Have to move, what a pain.
So, my girlfriend and I have to move. My girlfriend has spent about 4 years in this apartment, we love it, and we love the Slope. We really don't want to move, but have to because our landlord decided he doesn't want any dogs in his building. We know all about the Pet Laws, but they are irrelevant in this case, as we have not had the dog three months, and the landlord has known about him from the start. He also decided that he doesn't want any plants in front of his building, as they pose a health hazard and he'll have to pay more insurance. (Bullshit?)
So we have to leave, we've got a few months.
Anybody know of a dog-friendly, nice, cheap one or two bedroom in the Slope?

That sucks. I will almost certainly move after 10 years next October. My landlord is sick and her son is here taking over and all he ever cares about is raising rent (I'm talking 20% or more each year) and doesn't do repairs..........sucks when you go from a decent situation to a crappy one.
Unfortunately, I do't know have any advice for you re: a good place to go -

flexichick - after 10 yrs you're in a market rate rental apartment?? No rent stabilization? Or am I misunderstanding. I was shocked at that 20% increase. Thar's what my friends in Sty Town are experiencing in market rate rentals there (Their rent started out at $2200/month)
As for advice - Take a very serious look at Red Hook. -

Agreed, but only if you have a car and want to use it a lot. -

Car, absolutely. But also the B61 or B77 bus to the subway. -

10 years - 5 years under market with no increases and now steady increases every year (last time I signed a 2 year lease). It's still a fair price IF he did repairs. Every single thing is a battle. I'm not kidding. Nothing is ever done on schedule, many things are never done at all and each "discussion" is a confrontation........I'll really be sorry to leave here, but it's just not worth the battle with him (esp. because I find him quite scary). -
I also meant to say that I won't live in Red Hook because it's just too damn subway-inconvenient. I have a car, but when I work I take the subway and it's too far to walk. I don't want to be freezing, walking in the dark, waiting for the bus, etc.

You guys should check out Prospect Heights.

Everything I hear about PH says that the rental market is just as high as PS. Is that not true? -

I don't think it's quite as high. And the neighborhood is much cooler. 8) 8) 8) -

I'd live there - the buildings are nice, there are good restaurants coming up all the time, near the park, subway convenient.
Next year when I'm ready I'll ask for more advice. -
we looked in red hook, found an awesome 1000sq ft loft (it actually was that big, i measured it myself) in a brand new building, top floor with views of downtown manhattan. it was perfect, we would have been the first tenants. for cheap too... $1400.
we were going to take it, until we realized that it is surrounded on 2 sides by literally 17 blocks of projects.
that does pose a problem. considering my girlfriend likes to take the dog for late-night walks. -
Did you get my PM Captain Salty?

I really don't see what the big deal with Red Hook is. No Subway means it is a total deal breaker for so many people. So, how is the neighborhood ever taking off, as opposed to just being talked about?

i like the idea of red hook but i have to tell you, i'm scared to live there. as a single woman it frightens me to be on dark, desolate streets.

red hook is over hyped. i'm sorry only thing it gots going for it is the warehouses. i bet the artist will love that. no trains. no real jobs in the area. ikea and fairway will be there. tons of projects and there is sea views and nice park. but trains is very important.

Do you know what's motivating him to change after 4 years? I have a lease for another year, but my landlord has been ill and one of her relatives is now involved in the day-to-day stuff and my situation is not what it used to be.
I ask because I am always concerned that this relative is going to try to pull some bullshit to get me out of here earlier and rent my place for more $ -
i'm pretty certain that he wants us out for more money. with the exception of the woman who has lived here for like 20 years, we pay less than everyone in the building.

union jac, thanks for the heads up, check your email and messages!
