  • I wonder if they will still be open when we have Festivus.

It would be a suitable food: A shrinking message board, one of the last area dive bars, and disappearing cheap eats.

Ah, change, here you come again.

@ WhyFI : you started this sh*t by posting... "you're making yourself look like an irrational idiot. People don't like to support irrational idiots or the causes that they attach themselves to. In other words, you're not doing yourself any favors"... I was just posting my opinion.... now you act like a above it all pompous a$$h-le... overzealous? I am going to advocate for what I want & it's not going to be taxpayer subsidized arena & 33 story buildings in a residential NAB & then tell me to live with the negative impacts... PM me & let's meet @ 4:30am or read about the how wonderfully the arena workers treat the NAB @ www.atlanticyardswatch.net

That site seems pretty one-sided -- almost as if someone who had already made a foregone conclusion was looking only for evidence that supported it. Hmm.

  • Even is "someone" did make that foregone conclusion; if the Barclay's arena construction workers/contractors complied with the law & the ESDC, our elected officials did their jobs properly & held Forrest City Ratner accountable for violations then the site would have no content... if you went to the meetings & listened to the vast amount of elaborate promises made by the ESDC & FCR then live in the reality of today’s construction impacts, it's easier to post comments then to actually know what the local community deals with 24/7/365... what's posted on the site is a small amount of what the community deals with... ask the CLEXY block association over 1 mile east from the arena what the traffic impact is from arena trucks rambling thru their NAB to get to the BQE (the site has that info)... I find most comments still associate those speaking out today with the past detractors... how many of you actually live in the arena NAB? Many of arena supporters in my NAB are now pleading for someone to do something... the impacts are more than just the construction…. Like the DWI Arrests Nearly Tripled in East Village Last Year from the amount of ‘new’ full liquor licenses issued, DNAinfo Report Finds... So the type of business that migrates into our NAB may or not have a negative impact… there are those that support the arena and some at all cost to anyone & those that don't....

  • ayinfonyc, are you saying that there were 3x as many DWI arrests because of the increase in liquor licenses issued in the East Village?

I have attended a couple of meetings for construction overview and community board meetings and the general feel is that noise and many of the things that are associated w liquor serving establishments is not wanted in the area.

  • I attend the CB8’s Housing & Economic Development committees; ALL the EDC deals with is new liquor licenses issues. There is no reason to violate the SLA's 500ft rule in Prospect Heights without the arena; like 9~13+ full liquor licenses within 500ft of 6th Ave & Flatbush. An example of what’s coming; the owners of the east village Sunburnt Calf opened the brand new sister BK Calf on Vanderbilt, there has been community complaints that this bar serves unlimited liquor events, if they do that violates the liquor laws… so how’s 19,000 arena fans having access to unlimited booze in the NAB? So I do care what businesses are in my NAB & voice my opinion @ the CB8 meetings…. So, when an article on Christie’s predicament is posted & I post my opinion & then other posters want to depict opposing opinions as ‘some of those nefarious arena haters!’ it does an injustice and is an insult to all of the residents that have to endure an arena’s impacts….

Read for yourself, that is what was reported by DNA Info:

Sep 12, 2011 – The amount of DWI arrests in the East Village jumped more than 140 percent last year, and 600 percent since 2001 (read below some highlights

You can read entire article here: http://tinyurl.com/75rytlm

The shocking statistics showed the neighborhood's 9th Precinct arrested a huge 141.4 percent more suspected drunk drivers in 2010 compared to the year before. That's 140 incidents compared to 58. The increase was even more eye-popping when compared to previous years. Since 2008, arrest numbers went up 204.3 percent. Since 2001, the rise has been an amazing 600 percent. That surge comes as the rest of the city saw DWI arrests decline by 7.4 percent since 2009, and 11.5 percent since 2008. Some familiar with the East Village's situation cited ramped-up police efforts and the ever-increasing amount of nightlife establishments as reasons for the massive spike. Drunk driving arrests have surged in the East Village in recent years. "To me it shows enforcement," said Community Board 3 district manager Susan Stetzer, who works closely with the police precinct. "These are very scary statistics because this is no longer quality of life — this is life and death."

