Car + ATM = Collateral Damage @ Gen — Brooklynian

Car + ATM = Collateral Damage @ Gen

It appears at some point early Tuesday AM a car or truck going eastbound on St Marks at Washington Ave lost control, hopped the curb and smashed into Gen's (sushi restaurant) outdoor ATM - destroying a security shutter and planter - and doing considerable damage to the ground floor brick wall.

Apparently the driver fled; based on the damage, he or she has a seriously wrecked front-end.

There appears to have been no shower of $20 bills...

  • I saw this this am too. Did it happen over night or around 8:20 this am? I didn't notice it when I walked my dog past it twice around 8:15 but when I left for work at 8:30 the cop car was there and a bunch of people were standing around looking at the scene.

  • Happened after 8 pm (when I used the ATM - for the last time I suppose) and before 7:45 am when I walked the pup. Guessing it was in the wee hours but will have to wait for residential security cams on St Marks to hopefully show a smashed-up car driving off the sidewalk.

Unfortunately there was no camera trained on the ATM itself. Hopefully the brickwork won't force Gen to close during repairs.

    Maybe someone heard/saw something?

  • It wouldn't surprise me if one of the merchants has a a camera that caught some of this accident.

Cameras aren't great, but they are better than nothing.

I would like the pct to put some effort into catching such folks.

  • Are we sure this was an accident? Sometimes people try to ram ATMs to get them to spill out the green stuff. I think many ATMs actually are built not to spit out twentys if rammed.

  • If the driver did this with said intent, I believe it is safe to say they are not bright.

    Very, very, very not bright.

(I think it is rude to call people morons)
