Can someone recommend an internet provider? — Brooklynian

Can someone recommend an internet provider?

Hi,

We just moved here and I was looking for internet providers in New York. I found two - verizon and Time Warner Cable. The first one was too expensive, so we went for TWC. Big mistake. They have the most horrible customer service I ever encountered and we are still without internet. Can someone recommend a internet provider beside those two? I really start feeling at home in Starbucks but it would be even more fun to have internet at home. Thanks!

  • Try looking at these old threads. They'll give you some suggestions of where to start.

What internet provider do you use (Williamsburg)

Best internet provider in Park Slope

Cable and internet service providers (Slope)

Or you can do a search for "internet provider" (the search box is at the top of the page) and you'll find tons of other threads on the subject.

  • Verizon costs a little more (because of installation fees), but it was worth it to me. When the hurricane hit us last month everyone on Time Warner around me lost service for a week or more. Me? Nope, I had full service even during the storm and after.

  • Thanks. Didn't thin about that #-o.

But what I read is not very encouraging. Seems we will have to deal with one of the two.

  • wirless boardband sprint. Thats what i'm using, but its a bit pricey but you can take it anywhere with you!!

  • Cablevision is #1

  • They all suck in some way, and that's probably mostly due to the fact that they pretty much operate as monopolies around here. TWC and Cablevision are the main providers of Brooklyn (offering phone, internet, and cable tv) and only one of the two services any address. You can't switch between them, you're address determines who you can have.

FYI, if a TWC tech doesn't come for an appointment during the scheduled time frame, you will get a month of free service for whatever the appointment was for, but you have to tell them you want it. Tell them you know they have to do it, which they do.

  • oh also if you want cheaper mobile boardband 3g is much cheaper than 4g, which i'm using.

no need to tether, you get a device that can be connected to many other devices via wifi. no phone service needed etc...(for both 3g and 4g)
