Save Our Streets Week: June 2nd - June 10th

Please join Save Our Streets Crown Heights (S.O.S.) for our second annual Save Our Streets Week, June 2nd – June 10th 2012. Come together with your neighbors to celebrate the reduction of gun violence in our neighborhood and to commit to taking action to make our streets safer.

The main event, the annual March to End Gun Violence,will take place on Thursday, June 7th, and will convene at Kingston Avenue and Park Place at 5:30 PM, and depart at 6:00 PM. Before the march, S.O.S. will host a block party from 12:00 – 4:00 PM on that same block.

Religious leaders throughout the neighborhood will commit their weekend services to nonviolence during the opening and closing weekend of Save Our Streets Week.

On Tuesday, June 5th, young men and women from the neighborhood will join in for a day of friendly recreation during the S.O.S. Peace Games in Brower Park.

On Wednesday, June 6th, Youth Organizing to Save Our Streets will lead young people from Crown Heights in a coordinated dance on Eastern Parkway to bring passersby attention to the issue of violence.

Lastly, join S.O.S. for a screening of Chisholm '72: Unbought and Unbossed on Friday, June 8th at 8:00 PM in the backyard of Candy Rush at 733 Franklin Avenue.

Shootings have been reduced in the S.O.S. target area in the past two years, from 23 incidents in 2010 to only 12 in 2011.

Neighborhood residents, clergy, merchants, and the S.O.S. outreach team, are working together to make gun violence unacceptable in our neighborhood. We’re starting off the summer with a renewed commitment to further reduce gun violence in our neighborhood.
