Home for our cat?
I'm REALLY hoping that I don't get bashed for this posting, as it comes with a quite a bit of sadness...
We need to find a new home for our cat, Moe, a 7-year-old diabetic cat. Due to our changing financial situation, we can't afford to take care of him anymore. Can anyone offer any advice on what to do with him? He's insulin dependent but is otherwise healthy and loving. I feel awful not being able to care for him anymore (I am also an insulin-dependent diabetic, so please believe me, I am feeling terrible), and I'd like to be able to find him a good home. Any leads on what to do?

Well you may want to start by contacting animal hospices and sanctuaries as he will be difficult to adopt out due to his age and medical issues and as this is kitten season any regular rescue will likely be unable to help. You will likely have to make a monetary donation towards his future care at a sanctuary and I advice visiting the place yourself as there are a lot of hoarders who call themselves sanctuaries out there. A hospice environment may be better able to care for his medical needs as he ages.
If you can try fundraising for his medical needs so that you can keep him for the remainder of his life that would be better. There are groups that give donations for animal medical care as well as pet food banks to help with basics.

Contact the Mayor's Alliance for Animals for possible aid in paying for meds.
Check with Berg Memorial, Hosp (ASPCA), the clinic at the Human Soc of NY (East 59th St), and the Animal Medical Center for similar referrals. -
Contact Pets for Life NYC Hotline which is open from 8 AM-8 PM (917-468-2938). My contact there is Bekah Wilcox. They can often help you in the event that you want to keep your cat but can not afford to do so. Speak with your family members and friends to see if they can take it on. Otherwise, sadly, jut humanely euthanize him. It's next to impossible to find someone to adopt a diabetic cat and at least you won't have the shelter take care of it for you.

Thank you SO much for all of the help. We haven't come to a decision yet, but I'm so glad to know that there ARE options for us.

I really hope you don't euthenise him, a plea on facebook can do wonders. He shouldn't have to die b/c of your circumstances.
