Trouble for Washington Commons? 434 Washington Ave

Photo: Timeout NY
It seems that when the bar opened several years ago, the application promised food would be served and that no mention of outdoor space was made.
However, no food is served and outdoor space is used.
Neighbors and the people at CB8 are not pleased, and have complained to the Liquor Authority.
Here's the kicker:
Washington Common's lic expires on Sunday, March 31, 2013, and so far there is no word from the liquor authority as to what they plan to do.
...they could have to temporarily close while this is resolved.
Or, they could receive word that their lic has been granted despite the concerns of CB8 and the neighbors.
We shall know soon....

I really like that bar. The outdoor space is loud, but not rowdy; nevertheless I certainly wouldn't want to live upstairs or next door.
-
They were indeed closed "temporarily" as of last night.
-
They are closed until 4/12. Saw a sign on the gate this am on my way to work.
-
I suspect that they will re-open, but am not sure they will be able to continue to use their backyard.
-
Thanks Arches!
DNA wrote: If upheld by the State Liquor Authority, the compromise renewal plan approved by CB8's board late Monday would force the bar to tear out seats in its pretty and profitable beer garden, and shut down outdoor service by 11 p.m., at least two hours earlier than at comparable local establishments.
So, it is now time for predictions!
At the request of CB8, will the SLA force Washington Commons to abide by the terms outlined above?
Or, will the SLA come up with its own version of a plan?
So far, the SLA has taken CB8 concerns into account to the degree that it has forced the establishment to close temporarily; it didn't mail them the new permit merely as a result of receiving a check.

Nooooooo!!!
I came here just to find out if this rumor is true
This is my favorite bar in all of NYC. It better reopen.... -
Per the sign this am they are reopening today.
-
I volunteer to stop by tonight and see if their backyard is open.
If it is open, I will drink two beers in the name of research.
....the things I do for you people! You should appreciate them!
-
Facebook says they're open.
If we didn't have a Nets game we'd be there too.......for research
-
Has anyone actually seen weed smoking going on there? Cause I haven't. Nor have I heard about anyone hurling beer bottles but then again it's a bar.
-
I am pleased to report that Washington Commons, complete with outdoor garden is open once again!
-
Weed smoking outdoors in Crown Heights? Hide the children!

The SLA site indicates that a full lic was issued on April 8, 2013. It is valid until March 31, 2015.
Lic 1219206
Cert 822007No discipinary history is reported.

So, it appears that Washington Commons is able to resume business as usual.
Is anyone aware of Washington Commons having to close early?

the entire neighborhood smelled like weed last night

This is one of the reasons that CBs are merely advisory, and entities like the SLA (Dept of City Planning, etc) have the ultimate power.
Even if the SLA chooses to listen to the CB, this tactic will essentially $erve the owners of the current bars (who already have 4 AM lics), and discourage new entrants.
...By selecting Washington Ave and Vanderbilt as "over saturated", it may also encourage potential bars to locate on Nostrand and Kingston.
Note: They could obviously choose to not locate in CB8 all together, but I am being CB8 focused on purpose.

Tonight's CB8 mtg filled in some of the missing pieces.
While readers have may have been led to conclude that Washington Commons briefly had to close while the SLA considered the complaints of the neighbors, that it is not at all true.
Basically the people who run the establishment let the lic expire, and then renewed it. Seems like an oversight. That's it. End of story. The SLA has approved use of its outdoor space until 4 a.m.
The neighbors and the CB HOPED that the delay was in response to their concerns, but that wasn't the reason.
THe reason seems to be that the owners simply didn't send in the application and fee on time.
The concerns of the neighbors weren't taken into account, and the SLA renewed the application despite the request of the CB to wait.
The bar owners are presently in mediation with the block association. If this mediation doesn't go well, the block association can ask the SLA for help, but they will be going against a lic that has just been renewed "without prior disciplinary action" until 4 AM.
Note: I believe the bar already voluntarily closes the back area prior to 4 AM. Midnight, I think.

A lot of bars do this. I was at one bar in Manhattan that shut down the back patio at 10! We were none to pleased about it. But hey at least some bars try.

I am beginning to conclude the owners of Washington Commons aren't real bright.
Who lets their LIC expire by accident, and risks having to reapply from scratch?

Yeah...and they own other places too. Am I correct in them also owning 4th Street Pub and Fulton/Grand? Or am I mixing people up...
-
Yup, they also own 4th Avenue Pub, Fulton Grand, Third Avenue Ale House in Manhattan, plus the Graham in Williamsburg.
Howdy, Stranger!
