Getting the road on Park Pl repaved...

What kind of beast am I looking to slay here? Has anyone ever gone through the process of trying to get their street repaved? The stretch of road on Park Place between Nostrand and Rogers has so many potholes, large and small, all over the place that you could get seriously hurt if biking late at night (or day for that matter).

    Get in line. The roads in the nabe have generally suffered severely in the last three years. Sterling has exposed trolley tracks and ruts from where they have been removed along the stretch from Bedford to Washington. Some of the potholes have been filled in with concrete by some enterprising soul. I don't think CHN has been paved in at least twenty years.

    Interestingly, much further east (around Kingston/Schenectady) there was a large repaving effort this summer, so maybe it will make its way around with time.

    I hate to break it to you, but paving of roads in this community has not been a priority for DOT. This is starting to change slowly as a result of DOT's focus on special programs like bike lanes and traffic calming. But the concept of paving a street simply because it is pitted, rutted, impossible to travers by car, bike, or foot is fairly low on their priority.

    My anecdotal personal experience with this dates back to 1995. I was living upstate and had purchased my first new car. The weekend after I got it, I drove it home to show my parents. While driving down Nostrand Avenue, I got to the corner of Greene, and in the right lane hit a depression near a manhole cover. I hear a shearing sound, pulled my car over and got out to look. The spoiler on my low-slung car had evidently struck either the pavement or the cover itself, and got caught. It pulled that section of the spoiler backwards, cracking it. I was able to pull the spoiler back into place and slowly drove the rest of the way home. My parents urged me to report the pothole to DOT and to alert them as to the damage to my car. I filed a police report and then had the pleasure of making my first ever insurance claim.

    Today that same depression, with the jutting manhole cover is still at that intersection. In the intervening years, the ground around it has sunk and become rutted as well, so its not nearly as much of an obstacle as it was in 95, but its never been paved by the city. Not once.

    So, good luck to you on this. Unless Park Place is getting a bike lane, being re-striped to reduce the number of cars that can occupy the street at one time, becoming a select bus route, or is being converted to an outdoor plaza, fat chance that DOT will come through to regrade and repave. The best you can hope for is what happened between Frankin and Bedford, where they filled in the area around the manhole covers to bring them back to grade.
