Cat in Associated on 5th — Brooklynian

Cat in Associated on 5th

I was just walking past the Associated on 5th ave and there was a cat walking around in the window. The store was closed with the gate down and the lights off. Does the cat just live in the grocery store? Or is that somebody's orange cat that got trapped in the store and wasn't noticed by the people closing?

  • If they are just closed for the night, I wouldn't worry about it. There are a ton of "store cats" around. If it somehow got locked in for the night, it will survive until they open tomorrow.
  • My personal opinion is that the only reason most stores have cats, is because they also have RATS!
  • hmmm, I'm in that store a couple times a week (milk run, ice cream....arugula...lol) and I can't say I've ever seen a cat in there.
I wouldn't really worry, not like the little guy is gonna go hungry
  • Yeah, I wasn't too worried, just curious. Heck, if I was trapped in a grocery store over night I know I'd have a helluva great time putting together a 10 course meal for my midnight snack.

All stores in NYC have mice at the very least. Having a cat mark it's territory with it's paws and mouth glands as well as other fluids is a good way to keep rodent problems down to a minimum.
  • Lots of places that are clean still battle against mice, rats and cockroaches. Just a fact of NYC life. I'd rather see a rat-chasing cat than the actual rat itself
  • i'd rather see a mouser doing its job
than have the store spraying rat poison

some stores the smell is a bit much tho'
you know before you open the door that a cat lives there

Night Duty Cat was just doing his job. Who else would prevent mice from chewing the Thomas' English Muffins we might buy the next day?
  • and i love all the stores with cats. esp. the "copy cats" at the copy place.

there used to be a place on 7th, in way south slope, a florist, who had two abyssinians. they were gorgeous.

You're thinking of Quade (she's now partnered with Rootstock and is working out of their space further North on 7th). Their names are Tao and Mimi. They were my buddies, but she couldn't keep them in Rootstock, but last I checked they were still alive and well.

Those copy cats are adorable, too.

p.s. Insomnia sucks ass. I was tossing and turning for over an hour and then gave up :(
  • I gave up too.

I remember them. They used to hang out in front of the store and greet people walking by. Pretty cats.

I miss that fat orange cat who lived in the bakery on 7th Avenue that is now a toy store. I think his name was Reggie.
  • His name was Reggie and he was cool. I hope they took him home to spend the rest of his days (he was OLD)
  • speaking of orange cats, did anyone else see the guy with the shaved cat on the leash a few weeks ago in front of the museum? gothamist had a link... here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/c_damage/203501006/
  • zOMG! :P

  • Ok, I still haven't taken the time to figure out how to post a pic inside a post. Cut and paste or something else?

I wish my cats would walk on a leash!
  • it was actually very sad. cat was 19, said the owner, who had something wrong with him (asbergers? dont know) and the cat was shaved, by him (which was obvious) and on a rope with a slip-knot. and the cat kept walking toward eastern parkway and i was freaked that it might go into the street.

not unlike making my cat wear a collar, a harness and leash makes her crouch low to the ground and won't move a muscle.

a friend tried to put her cat into her baby bjorn, but there was the issue with the tail.
  • i was at royal deli/market (the orig, not it's sister) and the little cat who had the kittens a few months ago was passed out sleeping on the freezer with one of those kittens. it's amazing that these kitties can sleep through anything; mine is so skittish that i put shoes on and she jumps.
  • I was in Associated the other day at around 8 and the orange cat was prancing through the aisles. I love cats so it doesn't bother me, but I thought it was against the law to take pets into grocery stores?
  • It's gotta be against dept of health regulations, but it's a total necessity to keep the mice away.

I'm sure many of these stores "employ" cats for night duty, but I'm not used to actually seeing cats walking through the aisles during the day.

Precious are you new to NYC?

I've lived here for about 5 years. So, no. Until the Associated experience I had only ever seen cats in bodegas or stores that don't sell food.
  • There are cats in stores all over Brooklyn........some sell food, many of them don't.

-The Copy Cats on 7th Ave (copier store)
-Mimi and Tao who used to live at Quade (the florist on 7th Ave. - Quade is now part of Rootstock and the cats have been living at home)
    - Jinty and Lucky who live at Krupa Grocery (not a grocery, really - a newspaper/candy store)
    - Brownie who lives at the Hallmark Store on PPW (at least he did - he was WAY old last time I saw him).
    - Chelsea the cat at NYCPet on 7th.
    - Suzie Q and Lou Lou at All4Paws

I'm sure there are plenty of others. Not to mention the dogs!

I only ask because it is extremely common here in Brooklyn - I dont trust the food in a store that doesn't have a cat :)

I don't think you understood my message. Of course some stores have cats. What is not usual, in my experience, is to see a a cat in a supermarket. To spell it out: I have never, until now, seen a cat in a Key Food, a C Town, a Whole Foods or an Associated. The stores you've listed are mainly florists and pet stores - obviously those stores welcome pets
