The Battle for the Lincoln Park Place Playground? — Brooklynian

The Battle for the Lincoln Park Place Playground?

  • If this is a playground, as opposed to a park (like Prospect Park), adults are not allowed in the playground unless in the company of children, and there are rules about behavior. Also playgrounds are supposed to close at dusk. While I do not have a problem with people hanging out in a park, especially in a densely populated urban environment like Brooklyn where space is at a premium, I think that the police should harass these gangs until they move on. These are not social clubs, they are gangs, motivated by an intention to initimidate residents to create an environment where their criminal activites will go unreported.

The absolute best way to get rid of these gangs is for everyone to stop using illegal drugs. If you take away the market for their most profitable criminal enterprise, most of them will go away.

  • lol teens, they are adults at causing problems for kids. these play ground are for kids.

the cops should enforce some rules and they'll be out of there no time. no smoking(smoking pot is even better way to get them out).

there is a time curfew on those playgrounds. playing cards most likely gambling is involved. They just have to send some plain clothes guys and sit far away with binoculars and look for money exchanging hands and be done with.

  • I bet those kids live within a few blocks of that park.

    It is their park too.

  • Bohuma, its not a playground, it is a park that includes not just a children's playground, but also chess/checkerboard tables, and a full length basketball court that hosts tournaments on the weekends.

  • although it only captures one moment in time, the DN photo does not show them doing anything wrong:

No one is smoking a cigarette.

No bets appear on the table

Bet you didn't know the Eight of Spades can be used as a weapon. I've seen many a throat slashed and face cut because some imprudent youth decided to pounce on a law abiding citizen after losing several hands at a card game. The Daily News is right, these young men are obviously thugs up to no good. Lock 'em up. At the very least, deport them to Atlantic City where they can play cards in a casino of their choice.

  • Idlewild-

I know that you are being disingenuous, but I would like to genuinely submit that a few of those kids look like what used to be known as "geeks" or "nerds".

I can't say I know the terms used to describe them now.

  • You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy!

  • I am sick and tired of the New York media always making young latinos/blacks look like thugs and criminals. Here we have a group of young citizens spending the day in the park doing nothing but playing cards and chewing the fat. Lord forbid some racist columnist comes along and labels them gang members and christens their gathering under one the flag of the "TNG" (Top Notch Gentlemen). This senseless classification of minority youth must be stopped and articles like this must be ignored. One can clearly see that these young boys are up to nothing evil. Their only crime is being in a park thus making it impossible for the new residents of the area to enjoy the same area. Some call these new residents interlopers or hipsters but I just call them "new". God forbid that they can't go to the park and have first dibs on the benches. OH THE HUMANITY! It just sickens me that some hipster took the time to exaggerate the facts to the media in order to have these young men removed from the park. The true culprit here is over crowding and it is an evil shame to blame the original residents of the area for not making room for the hipster plague. Perhaps they prefer these young men go about doing something more unproductive with their lives instead of playing cards and discussing the urban plight of the minority man in Park Slope.

This sort of journalism really sickens me. Anyone who believes and supports this sort of journalistic dribble is a racist buffoon in my book.

  • I have to admit, I kinda like ^this^ version of soldiersantana.

    AND

I have to admit, I think slopeduder has more than a touch of the "sarcastic silly billys".

  • Couple of interesting comments from the Daily News:

As a young adult who spends time in that park I'm disgusted with how this reporter is trying to portray the people who hang out there. And furthermore I am so disappointed in the comments I am reading! Complaints about profanity are just rediculous especially since parents heard those same words on their work TOO the park. They`re saying that "TNG" hangs out in the park at about 6 which is actually the time that children should be home starting on homework in my opinion. At least they have the decency to wait until that time. I have yet to see anyone robbed stabbed shot or anything in 282 park. All the people you see in that photo attended public school 282 from kindergarten to 6th grade ... does that not give them the right to go there for cards and basketball? The reporter failed to inform you that this is one of the safest parks in brooklyn by far! As far as illegal drug use no, its not right but you can get that anywhere, and i have NEVER seen anyone smoke near a child in that pa

@IMPEACHEM THE REPORTER WAS IN THE PARK TWO DAYS AGO WHILE WE WERE ALL IN THERE. WHEN HE CAME IN HE SAID HE WAS THERE BECAUSE PEOPLE WERE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE MARIJUANA SMOKE BUT WHEN HE CAME IN ALL HE SEEN WAS THE GUYS PLAYING BASKETBALL AND CARDS AND IF HE COULD TAKE A PICTURE OF THAT. NO ONE WANTS TO BE PORTRAYED AS A "THUG" AND IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY IN THE PICTURE YOU WILL SEE A GIRL WHO IS NO MORE THAN A 11 YEARS OLD. DID SHE WANT TO BE PORTRAYED AS A "THUG" TOO. IF HE TOLD THEM WHAT HE WAS IN THERE FOR THERE WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN A PICTURE OF THEM. THEY ARE NOT THE ONLY GUYS THAT HANG IN THAT PARK

  • Until I hear more from the parents, I'm siding with the TNG chess and card "geeks". They are innocent until proven guilty.

