Dog Courtesy Hours
I am writing regarding a very contentious issue in most city parks. New York City health code stipulates that all dogs must be leashed when in a public place. In addition to local and state laws the ASPCA, Humane Society, American Kennel Club and the Center for Disease Control recommend leashing ones dog in public for, among many reasons, the protection of the animal.
Juniper Park Civic Association has set-up an online petition to compel the City of New York to enforce the current leash law in city parks. Dog owners unleashing their dogs in public places have caused numerous problems to people, dogs, wildlife and property. The detrimental effects of unleashed dogs in public places has only been aggravated by city officials encouraging scofflaws.
I urge anyone who has ever had a family member, pet or, they themselves, harassed, endangered or injured by unleashed dogs to sign the online petition:

You might also want to check out another blog set-up to document the problem, as well as, provide informational links:

Please pass the information along to as many people as possible.

So... are you trying to get rid of off-leash times all together or are you trying to step up enforcement during non-off-leash hours?

Great question.
I will once again become a devoted anarchist in order to prevent any attempts to do away with off-leash times in the Long Meadow. It is one of the great things that make owning dogs and living near the park desirable. -

I'm with you - we LOVE off-leash hours. The romping dogs seem to mix pretty well with other people using the park - it's practically an Attraction for some. And then (poof) the dogs are gone.
Livetotravel, you mentioned in another thread that you saw a couple people getting tickets for off-leash in the park. When and whereabouts? -
2 separate times on weekdays one around 10:00 AM and another time around 7:00PM - both along the walkway between the 3rd St entrance and the Tot Lot

The above blog is run by the Juniper Park Civic Association which has brought a lawsuite to try and eliminate off-leash rules for dogs. This is a neighborhood in Queens which is trying to push their desires on all of NYC. They do not want a dog run in their park and do not want dogs to be allowed off leash.
It has been rumored that the effort is politically motivated by an individual who is trying to gain support of the local anti-dog crowd to secure himself an elected position.

Subject: Misinformation
Ben is a perfect example of how some individuals disseminate misinformation to justify their misguided ideas.
I am the creator and only editor of

The Juniper Park Civic Association has nothing to do with it. I live in Brooklyn and have never even met any of the members of the JPCA. I created the blog because the unleashed dog problem in Prospect Park is even worse than that of Juniper Park. I've kept my name off of the blog because of past, unpleasant experiences with some dog owners in Prospect Park. Even if the blog was maintained by JPCA, would that make the articles and professional links any less true?
The above blog has INFORMATION, not opinions, from sources such as the ASPCA, the Humane Society, AKC, the CDC, etc. -
