Thousands attending the West Indian Carnival events behind the museum. The events started Thursday night, and go through Monday.

nobody should be playing that late, don't care if people use cultural events as a excuse.
unless say they are moon worshippers who can only do it at night etc.. other than that, if they can be done normally during the day time. respect everyone else. it makes life easier for everyone.

thanks guys. just moved here from the UWS. as much as i appreciate the "liveliness" of the 'hood (especially since this is not a regular occurrence) i'm absolutely shocked that there's no curfew for outdoor shows here. i live at least 5 blocks away from the "venue" and it was LOUD. in my old neighborhood, you'd end up in Riker's for that!
-
It will be over soon. People come from all over the world to the festivities this weekend. The rest of the year should be quieter. Though if you are new to the nabe I can imagine you'd be worried... But in this case, if you can't beat em - join em ! I Or you can stay home and sulk.

West Indian Day Carnival; “Murder Day Parade”
before the nabe started gentrifing a couple years ago police used to ask me to show ID just to enter my block during this parade

Man opens fire at Brooklyn parade, toll rises to 39 shot since Saturday morning -
It is sad that our society's culture of violence interrupts events that try to let people escape by dressing in fantasy costumes.
To where, and how, does one truly escape?
-
A huge smile came to me on my BF's face when we plopped down at home, on the couch, after walking around crown heights and still heard the parade. Awesome. It's a happy sound.

....Santa even comes at the end!
But, as always, I had good time at this year's parade.
Perhaps as a result of the prediction of rain, the event was not super crowded like years past.
Perhaps as a result of not being super crowded and the cooler weather, there seemed to be good vibe in the air.
I also saw a lot more women wearing just pasties as tops. This could have also contributed to the good mood that I and others experienced.

Commissioner of the New York City Police Department doesn't expect much less from this parade:
>>>Kelly said some of the shootings were associated with the West Indian Day festivities.
"Frankly," he said, "this is something that does happen at this parade."<<<

The night goes on?
There was just a shooting at 9:15 PM, near Franklin Avenue

I suppose this clusterphuck is now a full scale riot and not just isolated incidents.
-
A riot is a form of civil disorder characterized often by what is thought of as disorganized groups lashing out in a sudden and intense rash of violence against authority, property or people. While individuals may attempt to lead or control a riot, riots are thought to be typically chaotic and exhibit herd behaviour, and usually generated by civil unrest. However, there is a growing body of evidence to suggest that riots are not irrational, herd-like behaviour, but follow inverted social norms.[1]
Riots often occur in reaction to a perceived grievance or out of dissent. Historically, riots have occurred due to poor working or living conditions, government, oppression, taxation or conscription, conflicts between ethnic groups, food supply or religions (see race riot, sectarian violence and pogrom), the outcome of a sporting event (see football hooliganism) or frustration with legal channels through which to air grievances.
Riots typically involve vandalism and the destruction of private and public property. The specific property to be targeted varies depending on the riot and the inclinations of those involved. Targets can include shops, cars, restaurants, state-owned institutions, and religious buildings.

I think you are the first to use the term "riot" to apply to today's parade, and there is probably a definition out there that could be applied that meets the definition for riot.
While I prefer the term "surge of violence", I wonder what terms the TV and print media will to describe all of today's violent events.....
I doubt they will bother to discuss them as separate incidents; they will instead paint the whole parade as being violent.
...which it wasn't.
Here's a story about carnival that was written after some of the violent incidents, but before tonight's incidents.

I'd suggest that the common factor is young people with limited education, easy access to guns, very little to no parental involvement, and an inability to exercise self-control. Its a dangerous combination and the fact that folks continue to believe we can under-educate, under-employ and under-parent multiple generations of people and then expect them to behave in a manner in keeping with societal norms is what is going to cause this city to regress.

Homeowner-
I completely agree, and fear such cycles may be far easier to create than stop. -
@Wayfarers welcome to the neighborhood. It usually gets better from here with exception of New Years eve when thugs are known to go to rooftops and shoot guns in the air.
Surprisingly over at CH thread they have folks wining about cops raiding rooftop parties. I bet said complainers haven't been around the nabe during New Years.

Thanks, Inpixels! we love the 'hood, just didn't know about the "parade" and wondered what the heck could have been going on until 3AM on Friday and Saturday. This certainly explains it.
i do have to admit that i always find it annoyingly condescending when people make comments (like "WR"), implying that someone who objects to pandemonium at 3AM is in the wrong, or "should just stay home and sulk." i'd like "WR" to know that i've spent 5 years of my life living and working in India and throughout Africa, and I'm not some silver spoon, hedge funder, who is too boring "UWS," for "edgy" Brooklyn. dare i say, i get cultural "cacophonies" at least as well, if not better, than any BK hipsters or homesteaders.
... At the same time, I have a two-year old who is not interested in joining, or capable of appreciating, a drunken fray at 3AM.

We always vacationed at this time of year and avoided the festival and parade. Because we've been badly hit by the downturn, we had to stay home. It was hell. Frankly, I don't mind the parade because it's over by 7 pm or so and it's great fun. But the outdoor concerts behind the Museum are unacceptable and unfair for those of us who live nearby and can't afford to get away. That includes a lot of working families and seniors and people who had to get up the next morning for work. The Festival actually advertises that the concerts will end at 3 AM (its on their website); its simply wrong and goes against everything we love about our city and our wonderful community. I'd like to find a comparable event in Manhattan where the peace and quiet of an entire neighborhood is hijacked for five straight days.
Howdy, Stranger!
