cleaning up the mess on bergen....

so, in rescuing my car from its alternate side purgatory this morning on bergen street, i passed a sanitation truck and about a dozen workers in front of a brownstone on bergen between vanderbilt and carlton. the workers were in full-on coveralls with respirators, and there were two of them at the front door. the door was open, and just inside the house was stacked - STACKED TO THE CEILING - with newspapers, magazines and assorted crap. the workers were raking it out and filling the truck, while a crowd gathered outside. i guess i assume that some pack rat lived there and possibly passed away? anyone know? looks like the heights might have our own collyer brothers!

    yeah, same place? i thought this place didn't look as run-down on the outside as what was described in the dog thread.....

    I walked by this morning too - there was three vans from the Dept of Health one garbage truck and about 20 workers using pick axes to get through the debris pilled up between to the two entrance doors. I feel bad for the neighbors on either side the stench and bugs from this clean up will be massive.

    Hey Laura do you know if there were cats there because i used to see the boxes of cat litter there outside that house.

    wow, so i wonder what the legal obligations of the landlord and the city are, then. like, DOS and the health department are there just tearing everything out...will the city take over the building? just clean all the trash out of it? what's the extent to which the city agencies (that poot refers to in the other thread) are allowed to go?

    I wonder if he owned the place - I can't imagine a landlord putting up with that.
    no clue what the relevant local laws are but I'm guessing he's either been committed and/or the house has been condemned. anyone?

    If the owner is mentally unstable then they will contact his family, if he or she has no one then the courts appoint a guardian for the owner and they decide what happens. Usually if the person is unable to live alone they will sell the house and use the cash to help the person out (i.e., assisted living facility, etc.). Unfortunately that was at the heart of that corruption scandal with the judges in Brooklyn. I hope he has family to help him.
