Theft/attack on St. Mark's — Brooklynian

Theft/attack on St. Mark's

emily
edited November -1 in Prospect Heights

Someone got punched and her phone stolen on St. Mark's just now, between Underhill and Washington. Thieves also tried to take her bag but she had it on crossways. I spoke to her right afterwards and she seemed like a very alert person who knew how to walk down the street at night, if YKWIM. This happened when other passersby were within eyeshot. Two teenage African-American males between 15 and 18, with white T-shirts and baggy shorts. I realize that's not much of a description, but keep your eyes open, and it can't hurt to keep your phone in your bag.

ETA: Since this site now uses those annoying "time ago" datestamps, I'll clarify that this was on Sunday night, 10:35pm.

  • Not based on this incident alone, I fear PH may be again entering a period in which one is at increased risk of getting thier phone swiped ....not matter how alert and aware they may be.

Of course, the individual gets to decide whether this risk is high enough that they avoid showing it on the street all together.

  • Are you sure they were African-American? Could they have been Carribean-American or Black Irish-American?

  • sucks :(, one of the girls txt me on what happen.

    NOT PC

my advice to girls, is if you see urban looking guys walk across the street, if they cross the street too run. its better safe than sorry. not pc but so what if someones feelings get hurt. at least you're safe if they were muggers or not.

urban can be of any race :p, just the way they dress.

for my hood i avoid kids who are dress like jersey shore or asian kids with funny hair cuts and wearing mostly black(chinese gangster uniform their version of urban)

    This is absolutely terrible advice.

Hmmm. There's a fine line between making a judgement and a judgement call. If I'm walking alone and I see a group of young men hanging around on the sidewalk, and it looks as if by passing by or through them I could be surrounded by them, I cross the street. It's a decision I make for my personal safety, and I'm not going to apologize for it.

We all talk about being alert and aware of your surroundings, but nobody likes to admit that it's OK to make a decision based on those observations.

  • terrible for being not being pc. Don't give a damn, safety is more important. so what someones feelings get hurt.

We both know statistics and facts. violent crime is mostly committed by the economic disadvantage. Also victims of those violent crime tend to be poor too. But those criminal elements tend to dress differently to just stand out to advertise to others. If you lived in those areas you know how to avoid and what to look for.

BG go cry me a river. I rather see a sister safe than getting robbed, So what someones feelings get hurt, big deal. At least if it saves one person from getting hurt physically its well worth it.

  • There are Chinese and Jersey shore gangsters in Brooklyn?

Are they better or worse than our local Blood crews?

Can I choose "none of the above"?

  • they are very rare, mostly dead by the 90's. now its more organized. I remember when growing up there were alot more. I rarely see them around. and they don't anything besides probably working for organize folks now days.

benefit of organized crime is they keep the other crimes away. that's why the Japanese prefer organize crime. they openly tolerated it.

If I walked around my neighborhood acting scared of black people and young people, I would be far LESS safe, not more.

  • I really doubt these types of attacks are organized though. Its probably more on a whim, like: "lets get that skinny white bitch's phone."

My advice is just not to walk around those areas after dark and/or alone. It sucks, but your chances of getting mugged go up greatly east of Vanderbilt.

Sometimes people do act on others' fear. I was told to walk right into groups of people trying to intimidate others, rather than cross the street. Granted if it were at night and I was alone (and a chick) I would pick up the pace and not be in arms reach.

where did i say black people? the way youths dress. if they dress like a thug, they're most likely a thug. if you dress like a gangster you mostly a gangster or if you're just dressing to be cool to be one, gonna get beat by one if you live in a poor area. Law of the streets.

lol its not about acting screwed its called prepared. Like few times, Thugs would cross street with me. i would go grab sticks, i see, if they don't have weapons its on. cause we both know the deal. It's only the foolish who don't acknowledge the truth about poor and crime etc...

I had once scared the shit out of 2 young black males once. Kinda funny if you think about it. they walking alone in a white neighbourhood. I saw bus coming like a 2 block away. They walking ahead of me, they cross the street. bus stop was across the street and down the road. I walk across after them. they started to walk faster, and so was I. They started to run. They ran past the bus stop, I stop at the bus stop.

They were like half way down the block and walk back lol. Since they noticed I'm probably taking the bus lol, they were shit man you scared the shit out of us. than I realize what happen. They thought i was gonna mug them LOL. They took the same bus as I did. I was heading towards flatbush visiting my gf lol.

  • I swear bg you seem to live in a bubble world or something man.

Trust me man, I say the same thing about you.

I do not think your logic of assuming all people with baggy clothes and baseball hats with the tags on are "thugs" is a very smart thing to do.

It's a stupid assumption to make where I live in Bed-Stuy.

    Maybe your neighborhood is different.

  • I wish criminals would have a sign that says "criminal" hanging around their neck, and that no one without the sign ever broke the law.

    Life would be simpler

    Agree.

Also, I wish people who snatched ipods and cell phones would be nice enough to wait in a large group on the corner for you to pass by.

I really wish they'd stop, you know, sneaking up from behind, punching you in the head and running off before you have a chance to "cross the street".

  • While It is really annoying when people are victimized in such situations, it may be just as annoying when you are a crime victim and did not perceive any risk of the crime occurring.

    Will we solve this soon?

  • Will we solve this soon?

    Armchair is on the case.

I can put a big letter "C" on their foreheads that glow-in the dark. But, I'm busy in Texas right now.

  • Boygabriel said:

He is a good guy, but I hope he isn't too liberal with that "glow in the dark C".

After all, style of dress isn't a crime.

  • God-

While I appreciate you putting a big C on the forehead of known criminals, is there a reliable, fair way in which you could let all of us know who will become criminals?

For example, at some point, people will commit the first crime in their life. I assume that they will not have a C on their forehead at this point, and that victim will be caught completely off guard. Can you help us?

Also, how will you determine which crimes are serious enough to warrant a C? For example will jay walking count?

How long will folks have to wear the C's?

Will there be different size C's, based on the seriousness of the crime committed?

    BTW, good luck in Texas.

  • liberal is a conservative who has been mugged :p. I don't give a damn about pc. say what you guys may but its called learning experiences.

  • AW-

Please don't feel like you are being judged; All of us have our own methods of avoiding crime.

    None are foolproof.

...we wouldn't need Paraderest if they were.

Political Correctness has nothing to do with it.

Your approach to crime (avoid people who wear baggy clothes) is impractical, ineffective, and actually counterproductive for me.

lol don't put words into my mouth LOL. where did i say baggy clothes?

First you said I was talking about blacks etc.. I didn't say that at all. now you say baggy clothes. wow when did I say all those things.

    /foot in mouth. please insert.

everyone wears some sort of uniform. from criminal elements to what ever. If you know you know, if you don't you don't. Its like gaydar, if you got it you got it. if you don't you don't.

  • Let me address your concern:

  • Armchair was right!! I have adopted his policy of being scared of blacks, browns and anybody w baggie clothes. Who knew it was so simple. I run everywhere and I have loads of extra time. I am also dropping the pounds. Everyone should try this.
