Christie's patty closing after 45 years - (Thanks to Nets?)
Comments
-
Fine, but don't blame it entirely on the Nets and Barclays Center.
-
I have a solution -
everybody go and buy a couple dozen patties for the holidays.
Help him raise the money he owes the landlord.
Keep him in business by frequenting his establishment.
Once the stadium opens he can start charging more for patties and can make a decent profit.
-
i doubt that an arena seven blocks away that's still months away from opening has much to do with it. it's not like businesses are clamoring for the real estate -- there are lots of vacant storefronts on vanderbilt much closer. sounds like unpaid rent is the bigger issue. too bad they couldn't have stayed in the smaller space across the street, which was sufficient for a takeout joint and probably a good deal cheaper. my guess is the space will stay vacant for a while, unless there's another nail salon or cellphone franchise out there.
-
IT HAS EVERYTHING to do with the arena, according to the report, landlord Lina Feng wants the restaurant out in order to make way for a higher-paying tenant now that the Barclay's Center arena is nearing completion, although according to court documents filed by Feng Christie's is late; Feng is also the landlord of the building that will house controversial new bar and restaurant, Prime 6. The bar and restaurant made headlines last spring after residents worried about noise from the backyard area and raucous sports fans packing the bar after games at the Barclay's Center, so it is ALL about Barclay's arena....
-
While the arena is a factor, it is not the ONLY factor. The area started gentrifying long before Ratner announced plans to build the arena. Plus, the article clearly states that business at Christie's has been slow recently and that the owner is two months behind on his rent and other bills. He enjoyed a good run and was open longer than most posters on this board have been alive. Not many restaurants in NYC can make that claim.
-
Everyone thinks that they can make a buck off the arena... so it is the ONLY factor.... is there was no arena the landlord wouldn't be in such a hurry to give them the boot... so you can live in la-la land & ignore was is a blatant fact, it is about the arena!! There is no reason to violate the SLA's 500ft rule in Prospect Heights without the arena 13+ full liquor licenses within 500ft of 6th Ave & Flatbush, why? It is damn sure not for the community.... what these so called 'savvy business/property owners' forget is that the arena will have a liquor licenses too.... so there will be many that will open & more will close....
-
I just hope that we don't have a boom, then bust phenomena.
Wherein the businesses and landlords over estimate the arenas impact, and create unrolled, expensive storefronts.
-
Everyone wants an easy bogeyman, but the arena is just one small part of an increasingly expensive retail climate in the neighborhood.

-
It's ironic that everyone is so chicken~sh*t to admit that the arena will forever change the landscape of Prospect Heights for the worse unless you're the one that fantasizes about rubbing elbows with someone out of your peer group by a factor of one million.... there were many other developers & locations that the arena could have been built... of course his business slowed so has everyone else.... Businesses owners in Fort Greene and north Park Slope also report that landlords have doubled rent, citing proximity to the arena in new real-estate ads.... go to the CB8 ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE and ALL they deal with is new liquor licenses, oh are we the new east village? if there was no arena then the landlords would be more willing to work with someone that has been in the community for 45 years... get it... 45 years.... Christie’s opened in 1966 serving the community.... now we have more wannabe 500ft SLA new sport bar liquor licenses @ Park Pl & Flatbush... hoz that serving the community? NOT!!
-
i don't disagree that AY is fucking over the neighborhood. i just prefer to focus on facts, which they're plenty of, rather than assume everything bad that happens is AY's fault. if you tailor every problem to fit your agenda, then it's just your propaganda vs. theirs.
-
Oh, having so many new liquor licenses applications every month the CB8 ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE can't deal with any other agenda item is just 'propaganda'? 19,000 'fans' traipsing thru the NAB 220 days a year is just 'propaganda'? Having 24/7 construction for the next 25 years is just 'propaganda'? you are smokin'....
-
I feel that the landlord is a total buttplug for making Mr.Hates keep his patty prices at 2 dollars instead of raising them with any common sense.
I also feel that the landlord is a complete slob, I mean look at that awning!!
I think the landlord should have held out a little longer waiting for the Slopers to make there way over for a ground meat pocket after a trip to the co-op.I also feel that the 1000's of new residents just didn't embrace local culture, instead they are flocking to Bark and Brooklyn Larder.
Why go to Franny's when a 2 dollar meal is available? People just don't get it.
The landlord is right to make way for another place like Prime6 because that place was not only welcomed by the surrounding community but it has been completely accepted. Hat's off to you Mr.Hayes. Your protest mechanism is one I hope more people use, don't pay your rent and the landlord will certainly perk up and start paying attention.May want to read story about Grimaldi's pizza. The landlord in that case called an 80 year old man to ask if he would like his old space w a new lease. The story originally unfolded as if the landlord was a money grubbin' asshole, turns out he just wanted to paid on time.

