Those trailers on Bergen Street between Classon and Franklin last week were for "Inside Llewyn Davis," According to Patch, the shooting went on inside 879 Bergen Street.

Total Film got the image above, and reports that the new film by Joel and Ethan Coen is focused on a character named Llewyn Davis (played by Oscar Isaac from "Drive") as his star rises in the New York folk music scene of the 1960s.

The film, which plays off the life of folk musician Dave Van Ronk, also stars Justin Timberlake (pictured) as Davis's musical rival; Carey Mulligan as Timberlake's wife; John Goodman; and Garrett Hedlund (see IMDB listing for more details).

As reported last month, the Coen Brothers transformed East Second Street into 1960s Greenwich Village with milk crates, metal garbage cans, throwback cars and extras in vintage costumes: "During the takes we saw, two cars rolled down the snow-dusted street and then a young man clutching a cat and guitar case crossed the road and walked into a building at 77 East Second Street," reports The Local - East Village.

The new Coen Brothers film should be in theaters by 2013.

Here's a clip of Dave Van Ronk, inspiration for the Llewyn Davis character, doing a tune called "Cocaine," which sounds an awful lot like "Freight Train," an early Americana song that was popular in the folkie era (and rhymes with "Cocaine" to boot):

  • VanRonk was one of my favorites in the early '60s. I very much regret missing him the one time he performed at Celebrate Brooklyn--he died a year or two later.

I usually hate the idea of commercial film-making on residential streets, but coupd probably make an exception for subject matter like this--not thst anyone cares :-)

film sounds like it could be interesting. for the record though, this song is "cocaine blues," popularized by the rev. gary davis, which van ronk, not to take anything away from this version, probably picked up from dylan.
