shots?

  • It did sound really close to me, and I could see the chopper from my window.

  • that is totally terrible and also really conflicting reports-- one article says 2 shooters were shot dead, cop shot in stomach. now others say shot in arm. and now the one dead is a bystander?

  • Probably really hectic and confusing. Still can't believe how many shots. Must have been a war zone.

  • Glad yall are okay, and glad the guy walking his dog got the he'll out of there. Could easily have been me a few hours earlier.

  • it definitely sounded like a lot of shots, like a semi-automatic weapon.

  • besides getting mugged, i have had a lovely time these last few years in crown heights but i really need to move before next west indian day parade weekend.

  • this police scanner is going to give me nightmares. someone was cut in the face with a razor blade.

Pretty much all handguns (that aren't revolvers) are semi-automatic.

The parade is not my favorite event, but it hardly makes me feel unsafe in the neighborhood. It's a couple of days a year and it's easy enough to avoid. So sorry for the innocent loss of life, but that's one reason I won't sit on a stoop near a busy corner of CHN on Labor Day.

I did notice the huge concentration of police events around the neighborhood on the Gothamist newsmap. I wonder if the parade doesn't make the _rest_ of the city safer for the duration, as all of the troublemakers congregate on Eastern Parkway?

  • Just some people celebrating their culture, Move along. Move along.

  • This is a very sad and tragic event that happened on Park Pl between Classon &u Franklin Ave.

My condolences goes all to the families that lost love ones.

Because the shooter was caught, the question I'm now curious about is:

How come anything positive that happens East of Washington Ave (Crown Heights true borders)up to Bedford Ave is hotly championed to have occurred in the Prospect Heights neighborhood, yet

anything negative that happens East of Washington Ave is categorized as having occurred in the Crown heights community?

The double standard, values and assumptions associated with this schizophrenic behavior is simply mind blowing.

Agreed. Undoubtedly the apartments for rent in this block are listed as "Prospect Heights" to get more rent.

  • Does anyone know if anything has been uncovered by the investigation? Seems like if Leroy Webster fired the first shots, so I'm wondering if there is any news on what the police are shutting off several city blocks to investigate.

Is Franklin open now? What about the Park Place shuttle stop?

  • I live on Park. The shuttle is open, but the street is not open to traffic. It's also cordoned off on Franklin too.

  • So the only block closed is Park between Classon and Franklin? Or is part of Franklin closed also?

  • Franklin, at last check, was closed at least from Prospect to Park.

There were a lot of shots fired, and I would imagine the police tend to like to account for all of their trajectories and final destinations.

  • Given the number of shots fired, I expect to see some evidence of the firefight to remain even after the police leave; notably chipped paint and concrete from impacts.

  • To clarify, I'm not complaining about having a block roped off, I'm asking if there has been any additional information gathered from the investigation?

  • I live there. Today was my first day of work at a new job.

I start work at 8am in the East Village.

I left at 6:30am just to be safe.

I walked on Park towards Franklin to get to the 4/5 trains at Eastern Parkway. Police stopped me and said I couldn't pass.

I walked up the steps to the Shuttle and thought I'd be smart and just take the S to the 4/5. I waited 3 minutes. At 6:36 the S train arrived. It sat there. And sat there. The driver got out and shouted down to the police. Asked if he could open the doors. Was told no.

The S train left without us. People on the platform, understandably, began yelling. They had paid the $2.50 to swipe in and then waited for a train that won't take them. Why wouldn't the police have roped it off? This was 9+ hours after the shootings.

I then exited the shuttle station and walked to Classon down to Eastern Parkway and then over to Franklin to get the train.

Luckily, I made it to work on time.

Today I got off the 4 train at Eastern Parkway and Franklin Avenue at 6:45pm. I walked up Franklin until I saw it was still roped off. Had to cut over on Sterling to Classon, walk up to Park, and then cut back over.

The police are now running annoying sirens to get people to look outside and then listen to them on the bull-horn asking them to back their cars off of Park Place onto Classon and then park somewhere else so that the street is clear.

I wonder when things will be back to normal.

    ETA:

Also, my parents in PA called me to find out if I was ok because my apartment made the news out there too. This is apparently big enough to make it on the out-of-state-news programs.

Also, Also, my husband was called by a detective today (Since we had called 911 after hearing the shots) to see if he knew anything. Led me to believe they don't have all of the suspects or know the whole story still. But who knows.

  • Indeed.

At first the story was that both "shooters" and a bystander were killed. In addition, two police officers were wounded.

(3 people killed, 2 officers wounded)

Now, Gothamist has updated their version of the story:

The bystander and one of the shooters reportedly died, but one of the "shooters" is presently alive in the hospital.

(2 people killed, one in hospital, 2 officers wounded)

The wounds of the two police officers are said to be minor.

P.S. Gothamist likely got their information from a more established, reputable news source, but they did not list it.

....I suspect it will be quite sometime before we know which guns fired the bullets that killed the bystander, the shooter who died, the shooter who is alive and in the hospital, and the two officers wounded.

  • So, I apologize that this is possibly off topic. Moderator, if so, delete and my apologies.

I was trying to find some info about Denise Gay, who sounded like a lovely woman. I was hoping some news organization would have a piece on her...haven't found one yet.

Anyway, in my search I looked on the NYPost (mistake) and then read one of the comments (HUGE mistake). One Christina Johnson, "Sales Manager at Bridgestone", had an incredibly, incredibly racist comment, which I won't even repeat. See here -- look at christina johnson comment

If you find this comment offensive, please contact Bridgestone. We can't stop her from spewing this stuff, but we CAN get her in trouble for listing her employer while doing so.

As per this thread Ms. Gay leaves behind a daughter. Donations are being accepted for her daughter, and a community meeting will be held on Thursday.

RE: Christina Johnson, sadly such offensive comments are frequent on the unmoderated websites. Some use their real names, some do not.

    Re: The Post article

NY Post wrote: "Eight officers fired about 70 shots during the shootout"

This would partially explain the intensive investigation xlizellx is seeing and enduring.

    Not Brilliant Thoughts:

If there were 8 police officers shooting, and there were two shooters: We could have 10 separate weapons discharged.

Likewise, if the police fired about 70 rounds, how many additional rounds were fired by the shooters? Could those investigating have over 90 rounds to trace?

Yes, this will take a while to sort out.

  • Does anyone know how to get donations to her daughter?

  • Ah, forget it. Just saw the sticky with Downward Mutt's obnoxious comment.

  • Thank you, Whynot! (As for Christina Johnson, it seems to be her real name, with a link to her facebook, with a picture of her wearing a bridgestone shirt. what an idiot.)

Back to Ms. Gay -- Nytimes has an article with some more news about her, here

"Franklin Avenue, one of the few places in NYC you can get sit down pizza AND periodic gun violence."

  • So, it looks increasingly that Ms. Gay was killed by a police bullet. And is it any surprise, when police feel the need to fire 73 times to hit a single person?

I never understood this. It's so consistent, I have to assume it is part of the training -- when you're firing at someone, don't aim and shoot and see what you've hit, just squeeze the trigger as fast as you can and unload the magazine in your target's general direction.

I would expect a police force that is supposed to deal with highly populated areas where stray shots could very easily lead to tragedy to take a somewhat more conservative approach when using of lethal force.

As they say, "gun control" means hitting your target.
