Moroccan coffee shop and restaurant for 708 Washington
The long-vacant storefront at 708 Washington Avenue will house a nouvelle-Moroccan coffee shop and wine-focused restaurant by September or October if the new tenant's plans come to fruition.
The planned name is Kimia - an Old Persian (pre-Arabian) word for "elixir" - an alchemic reference to the quest to create a fabled age-preventative potion from precious metals. Sounds like a nice change from the spate of new Jamaican and island restaurants; hopefully there will be enough adventurous eaters to keep the tables filled in the small space.
The owner promises to avoid Moroccan stereotypes like cous cous, focusing on lighter, healthier options like quinoa dishes - and more on wines than beers. Mornings will feature coffees, morphing into wine-bar / restaurant mode in the evening. Looking forward to one more option on what's become one of Washington Avenue's brightest blocks lately.

Sounds awesome.
On a lighter note, I hope their coffee comes with lids ...guests look like they will be upside down.

So strange. The rotated photo thing has happened a couple of times now. The photo is correctly oriented on my machine but uploads inverted. But displays correctly in Safari on my iPhone.
Any code-whizzes out there have a clue what causes this and how to correct it?
-
No, but when you drag the image to a desktop the image orientation is correct.
-
I'm looking forward to it- sounds like a great concept and just around the corner from me!
-
a Moroccan restaurant that promises not to serve couscous?? so then probably no tagine either? wow, no thanks.
-
I agree with Munny. I had awesome vegetarian couscous in the South of France recently and I realized it's probably one of the healthiest cuisines in the world - low on fat and sugar. I don't see how Moroccan food could be considered heavy.
There is also a very nice cous cous place in Amsterdam with a nice kitschy 50s decor that plays a lot of French musette accordeon music.
These experiences made me think that if I had a good couscous place near my home, I would eat there every day.
I'm very excited to see Kimia making its Washington debut, but I don't understand why the owner should be apologetic about his own cuisine even before the place is open. Please Kimia, bring on the couscous!
And Notsaying, please beat in mind that the Jamaican and Caribbean restaurants reflect the original and still very present folks that make up Prospect and Crown Heights. I don't need to see a change from these places: they are longtime Brooklynites creating new businesses.

No couscous? i will take my business elsewhere.

Obivously, Fall 2012 did not happen.
However, word has it that it will open in just a few weeks: Spring 2013
It also has become right side up

March 24, 2013
Work is happening today, and they had the door open.Work is complete to the degree that carpentry tools are no longer visible, one of the supervisors said they think it will open in around two weeks.

One month has passed, and it is now April 27th.
Workmen are present, arranging stuff and doing decorating.
Handwritten sign on door says "Opening Soon"..
-
I'm hearing that the actual spelling of the name of this place will be Kimiya, as opposed to Kimia (as it appeared in the Patch article)
...as of June 22, 2013 it is still supposed to open soon, but still has not.
-
Update: They have a facebook page, and it says they are opening this week, the last week of June 2013
-
They already have a sandwich board outside. Curious, I poked my head in, but as Whynot noted, they're not actually open yet (maybe the sign is just bait future customers?).
The owner was there, working on the menu with the chef. He gave me a glass of Moroccan iced tea & a date. Refreshing. I was also told that about 60% of the menu will be vegetarian.

photo: PatchThe Patch is stating it opens tomorrow, 6/29/2013.

I haven't seen Kimiya open in several weeks -- is it still open but with irregular hours? I would love to try it!
-
Sept 14: It is seemingly closed for good.
I believe it was open for less than 6 weeks, approx July 1 - Aug 15.
I fear a lot of money has (or is being) lost.

Now to be a Kosher place with beer!
-
wait what?! i have been waiting for them to open, only to find out they did(?) and now closed? always seemed closed when i walked by. how in the world do you implode so quickly. obviously not sales related...legal, licenses, internal fighting?
-
I don't know.
I just hope they were able to transfer their lease to the owners of the Kosher place, and sell the contents for a reasonable price.
Howdy, Stranger!
