Chevelas on Franklin Ave Rocks ! Now all Franklin needs is a French Bistro....

Really I tried 3 times to get into the new Chevelas on Franklin Avenue and finally managed on Friday. Wonderful to get real Mexican food in Crown Heights North ! The taquitos are delicious. I just ordered another 2 sets for delivery a moment ago. The vibe of the place on Friday was great - a mixed age group of young things and their parents, and all sorts of people filled the place. Now all we need is a Chez Oscar kind of place in the hood - where you can get a good martini at the bar and a steak frites at the table.

(No martinis a Chevelas - just tequila tequila tequila. ....:-). I am very happy for the neighborhood to see such changes. And for those who thought Franklin couldnt support such places, just go see Chevelas for yourself on a Friday, Sat, Sunday etc nite....

  • I've been to the new location 3 times since they've opened - we've been happy each trip.

You can find decent (and better) martinis easily enough, but a place that serves good tequila is too rare! Go have some Corralejo Reposado, neat. Sip, don't shoot! It's a great, not too expensive example of what good tequila can be.

  • We've been twice since they opened the new location. I had comments in my head and they read my mind between trip 1 and 2 -- they redid the menu to be easier to read in dim lighting and they put benches outside for people waiting. I think it'll stay crowded for a while - even on a Monday at 6pm we waited 25 minutes for a table. There was a nice sit-down place (I hear the management wasn't nice, but I enjoyed the food a lot) at Park and Franklin a few years back -- I think it's always been the case that good sit-down food will work, but it had to be GOOD food and it had to be a nice setting -- Chavela's has that.

Has anyone been to NoBar on Nostrand? They seem more liquor than beers/wines - wonder how their martini holds up...
