  • Where? Where is this ad? I've googled and found nothing. Can you find this ad and post it here for all to see?

  • This is my hunch: In Monopoly board fashion, MySpace is making attempt to buy up all of the properties so that they can, in the same way Walmart controls wholesale prices -- dictate the cost of the service/product that they contorl. What free-market ideologues like CTK argue is that demand and supply determine market price, but when there is only one supplier, or when there are fewer suppliers, then the price of the good/service does not fluctuate, regardless of what the demand might be.

By buying out long time tenants, MySpace plans to control the socio-economic class of the group of people who live here, and therefore latently, the racial makeup of the neighborhood. When you as a prospective renter come to myspace, MySpace's intent is to guard the gate which determines whether or not you will enjoy the 'privilege' of living here. And to argue that it's okay for them to do this, is to say, that de jure homogeny is okay -- and it is not.

And why this looks really bad, REALLY bad, is due to things even I, MHA, am afraid to say. Because to say it is to be put into a bag that will take a lifetime to get out of, and though there is such a thing as free speech, the cost/consequence of saying it is too much --- despite it being a truth....

  • Except there isn't "only one supplier". Far from it. Heck, I'm a supplier, and many of my neighbors are suppliers. Some are white and have been doing it for a long time. Others are black and new to the neighborhood. What they tend to have in common is an appreciation for the neighborhood's many positive attributes and upwards trend.

Every serious landlord's aim is to secure income-producing properties, and to obtain the best possible tenants with reliable credit histories and documentable sources of income. There's absolutely nothing insidious or racist about this.

It's specifically against the law to discriminate on the basis of race, so I would hope that you think very carefully about whether there is any evidence of that besides your own fear and loathing before posting any further accusations or allusions.

  • I just want to know how much it ended up going for.

...next time I might get together with a few friends to see if we can outbid MySpace.

  • ACRIS does not yet have a recorded deed.

  • 'Fear and loathing'? No loathing here, friend, lest we get it twisted.... Some fear though -- as explained to CTK....

As I said -- not jumping in or out of that bag. No allusions, no accusations.

  • Too late. You already did.

Thanks. As mentioned in the Tiny Urban Park thread, I think they could build some high end units here and do pretty well.

  • These folks in Bed Stuy are securing vacant land for a community garden from HPD.

As a result, they won't have to worry about the owner deciding to cash out:

  • And notice if you will that the purported development on Franklin has yet to happen. Gone is the opportunity and enhanced quality of life the garden brought to the neighborhood. In its place a green fence with artwork. Go figure. And on the other side of that fence are horrors to behold. Neighbors complain about the mosquitoes and the foul odors and the horrible view; these are people who moved into the building because of the garden, by the way.

  • It is no surprise that the new owners did not want the garden on their land.

Every moment that the gardeners tended to it, led them to becoming more emotionally attached to it. ...leading the new owners to believe that most convenient thing to do is get them out as soon as possible.

Who knows, maybe the property will be sold a few more times before it gets built on.

Have you called HPD yet? I hear they are assigning the lots to garden groups pretty quickly.
