Slice pizza place coming to Franklin and EP
I took this shot while standing beside the site of the new condos:
Look behind the Sanitation car. The place with the For Rent sign, actually isn't.
Reliable source informs me that a lease has been signed, and that the new tenants will open a traditional, not fancy pizza place: Slices. Chicken parm heros. Garlic knots.
.....think of Antonio's on Flatbush, not Pete Zaaz or Barbachino.

Good news. I'm not always willing to spend 17 dollars for a pizza

Construction is moving along nicely.
Two adjacent storefronts are presently under construction at 798 Franklin:
-One will be called a Hummus Station, and (in addition to Hummus) will offer beer and wine.
-The other will be a pizza place. Rumored to be a location of Not Rays Pizza.
This photo looks to be a few years old:

Cheap pizza is cool, but we already have a good amount of those in the near area (latest being Rosco's). I'm much more excited for Hummus Station. The only thing similar I can think of on the west side of Crown Heights proper is the Pasha Pizza Pita place on Classon and Bergen, and their Mediterranean offerings aren't really anything to write home about.
-
I can't say I am that excited about pizza either, but I do think pizza will do really well in that location.
New Yorkers eat a lot of pizza when it is around, despite not being excited.
-
I'll order from this pizza place. Roscoes hasnt learned how to make a decent slice IMO. Always so floppy
-
If the rumors are true about it becoming a "Not Rays", then they should know how to do ok pizza.
...I also expect them to be less expensive than Roscoe's.
Here's the thread on the Hummus place: http://www.brooklynian.com/forums/topic/new-falafel-place-on-franklin-ave

The sad/scary thing about the upcoming hummus place is that it's being opened by the owners of MySpaceNYC Realty. It's not MySpaceNYC renting the space to someone who will open the restaurant, it is MySpaceNYC opening a restaurant of their own. Their greed knows no bounds.
If you do ever consider eating there, please realize you would be fueling MySpaceNYC's efforts as they continue to exorbitantly raise rents in this neighborhood. Here's one small example of the rapid rent hikes they are responsible for, and there are MANY more instances of the same with their residential properties: http://www.brooklynian.com/forums/topic/starbucks-on-franklin-ave
Surely you can satisfy your hunger elsewhere - somewhere that wouldn't require you to swallow your own conscience with every bite.
-
At the very least, you should know the hand that feeds you. If you want to know more about the upcoming hummus place, and the people who will own/run it, stop into MySpaceNYC realty and talk with Guy or Rob. See what you think.
-
I am not sure where you are getting your info about MySpace owning one of the businesses, but will point out that the pizza and the hummus places are going into adjacent storefronts.
The site on the right now sports a sign that says "Owner: Elcorno Martin"
He is listed as #27, on this list of the worst landlords in Brooklyn

http://pubadvocate.nyc.gov/landlord-watchlist/buildings?neighborhood[]=89#mapI'm shocked there's not a thread about him on here somewhere - he's a slumlord. He was even featured in the most recent article about Crown Heights/Gentrification.
Thanks, whynot, for pointing out he owns the space. Given that he allows mice, roaches and bedbugs to populate the apartments he owns, I shudder to think what his cleanliness standards would be for something non-residential. No way would I ever purchase food from such a place. His vermin friendly stance forced us to break our lease with him 2 years ago.
-
MySpace owner is renting the storefront from the building owner and opening the hummus place. Will own the business, not the building.
-
Ok. That makes sense that the Pizza place is uninvolved.
I have heard that the pizza place is going to be another location of a small chain of pizza places.

The health department can be quite strict on vermin infestation on restaurants when they want to.
-
Yes, very rarely (if ever) will the DOH accept an excuse from a restaurant owner that the vermin are the fault of the landlord, and therefore "nothing can be done".
Whoever operates this pizza place will have the obligation of keeping it up to code.

He is, indeed, a slumlord. My apartment was full of roaches as long as my fingers, TONS of mice, no heat, no running water...pigeons in the bathroom! It was disgusting. I loved my first NYC apartment for the reasons everyone loves their first living-on-their-own NYC apartment, but it was a hell hole. And complaints did nothing. Calling in inspectors did nothing. 311 did nothing.
I once paid my rent through his bullet proof glass standing in 2 inches of standing water that had leaked through his own office's ceiling. So at least he worked in a place as shitty as I lived.

...apparently there were mentions of him on threads but nothing big...

Brooklynian might not be the best place to see if a potential landlord is a slumlord. Here's some Yelp reviews that also say he should be avoided:
http://www.yelp.com/biz/e-martin-rentals-brooklyn
In addition to do doing online research, folks that have not rented in NYC should also take a friend who have had experience finding an ok apartment in a "mixed income building" (I.E. Where some of the tenants are rent stabilized, or receive Section 8).

Its not pizza anymore. It now frozen yogurt
-
Thanks P&B!
Do you kow when the new
pizzaYogurt place is supposed to open?Is it going to be a chain location?
-
Idk.... I know it is being opened by the same Israeli dudes who were going to open the pizza place.
-
Anyone have any updates on the yogurt place?
-
May 5, 2013:
A banner has been placed in front of the storefront. It States "Coming soon: Yogurt"

Due to the fact that this is no longer going to be a pizza place, I've decided to give Yogumoo it's own thread:
