Burglar on the block

One of my neighbors on 2nd Street posted the following on our street's Google Group:

Hi All,

Hope you all are safe after the storm.

I'm sending out a warning here. We stopped someone who appeared to be trying to enter our Garden Apt.

It was at 3:20pm today. He wore jeans, a nice black coat, large baseball cap, and large glasses. Not much of a description I know. But basically, he fit into normal foot traffic.

He walked his bike to the outside our house. Approached the house with a package (which looks like an empty shipping package bag). He rang our doorbell, waited for someone. No one came. He walked the curb, checked no one was looking. Then, he quickly turned around slipped a glove on and and pullled out something that looked like a key. Kinda acting like he was going into his own apartment.

At this point we happen to see him (out of the parlor floor window) and he had about 15 second under our stoop gate. If we happen to not see him, he could have been there much longer.. I can't determine if anything was taken. Nothing obvious seems to be missing. It is possible that mail was taken out of our box, b/c the mail man had come about 20 minutes before this guy came. Packages could have been taken from behind the gate. Maybe he didn't have enough time...?

When we got outside and asked him what he was doing, he pretended to be getting recycled bottles from our trash (from under our stoop). It was a little creepy. He keep one hand in his coat, and we kept asking him what he was doing. He tried laughing off that we caught him under our stoop. He made a show of going into our recycles can. Then basically quickly walked back to his bike and rode away.
