Optimum Online Connection Issues?

  • My Cablevision's been down for about a month now. Weak signal, and since I live on the 2nd floor it's been an adventure trying to coordinate getting access to the backyard with my neighbors
  • They came by and fixed it today. Gave me my own connection from the pole and everything. Currently running at 9MBPS down and 2MBPS up.
  • so does anybody have any ideas about my issue?
  • AARMA wrote: so does anybody have any ideas about my issue?
No, not really. Check out your DL/UL speeds at speedtest.net. I don't think that you're experiencing difficulties not related to any of the issues being discussed here. If you are seeing low speeds, particularly upload speeds, call cablevision and ask, but I think that it's pretty well established that cablevision isn't the most torrent-friendly service provider around.

Google "cablevision" and "torrent" if you have any doubts.

You might have a shitty setup.....

They may need more feeds into your building. I had a low signal because my tap from the pole was shared with my 2 other neighbors. So if you're in a big building, you might be sharing one connection with like 8 other apartments or w/e. If they have more ports, they should hook you up... but if they can't, you're SOL.

Verizon has a 7MBPS plan that might match up... but I have no experience with it. It is definitely more reliable though. When my connection went down I would ALWAYS find a VZ connection.
  • Where i live verizon is not available.. i hope they get here soon tho.) thanks for the info on proper setup, i'm gonna have to check it. they're coming to run a new cable for me directly to the modem; my house is pretty old so they told me the cable that was already here is outdated...
p.s. Those lucky ones which have Verizon Fios what are your opinions about the service?

Interesting - a speed test from Google. Not sure how accurate it is though?

It said I was 9.65 mbps versus the isp average of 4.47!! I'm in Bushwick so I have less issues than you folk (less competition for the lines I guess) but still, that seemed very higher than average.
  • Had a tech out to the house last Fri., after I sort of lost it with Cablevision customer service. He was sympathetic, professional, and friendly. I explained the situation, my theory about Cablevision's lack of capacity in the area, and he agreed. He said he would run the issue up the flagpole, and encouraged me to complain again if the problem wasn't resolved within two weeks. For a few days speeds seemed good--about 6-9 megs down. But last night it dipped below 500 kbps (and downloading a movie I wanted to watch became impossible). Maybe we can get Google to serve the neighborhood when they roll out their fiber test networks.
  • Subject: CV is Traffic Shaping/Throttling!

A big THANK YOU to whomever in this thread mentioned that they'd upgraded to Boost and had no more problems.

I've spent the past 8-10 weeks trying to get to the bottom of this recurring pattern where during the day I easily get 15Mbps, sometimes even more, but at night it dropped to 1Mbps or even 0.7.

A guy came out, measured signals, said everything was peachy in the house. Installed a new modem and left. The next day the problem was back. Several weeks later another guy came, measured again, said levels were fine, but told me he'd been on many calls in the neighborhood, and there was a problem 'outside'. He alluded to the fact that maybe I should upgrade to the Boost package.

In previous conversations tech guys on the phone said this wouldn't make a difference, but then I read in these forums someone upgraded and had no more problems.

Today's tech guy wasn't much help, suggesting another visit. I hit the roof when I measured all of 0.6Mbps, stopping my new Roku dead in its tracks. He suggested that as an alternative I upgrade to Boost. I asked him why. He said: "because the *guaranteed* speed for regular optimum online is 1.5Mbps down" -- yes, 1/10th of what they're selling it at -- "and optimum Boost is guaranteed for 15Mbps (and up to 30Mbps). The first month is free, just give it a try..."

I've just upgraded online. Took 5 mins and costs an additional $14,95 a month. Right after I hit "confirm my order" I was off-line as my modem rebooted. A mere 30 seconds later I'm back online and everything seems rather speedy. I do a test... and guess what: I get an easy 18Mbps down and 5.2Mbps up.

WTF!?!? Three months of suffering is solved in 5mins and +$15/mo?

So... this leads me to conclude that the REAL issue here is not limited bandwidth, issues with my hardware (routers, PCs, etc.) or even the hardware/connections down the block. CABLEVISION IS LIMITING bandwidth to the "normal" customers (traffic shaping/throttling).

    I am beyond **pissed**.

