Best bike shop for reasonably priced bike?
It's great that we now have so many bike shops in the area, but seems like they all only carry higher end bikes.
Where in the area can I go to get my teenager a decent bike that's not going to cost $400 or more? There has to be something between a Target bike (which seem like crap but may be adequate?) and the $400 or $500 and up bikes that all of the old and new bike shops seem to carry. (Would prefer to avoid Craigs list as I don't want to buy our old stolen bike back....)

Honestly I don't know for sure about prices at these places, but Mr. C's Cycles is where my bf got his bike and it overall seemed a lot better than my experiences in PS. It's not PS but not too far--he took the train there and biked home very easily.
Also, I've gone to the service section of Roy's (Coney Island Ave, I think) and it was astoundingly better (in service and price) than what I've experienced in Park Slope and Prospect Heights (that place on Vandy was the worst so far for flats). I didn't go in the shop, but it looked well-stocked. A person I know who's really into bikes speaks highly of Roy's.

I bought my bike at Roy's also. They are very good about making sure a bike fits you properly, and do not try to push higher-priced bikes on you.
Yes, it's on Coney Island Avenue near Avenue X or Y.

I bought mine at Bergen bikes (or is it Brooklyn bikes?) (between Flatbush and 5th) and it was in that price category plus free installation of all the extra stuff I added on. Great customer service, too. The bike was actually cheaper there than the same bike online.

Just wanted to add:
You should definitely be able to get a solid bike for less than $400 at a lot of bike shops.

A Target bike isn't necessarily crap, btw. It might not last forever, but bikes really seem to take a beating (and stealing) around here so I don't know if it matters. You might do better at a bigger Target or Walmart that you have to drive to, though. I feel like there's hardly anything at the Atlantic Target.

all the bikes have price points at 250, then at 125 to 150 more for each step up in components. If the bike is for a teen 200 won't last long. Better to go used. Bike and Roll and a couple of other of the big rental places have bikes that cost about 350-400 new for 150-175. They have a place down by 57th and 9th or 10th, and they take cards, as if school shopping didn't hit ya hard enough. There are a couple of things on CL that are similar.good luck don't forget the lock!!

I'll 2nd Mr. C's. Carlos, the owner is pretty cool and he tries to get you a good bike in your price range. I believe Mike, from Bicycle Station on Park Avenue by Clermont has pretty good deals as well.

You can also ask shops if they have any models from last year on discount. I have bought more than one bike this way and usually save 20% or so.

i stumbled on the brooklyn bike jumble (or something like that) next to MS51 today and got a what I think was a real good deal on a used bike. Not sure how often they do this thing but its definitely worth checking out. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

I purchased a COSTCO special last year and it has been one of the best bikes I ever purchased. The bicycle cost me $259 but it is worth every penny and then some. Check out their site and if interested there is a Costco warehouse near the Gowanus.

By the way, you can get an electric bike starting at $800. These bikes are the future and one can get up to 20 miles on a single charge.
