bike racks placed in parking spots on franklin ave

Car owners need to understand the immense cost every car adds to the residents of our community: 80% of the gas consumed in this country is for transportation. Bikes consume no gas, only cars and trucks. Gas use is a chief cause of climate change. Superstorm Sandy alone will probably cost us over $100 billion when all is said and done and the majority of residents polled think that climate change contributed to the severity of Sandy. Connecting the dots is critical. It's not just about the rights of new residents versus the perogatives of older residents. It's about the huge costs associated with car use. And I'm not even talking about the number of pedestrians killed by cars, versus the number killed by bikes, the congestion to our streets caused by double parked cars versus double parked bikes (?!?!), etc.

Reminder -- there's a Franklin Ave Bike Corral discussion at the CB8 Transpo Committee meeting tonight:
http://www.streetsblog.org/2013/01/15/brooklyn-community-board-8-franklin-avenue-bike-corral/
WHEN
January 22, 2013 7:00 pmWHERE
CNR-Center Light Healthcare Center
727 Classon Avenue
BrooklynThe bike corral, installed in December after approval by the community board, is the subject of a petition by those who wish to see it removed and replaced with car parking. According to committee co-chair Rob Witherwax, the issue will again be up for discussion at this meeting of the transportation committee.
-
As expected, the transportation committee voted to reaffirm its support for the bike corral. It now goes to the full board, which I expect to concur.
I'm in Vermont at the moment, but The Patch bothered to attend the mtg. They provide a play by play here, and it all seems like it was tedious and well behaved: http://prospectheights.patch.com/articles/live-blog-bike-corral-debate-at-cb8-meeting
-
While it's unfortunate the manner in which it came about, what's good about this brouhaha over the bike corral is that a lot of community people came out to the community board transportation meeting. I would estimate there were over 50 in attendance at a meeting that typically has 7 or 8 attendees. For those who want to create divisions in the community, I feel it was a real defeat. There was a lot of honest face-to-face dialogue and information exchange. Those who want the corral removed instead got the possibility of meters added to the Franklin Avenue commercial strip, the possibility of a handicapped parking spot on each block and a better understanding of the thinking behind the creation of the bike corral. As traffic congestion grows with the improvements in Crown Heights, hopefully more people will turn to dialogue with the transportation committee, rather than petitions, for resolution of their concerns.

This vote night last has now further divided us along racial lines thank you mr co chair . We were always divided captain planet don't fool yourself and like the residence said last night why come out to meetings there is nothing there for us black and disabled residence. We really have little Zelda to thank for this new insult place upon the minority and disabled community of crown heights.
-
If what Capt. Planet says is correct, and there is an opportunity to provide a handicapped parking space on each block, that definitely seems like something for disabled residents and their advocates to come out to meetings for. If the same amount of energy is put into something positive and proactive like this, as was put into the effort to remove the bike rack, there will eventually be more parking available for the people who need and deserve it the most. Any initiative that helps to increase the mobility and independence of our community members is good for people of all races and backgrounds.
-
Why is this a racial issue?
-
chloeroyale is tired of riding on the back of the tandem. And I gather you didn't see the "Whites Only" sign on the bike rack?
-
Eastbloc-
You are either being silly, or that sign is so small that it is seen only by people with microscopes.I have seen bikes of all colors locked to the racks, and bikers of all colors riding said bikes. But I am interested in hearing more from Chloe....

But I am interested in hearing more from Chloe....
im not

Why is it a racial issue because I know u guys are absolutely convinced that there is a level playing field for people of other races because race does not play an issue in anything anymore. The race issue has been completely solved, please please keep believing that. And epiclatered no u don't want to hear about race or you think that those issues are not relevant, it's obvious it's ur world who needs the blacks and the disabled they continue to drag our society down. I will inform the drags on society about joining this blogg or viewing it so they can be enlightened on u guys who run the world
-
In the other areas of the city, where the 7 other corrals have been installed, is it racial in nature?
-
I don't know about the other areas in the city I know it's racial here and directly tied into our gentrification
-
Oh god! Here come the evil racist white kids on bikes run! Run away! They only want to enjoy the diverse neighborhood they live in. But their evil AND racist!
Seriously your falling back on the racial card? Whats next there goes the neighborhood argument?
-
There is no consideration for the disabled but who needs them they are entitlement junkies! And of course don't pay taxes this blogg really have people of like mines, and are anti black and anti the disabled and of course as long as u don't say the n word and other vulgur language you can insult the blacks and the minorities and of course the best part is the masses really don't know who you are! So yeah it's a win win!!

