Jogging safety in Prospect Park

I usually run there starting around 5:30 am. When the weather is good, there are always lots of people out running, walking, walking dogs or riding bikes. I'm rarely not within "screaming" distance of someone else. You see a lot of groups of runners, in pairs as well as a couple of trios.
It's well lit most of the way around the park and there is even traffic in there sometimes (most likely not quite legal since it's too early for it).
The most dangerous thing I've seen is a gang of raccoons.
Don't know your gender but for what it's worth, I feel comfortable as a guy running alone and I see about as many women as men running by themselves.

Not sure about those AM hours, but I typically run after work these days and I feel comfortable as a woman. I typically hit the park between 6 and 6:30pm and there are still plenty of people in there. I plan to start running in the early AM hours before work this week and I don't have any reservations about it. If you fee like the loop inside the park makes you uncomfortable, you can always run the perimeter.

Great -- thanks very much!

Lots of people out there at 5am.
If you are looking for a running partner check out the Prospect Park Track Club. (Don't let the track in our name scare you, we are not all that fast.)

I ride in PP on Tuesday/Thursday mornings and for the most I think it's a pretty safe environment (the stupid "salmon" being the exception but we'll save that for another day and another thread) but today I saw something that kind of creeped me out.
There was a gentleman driving a blue Ford Taurus that was going less than the speed limit and when he got my women who were jogging he slowed down even further. He was a heavy set white guy with dark hair and a scraggly bear. He had NY plates that started with FFP.
He drove in the inside lane and I watched him from just before the Wollman rink entrance until he disappeared up the hill. I would say he was going about 20 mph but when he passed women jogging his brake lights would come on for a second and he would slow down .
I didn't see him on my next two laps but I will start to keep an eye out for him in the future.

Yikes! Someone get me an editor.
It should be "when he got by women" and "a scraggly beard".
Howdy, Stranger!
