Moving to St. John's Place btw. Nostrand and New York Ave

St. John's pl. between Nostrand and Rogers is a bit raucous, but I believe that one is nice enough. My limited explorations of that specific block is that New York ave. is quite lovely, Nostrand is usually quite loud and busy.
You would be very close to the grocery store, while not anything fancy, does tend to have most things you need and pretty fresh vegetables. I do sometimes smell something that's a little funny in there, but I'm gestating so my keens sense of smell could qualify me for drug sniffing purposes.

There are often cops on Nostrand at night, more during the warmer months I believe. Nostrand hasn't had the safety advantage(?)* of being an Impact Zone like the nearby Franklin ave, so the police presence is not as extreme and reliable as far as I know.
I live in the area and so far have felt generally safe as you would with taking the usual precautions. (Here meaning, be aware of surroundings, not listen to headphones on the street, not use a fancy phone on the street etc).
The 3 train is moderately reliable, I often walk from Franklin ave. on Eastern Parkway when the wait for the 3 is too long. I really like living so close to E.P.
With the restaurant options broadening on Franklin ave. there are more options for the romantic night out within walking distance, but you will have to go to Franklin. I haven't seen any such action on Nostrand yet.
When I first saw the apartment I am now living in I was more hesitant. I just kept coming back and it helped to make me more comfortable with the surroundings. You should come back within the next day or two (because to grab a place in NYC, you really don't have longer than that to put an application in).
See what the actual block looks like at a variety of times of day, how many people are out on the street, how many are working people coming home, etc. to see what the feel of the specific block is. It will be far more reliable than anything someone on here will say.
Good luck. Overall I have been very happy in the near area.

*The Impact Zone is controversial in part because you toss your civil liberties out the window, the cops can and do arrest anyone they feel like, even local respected business owners. My feeling, though, is the overall level of safety has also improved on that avenue.

Nostrand Ave IS part of the impact zone.
Nostrand to Franklin
Atlantic to Eastern -
ParadeRest, Oops, sorry. Thanks for the clarification. I guess I thought it was mainly Franklin since I never see any cops on Bedford or Rogers and I feel like I see more on Franklin than Nostrand. But I don't take big strolls at night on Nostrand, I just get to where I'm going usually, and walk the hound more on Eastern Parkway.

I think both Nostrand and Franklin have become areas in which trouble usually only finds those looking for it.
Blood, sweat and tears have gotten us this far.

We live near Kingston on dean. The funny thing is Kingston is really
strange but we have noticed a change along the side streets. I see people
walking dogs at 1:00 am in the morning. I'm a big guy and still wouldn't
risk it before. I say this because, I have made the mistake of letting other
people's fears limit my exposure. I remember looking along the A train at the
Utica stop. I asked the landlord, "is it safe back there". Now, there are coffee
shops and boutique pizza and wine bars.Suggestion, get a nice place to stay in the area and lock in the deal before it is too
late. If rent is this high in the recession, then wait until we make it out of these tough
patches. -
I would look west personally.

Thanks everyone for all this useful advice! Really appreciated!

I hear Newark, Memphis and Detroit are west of here and much worse.
Howdy, Stranger!
