Walking dogs on sidewalks: Bad? — Brooklynian

Walking dogs on sidewalks: Bad?

I just got home after being yelled at and harrassed by another older, African American woman who doesn't want me or my two small dogs walking on the sidewalk in front of their house, or sniffing in the tree well in front of it. I might add that I pick up any poop from the street within literally 3 seconds after it's been deposited there. This is the second time I was asked to move on, and this time I answered back. The script is the same: Keep the dogs off the sidewalk in front of their house because they've been in the neighborhood for a long time, and I should go back to my own neighborhood. I answered that this is my neighborhood, and I refused to "move along" until I was ready.

I feel it's a weird control issue to tell strangers doing nothing wrong what to do, and I don't understand it.

The sidewalks are public, and I'm extremely careful to leave everything as it was. All we are doing is walking slowly by, the dogs sniffing around, which they do everywhere. I feel like these ladies are frustrated by the large piles left behind, of which there are plenty, and are taking it out on me. There are plenty of guys who walk pit bulls off the leash here, and I'll bet $100. they say nothing to them. Even after I show my plastic bags at the ready, it makes no difference.

Anyone else encounter this? How do you handle it? I'm getting fed up. :x

  • to teach her not to mess with you leave poop there.

maybe she thought you were a easy target or something. like some people would never say it to some guys or osmethne.
  • Yeah, she probably sees you as an easy target for misplaced frustration.

I'll go as far as to not let my dog piss on someone's building and/or flowers surround a tree, and I make it a point to not let her poop on the sidewalk, but this lady sounds like she's picking a fight more than anything. If someone's acting irrational, but not dangerously so, I'd say to just ignore them - don't give them the rise that they're looking for.
  • I generally do ignore them, but I'm getting tired of taking the fall for others who don't pick up after their dogs.
And no, I'm not going to leave a poop for her, Armchair! :o

I hear there's a great place for leaving poop on St Marks between Underhill and Washington...

    stop picking on me

/cries like a little school girl.
  • Setting asside all of the old vs. new and go back to your neighborhood stuff (which is just ugly), as you pointed out this woman may be the victim of a lot of large crappy dogs and dog owners and have just decided not to put up with anyone, even the folks who are obviously responsible dog owners. It sucks because neither of you is in the wrong here. You don't want to be picked on for something you haven't done and aren't repsponsible for and she doesn't want to have to clean up after someone else (and their big craptastic dog).

I don't think is as much a control issue, more just reaching the breaking point and pointing the finger at whoever is closest.

It may just be easiest to say "Hi, I'm sje and this is Tiny Non-crappy Dog. I can empathize with what you must go through so I'll try as much as I can to keep Tiny from peeing on your trees and flowers and not depositing on your sidewalk. I'd appreciate it if you understand that Tiny IS A DOG and does like to stop and smell the roses and may pause here from time to time. Understand that he/she is not being disrespectful, and that as your neighbor I don't want to live surrounded by crap either. I'm prepared to clean up after Tiny if she does respond to the call of nature here. Nice meeting you."
  • Homeowner, that is essentially what I said: that I didn't want to live in the midst of dogcrap either, that I picked it up immediately if it occurred {and showed my bags}, and that this was my neighborhood also. Please note that the treewell where the dogs were sniffing had mulch, a tree, but no flowers. My minpin ws dry at that point anyway, we'd been walking for awhile, and neither of them took a crap at all.

Actually, I think she, or anyone else deeply disturbed by dogs walking by their house and sniffing in the treewell, should PUT A FREAKING FENCE AROUND IT. It works.

Actually, thinking about it, this was the third, not second, woman to accost me like this. I must look like an easy target. Oh, so, so wrong...

If a pitbull and a sidewalk full of melted puddin' pops doesn't teach'em...
  • Seriously, when I only had my 26lb minpin, people left me alone. Since I got the little cute chihuahua also, people use me for verbal target practice. It's weird.
  • I have had that happen to me, just a few doors down from where I live. I finally spoke to the woman through the window and said I always clean up after my dog. She still wasn't thrilled with my dog sniffing at the tree in front of her house but she stopped yelling at me.
