AW-
I just use this thread to post articles and snazzy maps about NYC poverty. You may need to figure out WHY things occur elsewhere.
...there are a lot of theories and explanations.
-
My situation is not unique at all. Poor parents with no education. growing up poor etc.. been repeated through out American history.
My friends who made it out the with me were from immigrant backgrounds.
The situation is repeated all over NYC as a whole and America.
I knew alot of poor kids in school from all over NYC, they did pretty well for themselves vs the local poor kids who were born here generation after generation.
The system sets up the kids who thinks everyone owes them something a chip on their shoulders. The man's fault for them being poor. Instead of doing something for themselves. They probably think it should be given to them.
I blame squarely on the liberals in power in NYC. If you give something to someone they won't feel they earn it, they would expect more and more.
That is why if you look at charity in 3rd world. The begging bowl didn't do so well.
Look at the African economies that is growing when competition came from China with infrastructure investments etc... vs charity from the west the economies are growing pretty well.
Now the west is claiming neo colonialism lol. When people don't get something for free works wonders, trade or exploitation in the western mind. It makes people want to work for more things.
People who don't want to work and just sit around and bitch and want more and blame it on someone else who wrong them etc..

There are certainly examples of that.
...Needless to say, others have opposing explanations as to why the northeast corner of Brooklyn is red in the above snazzy map.
-
look at the immigrants from Caribbean and African the story changes.
They are immigrants who can see what the opportunities can offer unless they become too Americanize.
They haven't been culturalize to the social system, if some of them are thanks to liberals they are screwed!!!

Problem with alot of people they are waiting for government LOL. Daddy government does nothing for you. You could wait forever and nothing will happen. If you are lucky they'll have some pork for your district etc.. other than that they are just talking heads pretending to do jobs.
Don't bother with the government if you want change do something about it. Instead of waiting and waiting. Generations of people in the ghetto been waiting.

today's article covers the issue of people who work, but don't earn much money:
There seems to be a lot of people in this situation.
-
It was going to happen eventually.
...someone created a tool that shows you the median income by subway stop!
-
It seems the suburbs are now the home to lots of poor people:
-
Domestic violence is often a close correlary to poverty.
While lots of press is being devoted to how Brooklyn is getting nice restaurants and has soaring housing costs, it doesn't necessarily improve the lives of those who are in a miserable relationships, and in miserable patterns of behavior and thought.

An article on how poverty is shaping up on the national scale.

Soon, there will be so many people who meet the present definition of poverty, that a new definition will evolve.
Something like "extreme poverty" will be defined, and will be the only thing that gets press, because there is only so much sympathy and anti-poverty funding and resources to go around.
