  • Not a tantrum, just stating the obvious. Based on the million posts you make on this board, it is clear you have serious social issues and prefer life not far from a computer.

Why don't you walk down 7th ave and take a note of all the well-established stores that have closed within the past year instead of thinking of what your next post will be re: some lame issue like the pros and cons of the PPPW bike lane.

Ha! Nice tantrum PMonk (actually it's pretty lame and random. Reminds me of Costanza's rant about people with complicated shoes). Boy, you're just angry aren't ya? And on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.

But you're right. A video store going out of business is definitely a sign that this entire area cannot support economic activity of any kind.

I mean look at the streets of Park Slope. Absolutely dead. No one going anywhere, no one buying anything. I just did three laps around Prospect Park without seeing another living person.

If only the remaining area businesses would heed your brilliant foresight and close up shop now, they may be able to prevent themselves from going broke. If only we'd all listen to your stellar intellect and sound judgment the world would be a much better place.

I don't blame you for always being so grumpy. I'd be too if I were you.

    Why don't you ...

    Yawn. :lame:

  • MOD NOTE: okay, enough. Please stick to the topic. (Insulting and attacking each other is *not* the topic.)

    Thank you!

Are you tired from all your lame posts?

Or is the prozac kicking in?

  • Why are you a troll?

  • Once again the mod system fails. So here's me doing it for you.

P Monk. MOD EDIT: THIS COMMENT VIOLATES SITE RULES AND HAS BEEN REMOVED.

Just letting you know how everyone feels.

OK, you can now lock this thread. Another one bites the dust.

  • Mod here. Just to remind everyone, if you believe that a post violates site rules you should report that post so that it can be reviewed by the mods and acted upon. Please remember, that just because you don't see it, doesn't mean a poster hasn't been warned about behavior that may come close to crossing the line. Thanks.

  • Add Puppets Jazz bar on 5th Avenue to the closed list.

  • Closings 1) the computer repair place on 9th Street between5 & 6 Ave is empty and has a for rent sign, this was not unexpected since they were trying to rent out part of their space for quite some time

    2) Uncle Moe's on 7th Av between 9 & 10th St, is looks like they just got up and left all their equipment behind, there is a for rent sign in the window.

Opening - the new falafel place on 9th Street just off 5th Avenue, the food is very decent and well priced, Primarily a take out place with two small tables. But it does not take the place of Fatoosh which had nice food and was a place that was very comfortable to sit and eat.

  • Add Great Lakes Bar on 5th ave. I used to like the place years ago, but they hired too many stuck-up hipsters with an attitude, so I'm not sure if I'm sad to see it go.

  • I just read that Leaf and Bean is closing after 39 years. They are not close to me but I might have gone out of my way to get there in the last couple of years if, the last time I was there, they were not so unbelievably and aggressively rude. I bought several pounds of coffee and, seeing a sign for the frequent buyers' card (buy 10 pounds, get the 11th free), I asked for a card but the woman behind the counter said "Why would you need one? I never see you here." It struck me that a smarter businessperson would not alienate a paying customer for no reason. Anyway, having said that, I don't wish any person in business ill, so if they're looking for another space, I hope they find one.

  • Brownstoner listed many of the local blogs that are no longer with us.....

    http://www.brownstoner.com/blog/2011/12/taking-stock-of-brooklyns-blog-graveyard/#disqus_thread

    Slowly, the heard thins.

  • That Leaf and Bean chick was crazy sauce.

  • Truly.. I think Leaf and Bean was over for the Hood. I have lived here a long time and I remember when they were the only place to get a choice of decent coffee beans and tea that was not Tetley and celestial seasons. But availability of product and habits of drinking "morning" coffee at home or any coffee at home have changed. It was really a large store. If they find a smaller location and rent is right and stock carefullly they may be re-born.

  • o-k, maybe this is a little mean-spirited, but does anyone want to add a new spin to this discussion?

which businesses do you think will be next to go under?

my guess? the new greek restaurant on 7th ave, across from leaf & bean.

  • Ooh, this could be fun. My guess is Scottadito, Sotto Voce, or one of the other ho-hum Italian restaurants best known for a bottomless mimosa brunch and not much else. Sette's already been claimed.

  • Is Comida closed?

(Sorry if this has been addressed previously on this post, but it *is* a long thread.)

  • Apparently Catene, corner of 9th street and 4th ave, has been closed for a few months. How did I miss that one? They served great heros, fried calamari and all lunch foods Italian. Family business that had been open for 46 years!

NNOOOOOOOoooooOOOOoooOOOOOOO!! That place was old school. They were so friendly and the food was great.

  • Y'ep... I will miss the existence of Catene a lot! Recent years I have not been such a sutomer but the rest of brooklyn kept it going.. including the cops, firemen, construction people and the list goes on and on and spans generations of customers.

  • I'm sorry to see Catene closing. It was a real neighborhood fixture but their erratic hours and not being opened when their sign said they would be opened discouraged repeat business, no matter how much I enjoyed their stuff in the past. I go to a place once that says they will be opened from w to y and they are closed, I get a negative feeling, I try to go again to get some calamari and plan my route to make their posted hours and they are closed again, I never go back.

This applies to many Slope business, not just ones that are posted as closed in this thread. My personal peeve is not being opened when your sign says you will be there. If I am making an effort to shop local, do me the courtesy of opening or closing when your sign says you will be there.

If my local drugstore says they will be open at 9, I don't want to have to wait outside in the cold until the owner decides to arrive 45 minutes later. If your threading salon says you will be open until 8 pm, why do I come to your storefront at 7 and the lights are out and the place is closed for the day?

  • Reader... I totally agree with what you said about Catene and other local businesses as well. Retail is a hard business but when you post your hours that has to be a commitment to your customers to be open for those hour. When I look at my history with Catene... that goes back 30 years there were many times when they were posted as open till 3pm and when I went there at 2;15 they had closed. If something like that happens once it can be ok but for sure that is the reason why over the last years they were not a go to place for me.

  • Why are we condensing all the openings/closings discussions into a single thread? I, for one, prefer individual posts for each place. Makes contributing and reading a LOT easier, IMHO.

  • Are they seriuosly going to open a Why Buy Gold store next to C-TOWN on 9th street between 5th and 6th???

  • What is a #Why Buy Gold" store? If it is what I think it is such a place was actually part of another store right there!Any one remember the kind of Hippie/head shop boutique callled Shop Therapy? part of the store was occupied by a Gold Exchange business.. right in the from left when you entered the space.

  • Opened/ Closed... what is the difference? They see, to happen in the Hood in rapid clusters.

  • Yeah, there's a "We Buy Gold" Pawnshop/Jewelry store/something? Opening on 9th St between 5th/6th Ave.
