attending church

I know that there are a million posts about churches, but I couldn't figure out how to narrow my search to find what I need..

I am looking for a church home that is closer to my apartment. I had been attending the United Methodist church in Park Slope at 8th Ave and 6th Street and loved it - very liberal, open-minded, academically based, and welcoming. The only problem is that it took me 45 minutes to get there (4 train to the R train on a Sunday...) and just over that to walk each morning. I know that in Brooklyn it isn't that terrible of a commute, but after enjoying my Saturday evening, leaving at 10am (meaning up at 8:30am to shower and eat first) was rough.

I am hoping to find something closer, within Prospect Heights. I was raised Moravian, but am generally a Protestant young female with a more liberal leaning way of thinking.

Does anyone have suggestions??
Thanks in advance!!

  • Off the top of my head I can think of three churches in Prospect Heights. The Catholic Church on Pacific, there's a church (Baptist?) on Sterling at Underhill, and then there is a church on St. Marks (?) between Vanderbilt and Underhill.

I go to a church in Brooklyn Heights, so I guess I can somewhat say that I feel your pain with regards to leaving on a Sunday morning. It takes me only about 20 mins., though, on the 2/3.
  • i enjoyed easter services at st johns church (st johns btwn 6th and 7th -- PS, granted, but close). seems like a progressive place with a racially mixed congregation who seem to love the rector.

    ETA: st johns is episcopal.

WOW, I was brought up in the Moravian Church too (Pennsylvania)! Converted....to the Episcopal Church 20 years ago. My church was in the Village but it got harder and harder to schlepp (and do service) every Sunday. As I got older and the location of my job changed, I just couldn't participate like I did before. I have, from time to time, gone "church shopping" and was going to post here tonight. I have become a bit less...liberal and am looking for a serious, long-term Bible Study.
Good luck and let me know where you end up.
  • Thanks so much for all of the help...I hate "church shopping", but I am going to check out some of these mentioned places. I may, however, end up sucking it up and treking further out, but we shall see. Thanks!!

Stoop Lady! I am from PA too! (I can now probably narrow down your city to 2..haha)
  • The church at the corner of Sterling and Underhill is Presbyterian. Not nearly as liberal as PSUMC, but they would be welcoming, I'm sure.

    Emmaus.... :alien:
  • Bethlehem for me...I PMed you

    thanks!
  • Or, xlizellx, you could consider getting a bike. I don't know if that's an option for you, but a bike ride to that church from Prospect Heights would be quite quick.
  • Well, it's a year later and I finally went to the above mentioned Presbyterian church on Underhill and Sterling -- it was incredibly friendly and everyone was so welcoming, but I was 50 years younger than almost everyone there. The only two people close to my age....were also there for the first time. Not sure if it was for me, but good to know that it was a nice place with a more traditional service that was welcoming to new-comers.

    My church-hunting plan of attack:

    - St. John's church between 6th and 7th (as recommended by Sweet Tea above)

    - John Hus Moravian church (Ocean avenue at Lincoln Rd)

....and then probably head further into Park Slope?

In the past year the number of bars, restaurants, yoga places, etc. for the new people in the area have increased greatly - yet the churches seem to have kept the same members. Not sure what this means....but I guess I am surprised there isn't a group of younger new community members looking for a church too...

And yes, I know you were all concerned about my progress on this issue from last year. Although I see that someone asked about this 3 years ago too...I wonder where the OP ended up...

  • Please post here when you find something. I'll do the same. I've been checking out churches and I found one in Park Slope, Journey Metro that I loved but I think they now meet in Manhattan. And if you're interested in church-hunting in Crown Heights with a partner, let me know.

  • I go a Presbyterian church in slope on 7th ave. It's a pretty nice walk from PH, say 20 minutes or so.

  • park slope presbyterian on 7th ave between 4th and 5th streets is great. it's community-focused, people are friendly, sermons have been intelligent and thoughtful, and musicians are truly excellent, just for some points. it's held at john jay high school 10:30am sundays.

  • Forefront is working on building a church in Brooklyn in 2012. The website is forefrontchurch.com.

  • I am not a church attendee, however I've been to gatherings with/at the methodist (i think) church on 6th ave and 8th street and have always had a great time. I was surprised the first time I went to see three bartenders from my local spots! That is shared only to illustrate that its a liberal, semi "young" church. Were I in the market, I would definitely attend (although it is far from you.)

That's where I used to go -- it's a great place, but yeah...kinda far. Thanks!

  • Hello,

My husband and I live in Crown Heights and attend this church http://www.sgcitychurch.com and since January 2007 we've been meeting in P.S. 282 in Park Slope (Lincoln & 6th Ave). But as of last week, we have recently entered into a partnership with Dureya Presbyterian on Underhill and Sterling to use their building for services on Sunday afternoons starting on January 2012.

I'm super excited about this b/c our church is predominately young families (25-40), single college students and young adults (Native New Yorkers and transplants). And I think this is a great opportunity to serve the Prospect Heights community as well as an older congregation like Dureya that desperately wants to reach out to a younger generation but needs help.

If you'd be interested in visiting our church, feel free to visit the website to read more about it and even listen to a sermon or to to get a feel for the teaching. I hope this post is helpful :D

    That was helpful, thanks!

I checked out the website and I am definitely interested in checking it out - I'll probably take advantage of the nice weather and come out before the move closer to me ... although I'm out of town for the next couple weekends in a row. But once I'm back in town I'll be there! Thank you!!

  • You're very welcome!

  • Sleep late on Sunday. I do.

  • Sleep late on Sunday. I do.

  • I'd go the rebellious route and attend the Union Temple. Yes, it's a Jewish congregation. But, they're also very liberal and have a decent mix of age groups. Remember, you don't have to be Jewish to enjoy Levi's rye bread.

  • Wow...if you are not Jewish you can attend a synagogue regularly? Please tell me more. I guess the congregation would have to be reform, correct?

    #YODAFAIL?

  • A bunch of religions have services on Saturday, so God could be legit.

    But I suspect s/he is a poser.
