Tea Lounge — Brooklynian

Tea Lounge

edited November -1 in Park Slope
Do you guys hang out at Tea Lounge on Union street? I keep finding myself there lately, but I am not sure if I like it that much. I was there earlier tonight, and had a really good Iced Mocha, but the live band- Jazz Jam session, or whatever you want to call it, was really terrible. What are those people thinking when they allow such squeaky "music" to be played on that stage, also, what's the deal with those huge posters of naked pregnant bellies and breasts? and why do the tiny cookies cost $1 each??

i thought those were the real deal, not posters... every time i've ever been there i've seen at least 45 nursing and pregnant women.

not the place i want to be.
  • i think those are photos
  • i'm a much bigger fan of the old tea lounge on 7th ave and 10th street. good vibes, small and cozy, people fall asleep in the chairs and nobody cares, old hippies.

they don't have nearly as many fattening baked goods as the other one, but one of the baristas has a reputation for being super flirty and awfully cute (which he is).
  • I think they both suck. I was sitting on one of the chairs in the 7th Ave. location and I felt like I had fleas by the time I left.

The Union St. one is just too full of babies and people whose heads whip around the minute you walk in the door to see if you're cute (I am cute, but that's another story  )

I'm also tired of people thinking that coffee-servers are gods.

"People like me. Just ask my neighbors". I can't remember who said that here, but I've been known to turn a head or two. Then again, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  • I've only been to the 7th Ave one. The coffee is bad, the pastries are greasy, and the ratty old sofas are nasty.

how u know? been out on a date or something :D
  • i don't know. i went to hippie summer camp and hippie boarding school and hippie art school, and the tea lounge feels a lot like those places to me. musty and comfortable. (and not surprisingly, a lot of my former classmates live in the neighborhood and i have run into any number of them there).

it's kind of like the dorm living room, or a dusty old summer house. don't know, i just like it there.

  • Tea Lounge on Union Street is OK. I wouldn't go there to drink or sit at the bar, but it's a good spot to use your laptop, sip tea, and chat with friends. The music gets a little loud sometimes.

The coffee servers? You mean the people behind the counter in front of big tip jar we eventually see after waiting in line for 20 minutes? Tea Longue's staff is nice enough, but not the fastest. A lot of dirty plates and mugs lay around on various coffee tables throughout the day, long after the original nibblers gave up sipping and nibbling and walked away. I have seen dirty plates remain undisturbed for over two hours. Maybe Tea Longue needs to hire more help. Who knows....

By the way, what's up with tip jars at any place that requires you to walk up to the counter and grab your own sugar, napkins, etc.? Am I tipping the person behind the cash register for not ignoring me?
  • I go there because my friends want to and I want to spend time with them. By posters of pregnant bellies and breasts, yes, I did mean Photos. But they are poster sized photos. It's a bit disturbing. I have not seen any children in the tea lounge, so I don't see why everyone keeps mentioning all the small kids... I suppose they are there during the daytime, but I go in the evenings.

I think I would like it better if they didn't have such ratty sofas and chairs. A nice sheet cover would make them so much more comfortable and cleaner! They also need to only book bands that don't make people's ears bleed!

In conclusion, those are the reasons I don't like the tea lounge. Other than that, it could be a pretty cool place. They make a wonderful iced mocha.

photos of pregnant women are NOT disturbing. get over yo bad self!
a friend is pregnant and due in a few weeks.
she wants me to take some photos of herself before she gives birth
    ain't nothing wrong with that

since you're new . . . ever hear of Gorilla?
    waaaay better coffee
Tea Lounge is overpriced and relatively un-delicious, at least for iced coffee.
The daytime scene is a toddler horror, well documented on this site.
  • I'm not sure if this thread is about flirting with Flexichick or the Tea Lounge. It seems like most of the threads these days are one or the other.

T-Lounge on 7th has really good cupcakes. I actually stopped in there last night and bought a couple and a raspeberry thingie to serve for dessert. The furniture smells like a peculiar combination of dirty hippie ass and baby ass, and is uncomfortable and the service is slow as shit.

    However, the cupcakes are yum.

was it the raspberry ruggeluch bar? those are yummy

Agreed, Gorilla, by far the best coffee in the Boro as well as the City. That is if you're a true hardcore coffee drinker and can handle it. So if you're looking for a good cup of Jones, Gorilla all the way. If you're looking for a place to hang-out, not so much. It's not late night and there isn't any form of entertainment (other than wi-fi service that is)
    Good cup of coffee, Gorilla.

Somebody please pay Steve some attention.

It was indeed. I liked it much. Raspberries should show up on my menu more often.
