So my motorcyle was stolen on sunday. !0 years no issue but the piper came to play i guess.

Here is my question, what level of service is to be expected for 911?

I called sunday, they said wait there and the police would be there shortly. An hour later I called 911 again and they said it would be any minute. I gave up after two hours. Nobody ever called to follow up.

Today I went to the precinct at Bergen, they told me that it was the wrong precinct and you cant report it there anyway, you have to call 911 from 'the scene'.

On my way home I call 911. An hour later I call to see why they haven't arrived, the girl tell me she can see my call and will check why nobody has responded. It is two hours now and I'll probably give up and go eat.

So I guess my questions are,

1) What are the correct precincts for prospect heights?

2) Is waiting more than two hours too high an expectation for a non-violent crime?

3) Do they still have those monthly meetings with the precinct and the neighborhood?

4) Does anyone know the name of who would be in charge of said precincts?

I can't help but wonder how many people try to report crimes and end up giving up. I think this kind of sucks and I am really disappointed.

    Forget the precinct. Call the New York Post or the Daily News. There have been a number of published articles to the effect that the police department intentionally discourages citizens from filing crime reports, so as to keep crime statistics as low as possible. If a crime report is not taken, then the crime need not be solved, and there will be no adverse effect on crime statistics.

    Call your insurance company, and tell them what happened when you tried to report the crime. Let them fight with the police department.

    whynot_31 - thanks for the info. I finally got someone at the precinct and they said it was strange that nobody arrived or followed up. He said I should call when I get home and if nobody shows up AGAIN, that I should then call the precinct directly. The CO number is basically the precinct number, if you can get past the busy tones and recordings eventually you get someone.

    booklaw - I'm not sure I want to be involved in a spectacle, if there is an avenue to place a valid complaint I would be happy to do so.

    I was assuming that you'd need a police report in order to get insurance reimbursement for your motorcycle. If that is not the case, better yet!

    What bike was it? I'll be on the lookout.

    Did you have a lock on it? I've never had any problems with mine here, but maybe it's never too early to be cautious.

    Just wanted to give an update, I was actually walking down Dean with some friends and found my motorcycle. It looks like they tried to jump it, and dropped it getting there, but the battery was dead and the fuel was old. So they just left it on Dean.

    No thanks to the police for this one. I'll have to buy a bunch of new parts now.

    I will be contesting the ticket I got for the few days it was on Dean.

    I guess if improper maintenance of your motorcycle is not a good theft deterrent, at least it's a viable recovery mechanism.

    Tried to go to the community council meeting but the website is wrong, its held at New york and Dean or something at a church, thats the address of the precinct.

    The monthly meetings rotate btwn several locations. If you want to give feedback, you should call Officer Salters in the community affairs division. She is helpful and responsive.
