sketchy hair salon on nostrand
so: does anyone know what is up with "onyx hair stylz nyc/vip custom designs" on nostrand and st. johns?
they're only open from 6pm to midnight, never have any customers, and put out manekins on the sidewalk wearing insane hooker/alien hybrid outfits
this would just be a fun neighborhood quirk except that they also put speakers on the sidewalk and blast music. until midnight. every night.
it's unbearable. i want to call in a noise complaint and i'm hoping this is some kind of secret drug front/brothel so they'll get shut down entirely. the speaker thing is so awful and unnecessary and it's turning me into a horrible person.

1) Many barbershops/hair salons and clothing stores are fronts. Law enforcement likely already knows who is doing what. There was a pretty big raid along Nostrand sometime last year.
2) Always call in noise complaints against businesses that are violating local ordinances. I doubt the city has permitted them to blast music like that, even during the day. While many of us choose to live in mixed residential/commercial buildings we all need to be good neighbors.
3) I'm not sure what your broker told you when you rented your apartment, but you actually live in the much cooler Crown Heights, not Prospect Heights.

As to #3, I was about to post the same thing. That's Crown Heights by a long shot.
But yes - call in a complaint.

My understanding is that it is a couple sharing the space. He is a designer, she does hair. However, she is never there so the business only seems to open for his clothing sales. Since his taste in fashion is "eclectic" (or lacking, depending on whether you actually want clothing that covers you) he doesn't seem to have a lot of business either.
Can't say if it is a front, but given that both businesses are cash intensive, it wouldn't be a stretch to make that assumption.

I've wondered about this place and some of the other barbers on Nostrand. Like the others have said if it bothers you call in a noise complaint. By the way this is in Crown Heights not that hipster want to be utopia of Prospect Heights.
-
I would characterize Prospect Heights not as a "hipster wanna be utopia", but as a "hardcore yuppie enclave" (which is why I love living here).
-
In my view, most hipsters have been priced out of most apartments west of Nostrand since 2009.
-
How about a "hardcore yipster utopia"?

That sounds like a good porn movie title.
