The 44th annual 2011 West Indian Day Parade

  • This is my first parade weekend living this close to Eastern Parkway. I was expecting a party on Monday, and probably Sunday, but what's with the current parade going down St. Johns?

I warned the S.O. this would be The Loudest Weekend Ever. Even the dog, who ignores thunder and fireworks was a little concerned to be waking up to the bands and dj's.

    A Couple of Questions:

I was going to have my father drop something off with the car on Sunday. From past experiences, do you know if they would even allow cars to drop off on Lincoln pl. on Sunday?

To be fair, we did dance while getting dressed this morning, and I at least, knew some noise was coming, but does anyone know how long this particular event (the St. Johns mini parade) lasts?

    Thanks so much

That was the Kiddie Carnival Parade. It marches from the Brooklyn Children's Museum.

    Formation:

    • St. John's Place and Kingston Avenue

    Route:

    • St. John's Place between Kingston Avenue and Franklin Avenue

    • Franklin Avenue between St. John's Place and President Street

    • President Street between Franklin Avenue and Washington Avenue

    Dispersal:

    • At Brooklyn Museum Yard

The above streets will be closed Saturday from 10am to 4pm for the West Indian Children's Day Parade as permitted by NYPD.

Also, NYC DOT has the following "Miscellaneous" (meaning not construction-related) changes for the weekend:

    • Ocean Avenue between Empire Boulevard and Parkside Avenue

    • Butler Place between Grand Army Plaza and Sterling Place

    • St. John’s Place between Underhill Avenue and Grand Army Place

    • Rochester Avenue between East New York Avenue and Sterling Place

    • Parkside Avenue between Park Circle and Flatbush Avenue

    • Bedford Avenue between Eastern Parkway and Empire Boulevard

    • Empire Boulevard between Flatbush Avenue and Nostrand Avenue

The above streets will be closed Monday from 10am to 6pm for the West Indian Carnival and Parade as permitted by NYPD.

  • few times that i had to goto the building in ph and couldn't drive through, they only allow residents through, once i had a bunch of leases on me, i show it to them and they let me through other times, i just had to park far far way and walk over.

When I had an apartment on Vanderbilt ave I had a roommate who postponed moving until the parade day. He was all in a tizzy that they wouldn't let him drive the moving truck onto Vanderbilt. The whole weekend before he had been out partying. So I kept half his deposit. He had all weekend to move and chose to do it on Labor day, not thinking about the parade. Not my fault.

But yeah, I'm thinking that every time I leave the building I'll take my ID and a utility bill (the address on the ID isn't current).

Right now, though, I'm more worried about Sunday and getting a car full of stuff here.

  • In past years, I've found getting around on Sunday to be ok, even on the EP service road.

    ...good luck.

The parade is actually structured like the traditional West Indian carnival so there are a number of events over a number of days. You should expect to see tons of people throughout the neighborhood either going to the Brooklyn Museum events or attending other functions like the kids parade or steel drum exhibitions that are going to be going on Saturday and Sunday.

Traffic won't be impossible until Monday, but I'd still suggest you tell your Dad to get to you earlier (before noon) to make it as simple as possible.

  • I might be getting use to it, but the whole series of events seems pretty tame this year.

Do we have any enthusiasts who made it J'Ouvert?

  • This was the least crowded West Indian Day parade I've been to yet. Still lots of good food, though.

  • Yes, so much for "tame".

It is sad that this parade continues to have violence, when the overwhelming majority just want to have a good time.

As much as I dislike violence, I hope the parade continues. With 39 people shot this weekend throughout the city, I find it hard to blame the parade for having it's share of violent criminals among the 600k attendees.

....costumes, music and food don't have to be accompanied by gun shots.

Hopefully next year will have no violence. I can hope, right?

  • Getting off the violence wave for a second, I think the parade would be tons better if they had live West Indian bands as opposed to the monotonous, heavily bass-ed, canned music with the screaming DJs.

  • Yes, in the past, I remember marching bands with steel drums.

....I didn't seen any this year. Maybe they were there but I missed seeing them?

I'm sorry to return to violence, but, sadly, lots more shootings and violence happened during the parade (and immediately around the parade route) than the incident last night:

former prospect and crown heights resident here... haven't posted on brooklynian in maybe a year because i moved to dc (whose carnival pales in comparison)...

but i was on empire blvd for jouvert. i was actually in the middle of empire across the street from mcdonalds when the guy got shot at 6am. there was temporary hysteria, but people mellowed out again pretty soon and the fun continued for a few more hours...

  • Welcome back Bobby-

I'm glad he didn't ruin the event.

Yes, I'm of the perspective if we cancelled events (or stopped enjoying our lives) just because there is a potential for violence, we would never get to enjoy life.

"Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it is about learning to dance in the rain"

  • i was at out last night too. i started up at the beginning of the parade at GAP at 4am, and danced my way down empire before heading home north on rogers around 9 this morning. i was about a block away from the mcdonald's when that shooting happened, but bobbybrummel is totally right -- people wigged out for a quick second but went back to hanging out shortly thereafter. i also saw a couple fights along the way, but that's what tends to happen later on in the procession, as people have been out longer, drinking more, etc.

this was my 4th j'ouvert (been going since i moved to the neighborhood 4 years ago this weekend) and i've always felt okay about being there. of course there can always be some random asshole with a gun, but i've generally found it to be pretty safe, despite the size/timeframe.

Councilman Jumaane Williams was arrested at the parade because the police wouldn't let him into the museum for a lunch he was invited too and didn't believe his ID.

  • The police are going to end up with a black eye on that one.

  • and of course right after i posted that, i got a note from a friend on franklin and sterling that there was a lots of gunfire on the street outside her apartment. i live down the street from the 77th outpost and there have been nonstop lights/sirens coming and going and helicopters overhead for the past hour+

    :(

she just updated a minute ago:

"The shootout is over... Someone shot someone else and then a cop got shot and then some more people got shot. Everyone is accounted for here. Come on crown heights. Get it together."

I saw a video of Public Advocate de Blasio's Community Affairs Director Kirsten Foy being thrown down to the ground by the one PO. That officer was out of control. It looked like the the other police officers were taken by surprise by the action and even tried to calm things down. That was absolutely uncalled for.

Gothamist has published a bunch of photos showing people having a good time at the parade, either despite or unaware of the violence.

gothamist wrote: Let's not let reports of gunfire and alleged racial profiling overshadow what was, despite a few bad apples, a festive and colorful West Indian-American Day Carnival and parade in Brooklyn yesterday. New Yorkers of Caribbean heritage celebrated their roots with elaborate costumes, food, dancing, calypso music, steel drumming, and gospel music.
The photos capture the parade I was able to enjoy: http://gothamist.com/2011/09/06/photos_celebrating_the_non-violent.php#photo-1

  • The media over hyped this parade and basically did not warn people in attendance that criminality was afoot. If I was warned about the past murders and shootings I would have never attended this sorry excuse for a parade.

Why is it that when I go to the St. Patrick's day parade there is no body count but at this event numerous people lose their lives?

Will some one explain this to me.

As for the two politicians arrested by the museum, they deserved it. From what i hear they were told that they could not go through like everyone else but the politician with the braids got ignorant and basically believed he was special and decided to try and bulldoze the coppers. End result was him getting arrested.

I hate politicians more than cops but on this point the two politicians thought that the closed roads should be parted for them like the red sea. Cops 1, Politicians 0

  • Downward Puppy, I guess you disregarded the other politician who witnessed Jumaane Williams and DiBlasio's aide beng told they could walk through the restricted area by a police officer? I guess facts interfere with your opinion of what uppity black folk deserve for getting above themselves.

Puppy, you sound like the biggest wet blanket in the world. Are you for real?

Next year, you need to leave the wife and kids at home and come out with me at 4am on Jouvert morning. We'll have a real good time and nobody will ever have to know.

Everyone just listen to Bunji and be BRAVE

keep leaning on that crutch when you can't find anything rational to say.

  • It should be interesting to see which side of the story the various races/incomes/etc that compose NYers choose to believe.

The police who state "a punch was thrown"

    OR

    The politicians who state

    they had explicit permission

....I imagine even those who were there (as "unbiased" bystanders) at the incident have different perceptions of what happened.

  • Well, there are a couple of videos floating around the web, and none of them show a punch, just a lot of macho posturing and chest bumping...

  • You think this will end up like the OJ Simpson trial?

....all of America saw the same evidence, yet the break down on whether we thought he was guilty was pretty sharply divided on what Race box we check on the census?

  • Mr Met I know you like trying to call out people. But whats irrational about pointing out eyewitness accounts?

Whynot, I think the breakdown will follow lines of who has been a target of police profiling. So it will follow somewhat that those that have been profiled like Blacks, Latinos, Pakistanis and other visibly "Middle Eastern" looking people might be more likely to believe the Councilman. Then again I know a few white anti-war protesters who have been targeted by police and they totally understand police abuse of powers and are outraged too.

  • The West Indian American Day Carnival Association, has a group Facebook page that allows comments from approved group members. Everyone is able to view.

There was apparently an Emergency Press Conference this morning at Brooklyn Borough Hall this morning. Group members were asked to show their "when we address reports of violence at this year's parade."

By exploring the posts, you can find some interesting comments and overall discussion of the weekend's positive and negative events.

Here are the ideas of a person highly invested in improving the parade's image:

  • This thread started with a reference to the band practicing on Classon and Pacific. Does anybody realize that two people were shot there as well? What a great cultural celebration!