And none of this has anything to do with a guy being a few months behind on his rent. Start another thread or, better yet, a blog that no one will give any thought to. Oh, you already did.

  • It does have everything to do with it; he was quoted & this thread is: Christie's patty closing after 45 years - (Thanks to Nets?) if he doesn't pay his rent he needs to get evicted... so you think this is only about late rent some others don't....

I didn't start the blog just contribute...

"The owner of a cheap neighborhood favorite will close his restaurant after 45 years in Park Slope and Prospect Heights, citing a landlord-tenant dispute fueled by a nearby sports arena.

Paul Haye, who runs Christie’s Jamaican Patties on Flatbush Avenue and Sterling Place, says he’ll close by January, claiming his landlord — who last spring welcomed embattled sports bar Prime 6 to the neighborhood — gave him the boot in order to collect higher rent from a new tenant, now that Barclays Center is closer to completion.

  • I see no problem with a landlord seeking as much rent as possible for his/her property.

I do not care why a landlord believes s/he can get more $ than in the past.

I hope Christie's finds a neighborhood in which it can sell its trademark inexpensive food and still pay rent; It does not surprise me that such a business model will no longer work in PH.

  • It does not surprise me that such a business model will no longer work in PH.

How about Washington Ave. -- CH side of Washington that is....

    Border hopping..

    Was on PH/PS Border

    lets go to PH/CH border

  • I'm pretty bummed to read this news. Their coco bread is my 3 year old's favorite. I hate it when a good place goes down.

  • I hope he moves to Nostrand Ave...his patties are delicious and cheap.

  • Nostrand already has the only good steak and cheese place around, (Syd's Sandwich) and the best wings (Super Wings), so the addition of Christie's could form a trifecta.

there already is one there, 3Cs, and it's better than christie's.

  • You shall be missed Christie's. I've been going to get your awesome patties since way back when, before you even moved to this current location.

Today's lunch (saved the second for later =P~ )

Pish - as if that was a long time ago, you whipper-snapper... and stay off of my crack vials!

  • I spoke with the owner today. He said the landlord thinks she can get more money because of Atlantic Yards.

He does admit to owing money, but this is partially because the landlord surprised him with five years of a real estate tax bill. He did admit that he could have been charging more, so he's going to try to work things out. It's not over till it's over.

I was ready to start a campaign to save Christie's, but he said to wait a bit until he speaks to the landlord again.

So, they still might be open in Mid Dec?

  • whynot_31 said:So, they still might be open in Mid Dec?

If he's still negotiating with the landlord, I think it's likely they will still be open. The Brooklyn Paper says that they'll "close by January."

  • Landlord is a slumlord. Booted Mooneys too. Owns residential buildings which are horribly kept yet rents keep rising pricing out occupants. She's a blight on this neighborhood.

  • Does she own the liquor store on that block? Not just the building, but that business?

  • So are the people at Sharlene's family members? Are all the beer guzzling patrons all without conscious? How about any places that has opened and reopened within the last 20 years? that's how long the street has been improving.

The building owners should be able to raise and lower the rents on every commercial space as Laissez-faire permits. The is no morale anything to a chicken wing place or a meat patty shop. Just some sentimental puffs of fluff. Dog food shops, nail salons and donuts are not icons of high culture. If a baby was living under the bar (Mooneys) or a kid was warmed by the deep fryer at the patty place, it's a problem but not the landlords.

  • Greed is always a problem.

  • Lets first define greed, then declare it a problem.

Also, let's make sure we are not simply envious.

    ...then I'll be ready.

Yes, Mei Chi Liquor is owned by Feng, she is one tough businessperson, also delusional. On more than one occasion she put the building Sharlene's now occupies on the market only to pull it when offers at her asking price came in too quickly.

  • Till Feb. Fighting that crazy beeotch.

  • It was open when I walked by. I wonder how many patties he has to sell to make the new rent.

I think I would move someplace with a cheaper rent just so I could serve fewer people.
