out of control hedges on Park and Carlton

Has anyone noticed how far out the hedge on the corner of Park Place and Carlton (NW corner) has grown? It is crazy - hangs out about 3 feet over the sidewalk leaving about 2-3 feet between it and the tree on the sidewalk. What can be done? who owns that property? Are there any roving gangs of hedge trimmers?

My friend James said he would post about this but he left town for a few days so the torch is passed.

thats sorta nitpicky, dude. those hedges are def overgrown, but the only part that really gets out in the way are tendrils of new growth.

i say if it botheres you so much, go get some trimmers and go to work
  • Not nitpicky. Pedestrians have a hard enough time competing with bikers for sidewalk space (sorry Rhodamine). Is this in front of a house? Shouldn't be too hard to ring a bell and find the owner.

nah, i just thought it was funny that someone would come online to complain about overgrown hedges, heh. just ring the buzzer, call 311 or cut it yourself.

as for peds having a hard time competing with bikers for sidewalk space, ill be the first to agree with you... adult cyclists that ride on sidewalks should be smacked (or at least yelled at). not only is it illegal, its about as annoying as peds walking in the bike-lane, and god knows i yell at those, so...
  • Heard. Still, I think posting about this is totally appropriate (I would say that, wouldn't I?). "Just ringing the buzzer" sounds simple, but actually confronting an unknown neighbor, even in a friendly way, takes some courage. There's a possibility that somebody on this board will know the owner. At the very least, we may find out that other people have the same concern, so when the buzzer does get rung, the buzzee can say, "people in the neighborhood have been asking about that hedge..."

yeah, maybe youre right. perhaps my opinion was colored by reading all sorts of tremendously pointless drivel on other messageboards all morning instead of working... heh.
  • I bet 311 would give you the lowdown if the property owner is required to do squat or start cutting.
  • Good luck if you call 311. The other day there was a huge branch that had fallen in the middle of Carlton Ave. so I decided to be a good samaritan and call 311 to alert the powers that be. The dispatcher made it so unpleasant-- she was basically QUESTIONING me in an accusatory way about the exactly way the tree was lying and when it happened and where it was located (I didn't have an exact street address but live on that block so I could estimate the street addresses). She made it so unpleasant that I told her I was regretting my decision to be helpful and call.
  • Thats too bad, 311 used to be such a great service I guess it was only a matter of time before it denegrated to the levels of other services in the city ( eg. police, mta, dot, dob, etc).

The edges are a little bit over grown but they don't bother me. I pass that corner every day and love the fact that probably the first thing you see coming out of the subway....a house with edges! Doesn't that give you a good feeling for the neighborhood?

I know one of the owners in that co-op building. I will bring this matter to his attention.
