Barrio relaunching as Barrio Plates — Brooklynian

Barrio relaunching as Barrio Plates

dailyheights
edited November -1 in Park Slope

"Park Slope Mex spot Barrio is slated to reopen Monday with a whole new look and concept, and a new name, Barrio Plates. Spencer Rothschild (Calle Ocho) has made over his operation with the help of chef Martell Fonville (Gramercy Tavern, al di là) and the revamped menu veers Nouveau American with just a few Latin touches — think calamari in Dominican-style honey glaze, short-rib sliders, chocolate flan. Meanwhile, the Technicolor paint job has given way to blown-glass fixtures and antiqued mirrors. Doesn't sound too much like the barrio anymore."

Consensus of BARRIO reviews is pretty much, great food but pricey:

And only 3 stars on Yelp: http://www.yelp.com/biz/barrio-brooklyn

Wonder how Barrio Plates will stack up on a deliciousness-to-price ratio. Tacking on "Plates" seems to imply that it won't be cheap.

Oh, and they're hiring: http://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/fbh/2790575907.html

  • Excellent news, I think!

  • The addition of the word "Plates" makes it sound like a tapas place. Small plates at large prices. I guess we'll see :-k

  • Caca on a small plate is still caca. Pass.

  • Aw I was all excited that this place finally closed. I had a HORRENDOUS experience with a (the?) manager here which seemed to mimic other people's experiences on yelp. Maybe the new management will add some business savvy to this place.

  • i had brunch there twice and really liked it.

  • So now MIX is closed, like a week after they had the sign installed.

  • Hyper turnover in that space. Barrio, then MIX, which only lasted about a month, and up next, Casa Ventura will be giving it a shot:

  • At what point will the new (?) proprietor figure out that s/he should NOT do another restaurant serving Spanish food, because potential customers associate the new place with the place that used to be there?

  • Wasn't there a Peruvian place in that spot a long time ago?
