Plane noise!

Anyone else notice a sudden loud increase in planes flying low over the north slope? All this week it is one plane after another and it started on Monday. . .I'm near the park on union.

  • Seriously, I'm starting to think 'curbed' and 'gawker' are just planting these threads because it's a sloww news day and they know what buttons to push in PS...

Let's start talking about dog shit, crocs, and strollers while we're at it.
  • I'm sure it's related to getting diplomats into and out of the city for the UN General Assembly.
  • Yeah! This morning, in particular, was terrible. Really loud. At first, I thought it was military planes. But I think it was just jets, one after another. It was early, say 6 or so, and it stopped at about 7. Kind of strange.
  • Noise always sounds louder when you're sleeping.
  • If you're in Prospect Park by the Union Street entrance or in Underhill playground, plane after plane goes overhead.
  • OMG today was particularly louder than usual. And it started more like 5:30ish. Large helicopters (and I agree with BrooklynGigCenter as to why), tons of planes flying lower than usual. It's annoying, and smelly, and loud. I can only imagine the decibles...
Ever walk in the Park early in the morning? you can practically see the serial numbers on the bottom of the planes!!!
  • I was not sleeping. And they were louder than ever. Ther is no doubt about it.
  • Oh, yeah -- it really is louder lately. Helicopters also seem unusually deafening. In fact, just today I was walking down 7th Av trying to have a conveRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRely hear a thing. Annoying to say the least.
  • agree. it's a little unusual. i've always heard planes every now and then, but the last couple of days have been really LOUD. i suspect it may be caused by the UN thing. so hopefully this is only temporary.
  • United Nations General Assembly
One reason for more air traffic, especially large helicopters.
One reason to keep air traffic away from the usual up-the-Hudson route.
    We take the hit.
  • Planes were very loud this morning. When I was getting ready for work about 6:00 AM, I heard several fly over (south slope) within a few mintues of each other and I had all my windows closed. I generally never hear planes like that in the morning, but sometimes hear the choppers.

Oooooh man! I thought I was going insane. This morning freakin' loud ass planes. I was laying in bed and all of a sudden "Braaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaam". I looked out the window to check how low they were cuz they sounded real close.I couldn't see them though.I'm not in PS so I think they pass over my building and head over your way or vice versa. It wasn't one plane either. It was like 3 or 4.

It depends where you live. If you live between 8th Ave and Prospect Park West, they're coming over at 2000ish feet at the rate of approx 1 per minute, since 6:30AM.
  • yeah, i live between 8th and ppw, it was noisy earlier today, but got somewhat quieter towards the end of the day, like, now... i hope it stays that way.
  • I have noticed much more helicopter traffic since this UN thing but frankly, I don't think things have changed all that much. We are in a flight patter... kind of over the Prospect Park. Over near 30 years living here I would say the closer you live to the park the more potential to hear them.
  • This map ran with the Times's story today about Shea Stadium serving as a landmark for pilots approaching LaGuardia. Note the flight path passing over Prospect Park and the notation "Overfly Prospect Park to the extent possible." Except these days it seems to be "Overfly the block just west of Prospect Park to the extent possible."

Not that it really bugs me. It's kind of faded into the background, though I have noticed that the planes seem louder recently.

How about the m*therf*ckin bugs in the park! anyone notice how loud they are lately?!? what the hell man! I'm by myself trying to put my testicles to sleep and damn bugs keep putting them on alert mode. This is NOT, I repeat, NOT the Park Slope I loved 2 weeks ago.
  • I've lived here in Lefferts Gardens for over a year and just tonight, since about 2am maybe....low flying, LOUD planes, one after another...its constant. It's 5am now and the noise hasn't let up. I was so disturbed by it I looked online to see if there was a reason that tonight in particular I am hearing SO many planes to the point that its keeping me awake. Curious all these posts on the subject were 2 years ago, but something seems up tonight...it's not normal.

  • LMS, was it helicopters? J'ouvert was last night and that might have drawn helicopters.

  • Those were helicopters looking for perpetrators of a shooting at MCdonalds this morning at Empire and Washington ave. I believe they apprehended them. See Gothamist News Map:
