Terrible smell lower park slope / gowanus - toxic??
I have lived in the neighborhood about 8 years, and every so often there is this disgusting smell that wafts up from the gowanus area. My guess is one of the industrial plants or work on the F train in that area. Recently it has been much worse.
smells like burnt toast / burning hair. IT's really f***ing strong today, almost like the snow is making it worse. IT has like a 10 block radius minimum
I'm wondering if it isn't pretty toxic, it smells horrible. other people must have noticed this

I noticed a sewage-like smell while outside a couple hours ago. I assumed it was the sewage overflow into the Gowanus canal due to the rain/snow.

Were you standing in one of Park Slope's billion piles of dog shit that <some> lazy owners can't be bothered to pick up?
-
Exactly. Park Slopes sidewalks are coated in dog fecal mater.

I live on 11th between 2nd and 3rd and I smell it too. I first thought it might be related to the work on the subway, but then one day as I walked past that building on 2nd and 10th that sits directly under the aqua-duct I noticed what appeared to be a bread factory.
As an aside, smelling burning toast is often a symptom of an impending seizure...so hopefully not everyone is having seizures in Gowanus.

Its the runoff from the snow stirring up the canal.
Nothing new, same bad smell as usual. It's just we haven't had any real warm days to stink up the joint.

<Bump!>
Anyone else smelling that weird smell this AM? -
I was up near 9th St. It woke me up early.

It was remarkably nasty this morning. Though I assume it's the Gowanus, it didn't smell like the Gowanus usually does. I walked across the bridge a few times this weekend and the water levels were especially low and the smell was pungent but it just smelled swampy. This morning's smell was different, more like sewage then swamp water. Luckily the rain is cleaning up the air now.

I grew up here and the smell has always been there since i can remember I am 61 so yes the smell has been there for ever..:/

The Gowanus is extra fragrant right now. The eau de toilet is back in da slope. :-XX