People love to cast landlords in the role of enemy.
....Ratner is just a very successful landlord.

the larger point is that you do the neighborhood, and those of us opposed to ay, no favors by building your argument on questionable claims, especially when there are so many real ones available.

@ SJ;
so what's your point? it's not questionable, it what was written in the article & that's what this thread is about....

“She’s trying to kick me out,” he said. “I don’t think it’s worth the stress; it’s killing me. I’ve had so many sleepless nights.”The dispute is the latest evidence that small businesses may have trouble staying open near the arena, where the Nets will play basketball next season (if there is a season).
Businesses owners in Fort Greene and north Park Slope also report that landlords have doubled rent, citing proximity to the arena in new real-estate ads.

In your strenuous reach to attribute this to AY, you're making yourself look like an irrational idiot. People don't like to support irrational idiots or the causes that they attach themselves to. In other words, you're not doing yourself any favors.
-
@ WhyFi.... I didn't write the article... I agree with it... I don't give a flying F-k if you agree & you don't speak for everyone else.... & I'm NOT asking for your sorry a$$ support... people with YOUR IRRATIONAL IDIOTIC ideas why the tax payers keeps getting screwed with these unprofitable arena projects... at least the taxpayers in Long Island weren't stupid enough to vote for more debt to build another arena for the Islanders....
-
And here I thought we could all just get together for a beef patty.
-
i desist.
-
I'm aware that you didn't write the article - it's not particularly well-written, but it's still better than I think you can manage. Maybe if you would calm down for a moment, you could compose a coherent thought.
Again - no information has been provided that shows that back rent ISN'T the primary motivating factor of this dispute, given the fact that the owner admits he's well behind.
I think that I'll follow the lead of Smokin' Joe - you're clearly not a person to be rationalized with, so I'll just let you hang yourself with your nonsensical ranting.
-
I wonder what will go in that space next....
-
I agree with you, WhyFi, that ayinfonyc is irrational. It's this overzealous approach that caused the DDDB crowd to fail so miserably in the first place.
WhyNot, I was wondering the same thing. I guess time will tell.

DDDB was going to fail, regardless of whom kept their head and who didn't. AY had the full backing of City, State & Fed. Even the US Supreme Court found in favor of Eminent Domain, no matter what the reason. Now, as far as Christie's goes, the neighborhood is changing. The rents have been sky-rocketing for a while. I'm surprised they lasted this long. Hopefully, the owner will find another place to open shop. Hopefully, he'll have enough cash to buy the property he's setting up shop in so he won't have to worry about paying rent and can actually put collect additional pocket change. I guess this leaves Benoit Barber Shop on Park Place (by Carlton) as the last of the OGs.

http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/szechuan-gourmet01/Who are we kidding, bring on the Olive Garden!

Mama-
The location is kinda small for anything like the Olive Garden. Maybe an Olive Garden Express? There is a double brownstone located on Prospect Pl, near Vanderbilt that I have been eying for a while. It presently has a Haitian Baptist Church in it, but is unused most days of the week. If I had the cash, I'd make the congregation an offer and they could purchase a much lager church closer to where their members now live. I'd then divide it, renovate them and sell them. The buildings are presently painted yellow, but a little sandblasting would take care of that....
Anyone remember when the Haitian Times newspaper used to have its office on Vanderbilt, near where Milk Bar is now? ...they have now moved to Flatbush Ave.

@ WhyFI : you started this sh*t by posting... "you're making yourself look like an irrational idiot. People don't like to support irrational idiots or the causes that they attach themselves to. In other words, you're not doing yourself any favors"... I was just posting my opinion.... now you act like a above it all pompous a$$h-le... overzealous? I am going to advocate for what I want & it's not going to be taxpayer subsidized arena & 33 story buildings in a residential NAB & then tell me to live with the negative impacts... PM me & let's meet @ 4:30am or read about the how wonderfully the arena workers treat the NAB @ www.atlanticyardswatch.net

All I know is that I have been gorging myself on Veggie and Beef patties since i read this.
