Colson Patisserie on 9th Ave — Brooklynian

Colson Patisserie on 9th Ave

I stumbled upon the (new?) Caslon Patisserie on 9th St and 6th Ave this morning while walking to the Van Brunt post office (my experience at the P.O. will be covered in another post...).

The Caslon was really nice. A succinct but delectable-looking assortment of pastries, a few very nice looking chilled treats, and some gelato. I had a Brioche Suisse, made with pastry cream and semi-sweet chocolate. It was divine and was the only thing that made my 45-min wait at Van Brunt bearable.

How long has Caslon been open? Any positive/negative experiences there?

  • It's only been open a month or two. Never been.
  • Ok, re-reading my post I realize that I sound like a complete plant schilling for the Caslon.

I swear to god that I'm not... I just really enjoyed my brioche. I'm also a complete whore for cute little patisseries, especially on 9th St.
  • hey Pres, actually thanks for the post, it was my option B of places to stumble upon on my way home on my quest for new desserts.
  • It's Colson Patisserie, they have a website here (no real info on it other than contact info): http://www.colsonpastries.com/

I only went in once but was a little surprised at what it was. I was expecting a place with a heavy focus on pastries and the like plus some coffee, etc. Instead I found that they are more of a cafe with a pretty big selection of sandwiches and salads.

I was actually a bit disappointed on the pastry front, it was the afternoon and I was looking for something sweet but they only had things that were more like breakfast breads, croissants and so forth. I didn't see anything that was more dessert like. I ended up with a scoop of their home made ice cream which was pretty good.

I'll check it out again now that I know more about what they are offering.

I think you mean Colson. From the august 16 Times

"Hubert Colson owns a pastry shop in Mons, Belgium. Yonatan Israel, a native of Paris, is a filmmaker in New York. Together they have opened Pâtisserie Colson"

  • Good call, I need to buy desert for after dinner.
  • Colson, yes. Thanks!
  • Hey Prez, thanks for the reminder of Colson.
Checked them out on my way home last night on my quest for good LOCAL dessert.
was bummed they were out of the Brioche Suisse you had described (they only had the one w/ raisins left, phooey) HOWEVER while they did have a lot of criossant on hand and breakfast type nosh, what someone here did NOT mention is they have a lovely variety of small (single portion) tarts.
Since it was later in the day (around 7pm) the selection was a bit soft, but I did a little mix and match action and we did a tasting of all the tarts.
Not sure if anyone has been to City Bakery in Chelsea but they looked pretty similar. tastewise, I think Colson's were actually better.
We tried, an apple tart, a mixed berry on custard tart, a rice/almond something or other tart (sorry for not remembering names here, LOL) and THEE best was a simple creamy custard whip cream tart that was just the perfect balance of custardy creamy sweetness but not heavy on the sweet, or thickness. it was light - it was fluffy- it was yum. I think that one ran $3.50, the berry was $4.50. Also tried the rasberry squares which were a nice balance of sweet and tart (kind of like Trixie - DOH!) and these little "button sized" muffin-y nuggets that were half chocolate at the bottom/half yellow cake.
so, for 4 tarts, 2 rasberry squares and 2 of those little button like thangs, it ran me $19.50 and was plenty for dinner for 4.

They do have tables, I'd guess they could seat 16 at most, they do have an extensive sandwich menu, they have housemade gelatos/ice creams (flavours change daily), etc.
for the variety and the quality, I think they are a good deal in comparrison to other "dessert" shops I've been in the neighborhood (chocloate room/cocoa bar). Same for Cousin "whatever his name is" on 7th.
My new preference for desserts is Colson. Nowhere else so far, in our area, PARK SLOPE, has made a dessert that I actually craved to go back for a return visit.

How does it compare to the other patisserie on 9th? the one next to C-Town. I think their flourless chocolate cake is to die for and great little quiches

Haven't tried it yet, I'm still somewhat "new to the neighborhood" (ack, a whole year and have YET to go to the park, mind you its like 2 blocks from me)
I can't even say I knew the place existed, is it new-ish?
my friend used to live on 9th and 6th, otherwise I usually don't go that far from home, with the exception of my bank being WaMu on 14th and 5th....and it's not for any other reason than sheer laziness!

is it all patisserie or a combo cafe a la colson?
  • I think you mean "Delices de Paris" or something like that. Sort of between El Viejo Yayo and C-Town, right?

I've never been in there, but it's not new. Been there for at least several years.

Trixie is making me hungry ("these pretzels are making me thirsty").
  • I always somehow manage to make you hungry don't I?

I'll check out Delices de Paris soon, it's between 5/6, correct? off my beaten path (I'm never over there) yet, if it's worth the trip, I'll go for it.

Yes, between 5th and 6th. You should go there one day after coming from that big green thing (you know, the "park"!)
  • The Brioche Suisse w/ raisins is actually pretty great, in a wholesome breakfast sort of way . . .

the ice creams (okay, gelati) are better at Presto Pronto
(or whatever that sandwich place is called on Fifth Ave midblock at Garfield, next to mothership fancy restaurant)