I've been suffering for 3+ months, and perhaps more, never used my internet much, but got a Roku box in Dec which **never** worked properly even though it requires just 4.5Mbps for HD quality streaming. This was the first time I checked the throughput and then the ordeal started.

I'm gonna file a complaint. Anyone wanna join me?

  • Super slow all weekend and every night, I get 20 Mbps at 3:00 PM and less than 1 Mbps at 9:00 PM.

Cablevision just blames the customer, "It's your router, it's your operating system blah blah"

I agree with Blkaddr, I think this is a backdoor marketing tool.

Why would I pay for more bandwidth when they can't deliver what I'm already paying for though? My problem is not that 15 Mbps isn't enough!

  • 5 years was good Optimum and now Oct-Dec 2011 .. (Cropsey-17th) the worst Internet provider. ping to yahoo, from 45 ms up to 890 and lost total. It happened every morning from 2-5 am until 12 pm and after 12 pm Internet stable, but with different speed. I'm lost my 2 month of work, Relocated my servers, and days of hearing they stupid music on the phone. (I have 'ultimate' Internet since Nov). I got 8 guy from Optimum and 1 engineer, opened more when 7 tickets (6 tickets was closed in one day). And this is for business account, which they have to resolve in 4 hours. And this is in the Brooklyn!!! Wow!! Do anybody have any ideas about another Internet provider in Brooklyn? I tried FiOS, but the have 3Mb/700kb in my area, also I'm waiting 4G internet modem with 6Mb/6Mb. Anything else I miss? I don't want T1 line, this is not right decision for High Speed Internet. Thank you for any advice.

  • ^^^ they sent out email notification that they'd being doing maintenance and that interruptions would primarily happen at night. As much as I like to bag on them, they gave a heads up.

During this upgrade you may experience a temporary interruption of your Internet connection. To minimize disruption to our customers, the upgrade will take place during the early morning hours of 1:00 a.m. - 6:00 a.m.

    1) blah, blah, blah etc

  • Yeap.. They told me everyday what doing something. I know 3 manager by name and phones, 6 coming people, 3 operators and one engineer. And I don't believe them.

Because they have no clue what is happening with line time to time. But I think the line just overload.

  • Very strange! Exactly one year ago we had an outage (reviewing this board) and here we are today with an outage. 1 year later ---Xmas eve! Again!

    :santa:

  • Everything working great here on St Johns Place.

yes, me too. on saturday we barely had service. could read some web sites, but they loaded slowly, receive some e-mail but not send, etc. tried rebooting everything to no avail. called cablevision and set up an appointment for today. today it's fine so we cancelled the appointment. wtf?

  • You (sometimes) get what you pay for.

  • Cablevision's premium Ultra service.

It's $99/mo -- worth it if you often work from home and get most of your media from the internet.

nice -- I just received this message at 1AM - like a couple days after the outage

  • there appear to be some system problems in prospect heights. we had almost no internet signal on saturday, it was back on sunday, down again on tuesday, back weds. we had a tech over on tues and they sent one of their outside people on weds. today (thursday) i saw one of the outdoor techs on park place and he said he was responding to several complaints. so clearly there's a problem outside of our houses, although cablevision doesn't always seem to be able to figure out that if a lot of people call from the same neighborhood that it's a bigger problem. (the 1st tech who came over wanted to replace our modem, which seems to be the first answer to everything if rebooting doesn't work.)

if you're not getting proper service, please call them and let them know.

  • i've had the same cable modem for 8 years so I was thinking the same thing when it happened.

It's amazing how far technology has gone in the last 8 years -- but my cable modem remains the same.....not that there is anything wrong with that...

  • Modems have changed. Multi-channel DOCSIS standard v3.0 is technically required for speeds above 42mbps, though you are not likely to see these without shelling out for the Ultra service.

That said, even with standard service you may attain better latency and throughput with a newer modem, as their processing power has improved over the years.

why shell out money? next time you have a computer issue, call cablevision, they'll send a tech who will pretty much automatically give you a new modem. you're already paying for it.

  • No Internets Today!!!

    :wtf:

because then I have to wait for a tech.

    I assume they still don't honor real appointment ;

Like between 1 PM and 2:30PM for example

I'm sure its more like "you have an appointment for 1/5/2012" and pray someone shows up.