Is this MHA's mom?
-
Chloe-
So, if something happens that (in your opinion and others) does not advance the interests (or somehow sets back the interests) of the disabled and/or the poor and/or a specific hue of people , then it should not be done in Crown Heights? Is it ok elsewhere?
-
Eastbloc it does not matter who Chloe is one thing that is clear is that I'm black!
-
Chloe-
While you may be black, please be careful to only speak for yourself. While you may be disabled (or care deeply about those who are), please be careful to only speak for yourself.
I say this because there seems to be a lot of groups out there that purport to represent "the disabled" or "black people", yet each group seems to be different, and has different ideas of how to best advance the status of the people they represent.
-
I have no problem with you being black, Chloe. You're the only one who is making that an issue.
-
Why not bike corrals before parking for the disabled I guess it's a good move if your not disabled . Every neighborhood is unique and has special characteristics and have special needs and these things should be taken into consideration before decisions are made. In this case little Zeldathey did not even Go next door to hear feedback from her neighbors much less the residence. And since I have my ears open and am privy to info trust me some of the merchants are very unhappy with little Zelda and are happy happy that their business is leaving launch pad. When I was canvassing about the bike corral one of the residence said to me I don't go to Franklin ave anymore because they have nothing on the ave for us
-
Eastbloc please !
-
Chloe-
Argueably, it was not the job of Little Zelda to do outreach to everyone. Their job was merely to outreach to people who supported the idea, and then bring it before CB8.It was CB8's job to consider the proposal, and decide whether it caused more harm than good. CB8 seems to have concluded that they believe it does more good than harm.
It now has concluded this TWICE. The time when they initially approved it, and last night when they heard your arguments opposing it.
-
Why not I'm privy to more Info than u I'm deeply in the mix on this one her petition was placed in her store and she admits blacks don't go in her store so blacks were not included in her initial petition she did not go even to speak to the church membership directly across the street i was the one who went to the merchants and they told me the same speel we never knew about it one merchant showed me an email dated the day before the installation of the bike system and this merchant said that was the extent of the notification given and the letters of support from candy rush and taste buds they where the very first people to sign the petition for it to be removed and had some choice words for little Zelda u can email me privately there is even more stuff brewing

-
Now why not does it seem reasonable that u live on a planet with many people and u have a idea u market it to the choir only !!! And no one else is incorporated in this plan only u and the people like u. And it comes to pass and the other nobodies that share the planet with u should just stand there and be silent because u and the choir are truly running things.thats what happened when little Zelda's did this to us. Don't get me wrong cb8 needs to answer for this too but little Zelda is now know as a business that is not community friendly
-
Why not mr witherwax who is there to push out the old chairman dr mondisir did not even view my petitions he asked me where they were? I had to tell him the so called co chair that your district manager Michelle george was given the petitions. He did not view them before the meeting the fix was in. The residence who live next door to little Zelda stated how this impacted their lives mr witherwax could careless because those lives don't matter of course those people are black! So that's just some of the nasty truth about this bike corral as I was leaving the meeting the residence who live next to the corral said they say we never come out but when we come there is nothing there for us
-
Capt. Planet stay on your planet it's obviously better there
-
On the flip side of Chloe's opinion, there are plenty of people around who think that the bike corral is very community friendly and will show our support for Little Zelda's by patronizing them. And since it seems like any responsible business owner or involved community member in the area would be privy to when community board meetings are, and the bike corral was reportedly discussed at multiple meetings, I don't see why Little Zelda's should be thrown under the bus for anyone else's lack of involvement in community affairs.
