I wonder how keyfood - Washington ave will be affected?

Man, if I have anything to do with it, I'll do whatever I can to put Keyfood on Washington out of business. I hate them so much, it's actually become personal.

I'm hitting Compare in a bit- so verreh excited.

  • Been lurking for years, but just created an account to give a thumbs up to Compare. Friendly staff, spacious & clean layout, decent prices & selection. Went in to just grab a few things and ended up having to get a cart because orange juice was on sale. They've definitely got my business for the time being.

  • Just got back. Spent a lot of time going up each aisle (yes, it's a slow news day), and am pleased with Compare. Are they perfect? No, BUT the difference between these guys and all the other crap around here is they actually give a shit (for the time being, anyway), so I'm going to take full advantage. Seafood guy is SO adorable (in that adorable seafood guy kinda way).

  • nice supermarket. i love customer service, free samples and clean, wide aisles..lol

the staff went out of their way to find me some smoked gouda.

and the fish guy had me at $2.99 tilapia filets woo hoo!!

  • so weird that you guys all talk about getting bombed with flyers before this opened up... i live on grand between prospect and st marks and would have had NO IDEA this was open (i walk home from either EP or from 7th ave, so it's unlikely i'd pass it randomly). it's about the same distance from my house as NSA (which, admittedly, is HUGELY improved since its c-town days) so i'll be heading over there for my next grocery trip... just seems weird they'd neglect to inform residents so close by.

looking forward to checking it out though.

  • Just wanted to voice my happiness with the fish market at Compare. Fish was an almost non-existent part of my diet growing up. The few times that I did have fish, it was off-putting or, at best, uninspiring. The handful of purchases at Compare have been promising enough that we now look for fish recipes when planning out weekly meals. It's a start.

  • yes, I have concluded that their seafood is much better than the selection available at the next closest place to me: Western Beef.

  • Finally got over there this afternoon. Man, what I would give for the Met on Vanderbilt to be this nice! Wide aisles, and a nice selection of produce and fish.

Price-wise I thought Compare was pretty good, if not better than, those markets further west. Product wise I thought they were pretty solid (without being too deep) in the "normal" suburban grocery-store items, and I was impressed (only because I don't know much about this) with the West Indian selection. I was sorely tempted by the spicy smoked-mackerel paste. I could imagine that adding an amazing taste to some fish chowder (am now hungry...)

  • Biggest issues:

    1) no beer

    2) no unsweetened Silk

Otherwise, agreed, this is a very nice store.

  • ^^^ yeah, I was in there again today, and found myself a little peeved that they still didn't have beer.

  • I agree about the no beer being a bummer, although grocery stores tend to only carry macros they know they can move a lot of. The bodegas in the area surprise me a lot - and the beer place on Washington is great for stocking up.

Ask about the Silk -- I said I wanted Light 8th Continent Soy Milk or Light Silk and they now stock it -- they're really great about getting what people ask for.

    But I agree-- GREAT store.

Ha! That's exactly where I went to get beer after I went to Compare. I wouldn't have bought beer there anyway--too far to schlep.

  • Dear Customers,

We gladly announce our sale of beer and wine.

Stop by today and if there's something you do not see we are more than welcome to accept your request(s).

    Happy Thanksgiving,

    Management

  • Soy milk (Silk brand is fine) would be great.

They always have soy milk when I go..

Awesome - I've been waiting for this ever since the store opened! (Not that it's kept me from shopping there almost every day...)

This is good news. Guess I haven't been in a while. Though my wife has, and she was shocked at the price of produce ($5 for a pint of Brussels sprouts).

Will continue to go there when it's convenient, but it needs to become cost-competitive with stores within a five minute drive (like the Key Foods on 5th and Sterling) in order to become our go-to place.

The median income is higher in Park Slope -- there seems to be little reason groceries should be cheaper there.

Is it possible she was in the organic section? $5 does seem steep for non-organic...

  • Nope. Not organic.

  • The guy who sells fish is no longer there.

The fish is no longer there.

Interested. It was there on Monday.

BUT THIS IS HELPFUL to me as a business mogul .... now the neighborhood needs a craft beer/case place AND a fish shop!

Fresh fish and beer store on Franklin anyone??

....too bad the name "Fish and Sip" is already taken.

  • Stop the presses! The fish has returned, and you now pay for it at the front registers.

  • Great news, will have to check out the quality of the under new management fish monger's stock. Since we previously had to pay separately I'd imagine the previous guy was an independent contractor renting out the space from compare. Glad to see they are still offering this service in house.

  • That's awesome news; I was almost inconsolable when the fish market disappeared. I'll definitely get a couple of things this weekend and report back!
