Coincidence? I don't think so. I call it El Destino!
  • I used to sleep like a freaking baby! Up until just a couple of weeks ago, I used to start falling asleep at around 11 or 12, but then my work schedule changed and now I'm back to falling asleep around 4am. WTF!
What's your excuse? I think that you just didn't stay out late enough tonight. I came home at 1:30am, but perhaps that wasn't late enough for moi, either.
  • i have insomnia almost every night, it really pisses me off... but what to do about it? i've tried it all... basically, sometimes things work, sometimes they don't.
  • Ambien =D> =D> =D> =D>
  • sex
    sex works
    at least for men :P
  • ambien, and other sleep meds, make me wired. enough to want to bang my head against a wall.
  • Me too :-(

I've tried it all - legal, illegal, sex, meditation......just not fucking sleeping and it's making me cranky.

    sex works for women too
    (good sex anyway)
  • sometimes a shot of vodka helps. sometimes.

i was talking with my doctor about it and he's all, "so if the pill isn't working you'll have a shot?"

me: yes, if about an hour's gone by

    him: that's not really smart

me: be honest, is it even close to turning me into karen ann quinlen?

him, sheepishly: not even close. but i don't want you doing it.

me: have YOU ever had insomnia?

    him: no

me: well if you had, you'd know that at some point in the middle of the night you'll do just about anything to fall asleep.

    him: oh

works sometimes. unless the person you've had the sex with falls asleep in 2 minutes and starts snoring. loudly.

give them a good shove, and make them turn on their side
    or

    kick them out

that's what karen ann quindlen would do, if she could
    (just speculatin')

Yes, that's my solution too, problem is you can't do it every night or it stops working and then you need to add a second shot, and eventually that would stop working and soon you'd end up drinking half the bottle and then you'd have bad drunken sleep.

If I'm anticipating insomnia (I used to get it bad every Sunday night), I'll take a Benadryl two hours before I go to bed and the shot of vodka right before bed. Again, this loses its effect if you do it too often.

Lately I've been falling asleep to meditation CDs. This will work for a while and then it will stop working. I've had insomnia on and off since I was in high school; if I could change one thing about myself that might be it. :(

    You said the magic word.

    Does Ambien bother your stomach?

    No

not at all. it makes me want to kill myself because i'm exhausted and yawning and falling over but completely unable to sleep.
  • I wanna be a pussy. No sleep for me AGAIN
  • I love Sex, Ambien, and Drinking and In That Order. All help me sleep, though drinking can make it hard for me to sleep well.

Melatonin is great, cheap, and safe. if you haven't tried it, you should.

I have a particularly high resistance to painkillers and narcotics, andI build up resistance to melatonin very quickly I've noticed, but as an occasional safety net, when I know I need to sleep, It's a winner.
  • Melatonin didn't do a damn thing for me
  • I used to have horrible insomnia and someone suggeted Melatonin. You can buy it at any drugstore and it's in the vitamin aisle. I used it on and off for about 2 years and now only take it when I have a problem falling asleep which is not that often. Give it a try-it's (to me) totally not addictive and doesn't give you a groggy morning. I started out taking 2 pills which is the suggested dose. It usually takes a couple of days to kick in...

Do you know how many migs you took?
  • No, it was too long ago for me to remember, but I know I tried it for a few weeks and tried upping the dosage.
  • side effects from melatonin can be wretched: vivid, vivid nightmares.

as far as it goes, i'd rather have insomnia.
  • Well, I know that exercise, particularly aerobic exercise is supposed to be very helpful. I also know that not eating after say 6, if you want to be asleep by 10 is a good idea.

I've been an light sleeper for years, but Mel and Amb really got me through a recent rough spot which was off the charts.
  • i know that when my studio days are packed--carrying 50-pound bags of clay, lifting really heavy kiln shelves, throwing for 4-6 hour stretches--i can sleep at night. it sounds crazy, but it's really hard physical labor. but these days have been far leaner, ergo no sleeping.
  • brooklynpotter wrote: side effects from melatonin can be wretched: vivid, vivid nightmares.

Yes, and horrible headaches. You could try a lower dose -- I did okay with 1 mg of melatonin -- I didn't get the side effects, but it was hit-or-miss for actually putting me to sleep.

Honestly, I think the best thing is to have a really regimented life: get up and go to bed at the same time every single day, even weekends. Exercise is good, but not at night. Have an early dinner, don't do any work at night. Sex seems to work much better for men than for women. :(
  • It sucks that you guys don't find Ambien effective. It was a god-send for me.

Insomnia is really a serious issue and I'm sure you all have read everything there is on the subject and taken great advice like that from Rose above.

In addition, calcium, magnesium and zinc as well as vitamins B Complex, B6, B3 and C supplements can all help calm the nervous system and help treat insomnia.

And lastly, seriously consider psychotherapy - I found it invaluable in dealing with some of the underlying causes of my insomnia.
  • yah, tried it all. the worst was "sonata"... i wanted to throw things. trazadone didn't put me to sleep and it made me congested.

the best was halcion, before they took it off the market. always worked for me, always. (which shows how long i've had sleeping problems, because it's been gone for a really long time).
  • i'm not crazy about taking ambien to fall asleep
all of the other methods mentioned work for me

    * exercise
    * food, with a beer
    * sex
    * proper vitamin supplementation including B complex
    * herbal supplements like melatonin, st. john's wort, gingko, etc.

    all work in combination

and then of course there are people whose sleep rhythms are always out of sorts for whom nothing outside of a night job will help

and you also need to take into account the planet's rhythms as well.
there's something very strong happening right now.
all sorts of turmoil/change are happening
