Bars might be forced to close at midnight!

According to The Gothamist community board 8 is trying to fore bars to close at Midnight. http://gothamist.com/2013/04/10/prospect_heights_community_board_wa.php

Now, I think drinking till the sun comes up is a proud NYC tradition. I think this is yet another kneejerk reaction to a changing neighborhood. A reaction that only slow down economic growth and discourage development. If your really bothered by bar and city noise Upstate is thattaway.

It would appear that whynot posted this in another topic!

  • Rest easy.

The community board is merely advisory; the SLA is under no obligation to listen to them.

Rumors of them ruling the world are exaggerations.

  • But when the CB dissuades bars from opening, that's a problem.

  • In this instance, it merely dissuaded a bar from changing to new ownership (Minor Arcana was going to become owned by Freddy's)

At times, CBs become against additional bars not because they are "pro-peace and quiet" but because the membership is composed of EXISTING bar owners who don't want additional competition.

    Then, we have a problem.

...and we gain an understanding of why the supposed utopia of local control is not always a good thing.

  • i don't know anything about this particular application, but the premise here might be off. if this bar is located within 500 feet of three other bars (or bar/restaurants), then the SLA has to specifically decide that the liquor license is "in the public interest." And that's when the SLA gives more deference to the CB and its understanding of the local version of the "public interest." This seems especially the case where there have been problems reported with other licenses held by the applicant (as the gothamist story suggests).

in fact, i'm going to say that it seems odd, how this story was reported, and perhaps there are unreported details that might explain it better. whynot, you seem to be making a thinly veiled allegation that there are conflicts of interest at work here. do you have any facts to report? in my experience with CB8, the current bar & restaurant owners on the board seem supportive of new ones, and sensitive to legitimate business needs. and this makes sense, because when they're up for renewal, they'll have an easier time getting what they want if the board has set precedent for it.

  • I was just waxing about CBs in general, not ours specifically.

    But, I'll jabber about CB8:

The CB8 SLA Committee seems to have become progressively more worried about the impact of bars over the past few months, as more and more applications are filed.

They seem visibly bothered that they are not being listened to more by the SLA.

It is my impression that CBs overall are occupied by people who wish to have more control and power than is actually present in a Cb seat.

So, on the somewhat rare occasions I attend, it is partly to see people struggle to stop change that I view as inevitable. I am, admittedly, a somewhat twisted individual in this regard.

...the rest of the time, I just get my info from sources I deem reliable.
