churches host AA meetings in their basements.

As a bar owner, I would seek to create a pristine environment in which I could practice my faith in humanity's desire to be intoxicated. Hence, I would seek to minimize the influence of anti-alcohol forces by creating such a 200 foot rule.

I have no doubt that proposing this rule would cause some to believe that I was anti-religion, despite me repeatedly assuring them that this is not the case.

P.S. Although he is British, Richard Dawkins' would make an excellent bar name! Stencil a few shamrocks on the awning and we are good to go...

  • Brilliant :)

They have found a way to combine intoxication and religion, by selecting Christianity! I like it.

Why do people say Americans have lost their ability to innovate?!

Being that some locally popular houses of worship (Christian, Jewish) serve alcohol during the course of their services, I think this location could attract a loyal following.

I also suspect that CB8 would no have grounds to not recommend me for an alcohol permit, or tell me that I had to be 200 ft from ANYONE.

    ...this is genius.

This city database is a better way to measure distance. Your directions are longer than 200 feet because you're walking along the sidewalk and rounding the corner to the Sterling entrance. The State liquor authority measures the 200 feet from door to door as the crow flies.

It's good to know that it would only take 56 seconds to make it from the bar to church, in case of an emergency.

  • In an emergency, are you sure it wouldn't be appropriate to instead run from the church to the bar?

  • My parents' paster and I email quite regularly. Sharing beer recipes. He's an avid brewer. So are many people at the church. And all of their social/fellowship events are drinking-related. They went to a wine-tasting event last weekend as a church group.

Although their communion uses grape juice.....

  • Do you think they would be interested in becoming a partner or paying me to open a franchise once I expand?

  • @danaeo the tool (that question mark thingie) that NYC GIS has to measure distance isn't very accurate (it uses miles not feet).

but the map does have a Feet Legend on the bottom ---

I took out my ruler (an actual ruler that I put up on the screen) and measured about 1.7 inch or say 80 Feet

Carl's Place wasn't a sports bar, to my (often faulty) memory. It was more of a wings/soul food joint, wasn't it? I thought the food was good, but even when there was never anyone in there, it'd still take an hour or more to get our order. That's too long to wait in an empty restaurant.

Strangely, I've never patronized Cheryl's, despite it being open for years now.

  • Dang. It was just a suggestion.

  • I talked with one of the construction guys: He confirmed the old theater is in the process of becoming a restaurant.

I looked in when the door was open: It appears they are in the carpentry stage.