...especially if there are other adolescents who hang in that park.

  • there was a lengthy exchange about this on park slope parents. suffice to say that it was pretty convincing that there is, at least, one group of young men who regularly drink, smoke and threaten parents and kids in that playground. that doesn't mean it's the same people this article mentions or pictures.

  • lambchop-

Please post on Park Slope Parents that one of them should either secretly snap a picture of that "other group" drinking and smoking, or record them making such comments.

Any decent smartphone is up to the task.

...picking on chess "geeks" is wrong.

  • haha, no thanks. among other reasons, my guess is they don't necessarily feel the need to convince brooklynians, as long as the police are handling it.

  • OMG! Yeah, sure blame the supposed TNG gang members for the weed smoking. Sure they make a much easier scape goat than white urban pioneers. In reality the only people you see smoking marijuana in the inner secluded recesses of the parks are the very same people complaining about the supposed gang members. Let us be honest, the only people smoking pot are the hipsters pushing their strollers to and fro. It is amazing that now the hipster population is accusing the minority man for the very behavioral problem in Park Slope. How Ironic especially when the main customer of these gang drug dealers are the very hipsters that complain so loudly.

This is low level reporting that basically shocks and nauseates me at the same time. Way to go , Daily News. I hope you are happy with the crap you are printing on your rag. Perhaps your lazy reporter should have done some research before pointing the accusatory finger at the wrong group of people. I am sure some smug hipsters are giggling within their yuppy-esque hobble and celebrating yet another victory against the victimization of the minority man. Put another point on the board for team "hipster" and their weapon of choice, gentrification.

The way things are going I am sure I will be accused of something bogus in order to get me to vacate my townhouse.

  • SoldierSantana, is there anything that doesn't "shock and nauseate" you?

  • Booklaw, I apologize for my behavior but I can only compare myself to a simmering pot of boiling water. Eventually the water evaporates and the pot explodes in flame. This is how I feel after living most, if not, my entire life in Park Slope. I have seen the changes and let me say that although they appear beautiful on the surface the racial nastiness that lies below the surface is down right nauseating.

    Booklaw-

He does seem to be an excitable character. He seems to use a lot of inflammatory language, and seems to vacillate between absolutes.

It is hard to take such characters seriously.

Yes, I find it hard to believe that anyone (parents on the PS parents listserv, parents not on the listserv, kids, adolescents, internet posters, etc) believes this article in the Daily News represents anything to get terribly excited about.

After all, the Daily News (and all other media sources) have to fill their paper everyday with something, and this article was certainly easy and cheap to write.

I'm with you. If there is truly a group of menacing and lawbreaking group of kids, I am pretty confident that the police will become aware of it, and take measured steps to address the issue.

Of course, some people will wish the police came in with tanks, and others will want the police do nothing at all ...but that neither is the way the world usually works.

  • Such spirited debate. Really well argued.

I just came all in my pants.

  • to be clear, the park slope parents issue was raised several weeks ago, with police response following. the daily news is late to the party, and causing confusion with a poorly reported story.

  • Alas, children will be children on this forum. It just tickles me how a ninny like Why_not has opinions on people and matters he can not possibly comprehend. Ah yes, so is the inner workings of an opinionated child. If I seem excitable it is because I am older than most of the ranters on this forum. My years on this planet have earned me the right to be excitable and deal in absolutes. Yes, I am an old leather shoe but an experienced one at that. I still have a pep in my step, son and don't you forget it.

Now let us try to stay on topic instead of finding reasons to dissect each other. If you insist on trying to bait me then I shall ask the moderator to please close this thread.

  • ATTENTION MODERATOR:

Please remove the last post by "Dance Rehearsal." I find that trashy talk distasteful and offensive and it has no place on this board or on any other. I believe we can all debate without resorting to that type of language which brings nothing to the topic of discussion. Thank you.

  • If I am referred to as being excitable and absolute due to my postings I hate to see what the venerable poster "Stretchy" will be classified as.

All joking aside, the comment was a bit sleazy and should be removed.

    DR-

I envy your to ability to cum so easily and quickly. I require different websites to achieve that, and my credit card is almost max'd out.

    Lambchop-

I was unaware that the DN was late to the story. Although I like the Internet and the ability to enjoy naked women instantaneously, I wish it had not destroyed Journalism to this degree.

    Stretchy/Soldier-

I imagine that it is difficult to hold such strong feelings about the world and have no one sympathize.

  • Oh! I just remembered about a month ago, the Garfield tot lot in Prospect Park was vandalized by someone tagging TNG all over the place with a pink marker. On the slide, the metal poles, etc. I was pretty miffed at the time. Guess I know who it was now! TNG can suck a ****!

  • Soulja-

Your first (and only prior) post was on the thread about how windchimes were a menace and featured soldier and his clones.

You are really Marty Markowitz aren't you? He holds very low opinions of the populace, and thier ability to see a clown.
