Sunday afternoon tickets in Grand Army Plaza
I got a $130 ticket 2 sundays ago for not using a turn signal when I entered grand army plaza from vanderbilt avenue and went from the far right lane (3 lanes) to the far right lane (4 lanes). When I went by an hour later I saw somweone pulled over at the same spot. Since then I have watched and seen almost every car entering the far right lane do the same thing....incuding cars this afternoon that were passing the same policemen who ticketed me. They were in the same spot today. There is no traffic entering the circle from Flatbush when Vanderbilt has the green light, the lanes on the road do not make it clear which lane the far right lane feeds into...It is not clear that you need a turn signal there.. BEWARE!

Sorry about the ticket, but the law is pretty clear, arbitrary enforcement aside. If you're changing lanes, you're required to signal, including for merges. It has nothing to do with what feeds into what.
-
Turn signals are pretty much the rule when switching lanes, going into a fork, pulling out of a parking space, etc. Rule of Thumb should be whenever you steer inside or outside of a lane, use the signal.
-
Thank you for your insights on the proper use of the turn signal but you are missing the point. I was trying to give people a heads up so they may avoid an expensive ticket at a particular spot that I believe has very poor road markings which results in several people doing the same thing I did almost every time the light changes. Its like shooting fish in a barrel for the police.

Another warning on Grand Army Plaza: they have a red-light camera installed:
Red Light Camera Enforcement
In selective areas in the city, red light cameras are installed to make money for the city. Usually the camera is mounted on a metal pole in a gray or green box that houses the camera and a flash device. When a vehicle passes an intersection while there is a red light, sensors pick up the vehicle and triggers the flash and the camera takes a few pics of your license plate. A few days later a traffic summons is mailed to the owner of the vehicle.

Bonus - check out the number of cameras "DESTROYED by local residents":

The red-light cameras should be at every intersection.

It was so satisfying when that red-light camera went in at GAP. It's at a crosswalk which is extremely heavily used, as it's the main route from Park Slope to the library/museum/botanic garden and from Prospect Heights to the Park/greenmarket. At first, it would flash almost every time I was there, nailing drivers ignoring the light and cruising though that crosswalk, but recently I've seen that a lot less often, as drivers realize they can't bulldoze the crosswalk with impunity. I love it.
-
Wow that's a first, an actual ticket for failure to use a turn signal in NYC. It never fails to amaze me how few drivers actually use their turn signals in Brooklyn, although my favorite is when drivers use them after they're already half way through the turn. Even accounting for the parking spot searchers who make last second turns the percentage who use their signals is comically low.
-
Dollar vans are among the worst offenders at that GAP crosswalk. I see them honk the horn and blaze through the light long after it turns red, as they like to stop to pick up fares right in front of the bus stop.
I never see the camera go off -- is there one facing south?
-
Sad thing is that I don't think its going to deter anyone from rash driving... it will just give Bloomy more money.
-
I hate it. For anyone coming from Eastern Parkway and going to Union Street or Prospect Park West, there is now one more traffic light than there used to be.
That's good for the incompetent, fearful driver, but bad for everyone else.

Homeowner-
When observed from above, Grand Army Plaza has been compared to a vagina, so (you can be assured) many other people share your observation.http://standard-deviant.blogspot.com/2006/11/grand-army-plaza-is-giant-vagina.html
