Low water pressure? — Brooklynian

Low water pressure?

Some neighbors and I on Classon Ave are experiencing low water pressure. We think it might be because of the Atlantic Yards construction, the Eastern Parkway construction, or both.

Is anyone else experiencing something similar? Basically, is this really a problem beyond our building?

Comments

  • Folks in the former hospital complex are experiencing low water pressure as well.

  • Yes, that's where we are. I'm wondering if the problem goes beyond...

  • I'm on Classon btw St. Marks and Bergen and haven't experience any problems. Good luck getting it resolved.

  • Good data, thanks! (Maybe it's our management blaming these probjects?)

  • The Eastern Parkway project is likely not to blame.

    A. They are presently replacing sewage pipes, not water supply.

    B. A knowledgable source tells me buildings along Eastern Parkway are not experiencing water pressure problems.

  • More good information, thanks so much!

  • As it stands now, the best course of action seems to be to call 311 / file a complaint which should take up about 5 minutes of your time.

Will ask you where you live, your first name, last name and phone number-- I don't think they asked for my apartment #

The more people that call --probably the better so that they can see its a clusterphuck

  • Reposting from PH:

I suppose this is related to Project ID#: BED778 scheduled for completion in Summer 2012 (Uhmm ....I can't wait that long to take a shower in the morning)

I think Maria Centeno, Director, Office of Community Outreach & Notification DDC, of project need to be contacted -- but I could not find her direct contact info

So, I contacted Matthew Monahan, "Public Information"

    http://www.nyc.gov/html/ddc/html/contact/contact.shtml

to give notice that work is impacting Lincoln Place and Classon -- asked that he try to mitigate the situation and that he advise what hours work shall begin (work/water is supposed to be restored by 6 PM each day)

    Some Water Interruptions

During the course of this project, you may experience water service disruptions. Water may be discolored by

sediment that has built up in the older pipes, including the service connection to the internal pipes in your own

building. Even if no construction is performed in front of your building the process of shutting down the old pipes

can result in discoloration. If this occurs, run ONLY COLD WATER until it appears clear. If it will be necessary for us to turn off your water service, you will receive written notice informing you by the afternoon of the day before service interruption. We suggest you store drinking water to have available in your home or business for the

period that water service is suspended. Water service is always restored at the end of the workday. Be sure to

turn off any open valves or faucets to prevent flooding when water service is restored.

Note If your water service is NOT restored by 6:00 pm, unless the shutoff notice gives special information regarding non-standard hours (e.g. overnight work), please call the 311 Service Center available 24 hours a day

  • I live on Classon btw St. Marks & Bergen and unlike my neighbor above in my area, I HAVE been experiencing low pressure for about a week now. I'm really glad others are discussing this, I thought it was just my building.

I love Brooklynian, I always find out things about the neighborhood I wouldn't otherwise know about. Thanks, guys.

  • So far I have been interfacing with 311, Community Board 8, NYCDDC (NYC Department of Design and Construction) & DEP (Department of Environmental Protection) [via 311 and NYCDDC]

and have been sure to express that we can understand that there are improvements going on that may have short term negative impacts such as low water pressure. I just want to be sure that the community has information that can be used to mitigate inconveniences.

Right now there may be some confusion (unfortunately I may have contributed to this) as to which project is impacting our water pressure ....

it may not be Project ID#: BED778 (mentioned above)but may be Project ID#: BED779 (Eastern Parkway)

In any case, I'm trying to nail down the hours of construction and have been told that construction typically begins at 8 am which does not jive with our experiences for the past week--

I will keep all posted as I hear it.

  • Hi Folks

I am still interfacing with DEP & NYDDC who are still investigating the issue --

I gave specifically Lincoln Between Washington & Underhill--and did mention folks on Classon are having similar problems

HOWEVER, if Classon residents or Anyone else reading this wants to make certain that their water pressure issue is addressed please Give me your street AND CROSS STREETS and I will be sure to relay the info.

If you want to PM me your specific details I can relay that info too (at your option)

    Cheers.

  • Due to our ongoing persistence, Today, DEP performed a valve survey, and turned on a few valves which should alleviate the problem.

Please be sure to report here any pressure problems!!!!

  • Cool, thanks!! I did call 311 with my info last week. My pressure is still low as of this morning, though.

  • Lincoln Place was "o.k." this morning -- I PMed you some contact info that might be helpful

  • I just hit up the PH thread ... you folks having problems again????

  • Nope all good on Nostrand.

    Work Hours

Typical working hours are 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. weekdays.

    What to Expect

We have planned this construction to occur in stages to minimize disruption and inconvenience to residents, pedestrians, and drivers. Some restrictions will be necessary, however, to complete the work.

Please take note of the following:

    • Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

    • Vehicular access may need to be temporarily restricted, generally during work hours.

    • Signs will be posted informing residents of necessary street closures and/or limited access.

    • Parking may be temporarily restricted where necessary to allow construction to proceed. Signs will be

    posted indicating the temporary restrictions.

    • Driveway access may be temporarily restricted in order to perform certain work.

    Special Needs

Individuals with special needs who may be uniquely impacted by this project should contact the project's Resident Engineer, Community/Business Liaison, or Engineer-In-Charge as soon as possible, to make them aware of your situation. We will work with you to attempt to minimize the inconvenience as much as possible.

    Sidewalk Violation Notices

Prior to sidewalk installation, the NYC Department of Transportation will inspect your sidewalk. If a violation exists, a sidewalk violation notice will be issued to you. Included with this violation notice will be a Preliminary Inspection Report (PIR) indicating the square footage you will be assessed for. Your sidewalk will be installed in no less than 45 days. During this 45-day period, you may request a reinspection by DOT that may result in a revised PIR. When the sidewalk is installed DDC will notify the NYC Department of Finance to assess you for the work completed in accordance with the final PIR. For more details, please contact our Community Construction Liaison or visit the NYC DOT website at www.nyc.gov/dot.

    Property Damage Concerns

Under the terms of the contract, the Contractor is responsible for the repair of any proven property damage and restoration of the construction area, including sidewalks and curbs, to at least the condition that existed prior to the start of construction.

As a protection for the City of New York and the property owners along the route of the construction, preconstruction pictures are taken. The contract requires the Contractor to maintain property damage and liability insurance coverage until the completion of all work. You are advised to inform the Contractor and the Resident Engineer in the first instance of any property damage you may have, and if the Contractor fails to respond within 10 days, you should inform the DDC Borough Director in writing.

    Important

If you believe the city is responsible or if you wish to file a claim with the city you must do so within 90 days of the occurrence with the New York City Comptroller’s Office. For information please contact the Construction Community Liaison or Resident Engineer.

  • Am I the only one here that finds it breathtaking that the process of changing out 10 blocks of water mains and rebuilding some sewers has taken two-and-a-half YEARS, has had a major artery (Washington Ave) CLOSED to traffic for most of it...and is costing taxpayers $14 MILLION? (And that was the original estimate in 2010, back when the project was scoped to wrap up in late 2012, not "Summer 2013")

Anyone who walks by that money pit at Washington and Atlantic twice a day can attest that not that much work takes place on any given day. And some of those giant DiFazio Construction backhoes have been parked there - unmoved - for months on end. No doubt "on rent" at our expense the entire time.

I'm no infrastructure expert but I do build big outdoor shows with heavy equipment and union crews - and I have an educated hunch that a project like this could be knocked out in a month or two if there weren't so many parties making a living off dragging these things out as long as possible.

Forgive my speculation-driven rant, just had to say it.
