Its interesting to me that this history always gets forgotten. The presence of people of color in Brooklyn dates back before the founding of the city. Whenever someone claims that central Brooklyn has only been inhabited by blacks since the 60's it's like nails on a chalkboard.

1660s?

The Dutch West India Company introduced slavery in 1625 with the importation of eleven black slaves into New Amsterdam (present-day New York City). All the colony's slaves, however, were freed upon its surrender to the British.[12]
