OKAY, PRODOGALSON, YOU DID QUITE WELL!
1. NO ONE knows why it is called a circle. It was built as a memorial to two WW1 heros, Bartel & Pritchard. The mystery of why it is called a circle goes on.
2.October 1941. Rumor had ir that the steel was sold to Japan and they used it for munitions in WW2.
3. Coney Island is a Peninsula. It was once an Island cut off from land by Coney Island Creek. That part was filled in when the Belt Pkwy was built.4. The Dodgers started out as the Brooklyn Americans and had two different Ballparks in the slope. They were called Washington park. When they moved to Eastern Park after the lastest Washington park burned down, people had to "Dodge" trolley cars to get to the ballpark. Hence the name "Trolley Dodgers" which was later reduced to plain old Brooklyn Dodgers. I will not mention the name of the BUM that moved them to LA because it makes my BP go up.
5. 39!!!! Furillo 6, Hodges 14 Snider 4, etc:
6. Red Barber (His sidekick for years in Brooklyn was Connie Desmond)
7. Mayor LaGuardia read the funnies over the radio during a newspaper strike.
8. SUIT but it was Abe Stark who later became Brooklyn Borough President
9. Manual/Erasmus and later Brooklyn Tech/Boys High. A double header. Manual used to have a Pep Rally the night before at the RKO prospect on 9th Street.
10. Streisand-Erasmus, Diamond-Lincoln, Manilow-Eastern District. Also Robert Merrill went to New Utrecht High. & I believe Danny Kaye went to Erasmus -
Hey Patsy, Is Nathan's closed because of damage from Sandy???

Pardon me for hogging the Blog but I just wanted to share this with you. When I was a very small lad living on 12th Street between 5th & 6th Ave. I used to walk down to 5th Ave and try to climb up the support beams for the 5th Ave EL. It was a criss cross pattern so easy to get up. Of course I only got up about 3 feet off the ground but at that age it was almost like James Cagney on the top of the gas tanks yelling " Hey Ma, look at me. top of the world". Okay so you do not remember the movie either. Oh well, it is tough getting old!!! 8-[

Hi Everyone!
Can you believe that even more snow fell and that we expect still another 5 inches??? There is a mountain of snow on the baseball and softball fields and the games have all been postponed. Wouldn't surprise me if they are completely cancelled and the season washed out.
What did I ever do to deserve this??
Special thanx to Warren for the trivia q's & a's. Danny Kaye grew up in East New York and dropped out of Jefferson. Public School 149 on Sutter Avenue is named after him.
Well, glad the weather is a lot nicer in other parts of the Land.
Be good!

Hello all & HOORAY! I finally got a chance to watch our local high school team play softball!
Humboldt had a double header as the junior varsity & varsity defeated powerhouse Central High. The JV has an awesome pitcher.* Varsity has a strong hitting lineup - in fact the opposing coach ordered the clean up batter to be walked with the bases full!
An off duty umpire stopped by and he told me it was evident to him that I looked like someone just itching to watch softball. He could clearly see the enthusiasm in my face as I had quite a good time. Darn thing though was that the temperature got cold as the afternoon wore on and I freezed my old butt. Got home, ate dinner, slept well, and woke up refreshed.
* sadly, the neighborhood school does not have a good reputation & some of its best athletes transfer to other schools - Humboldt has lost some darn good athletes that way over the years. I hope this gifted pitcher stays here.

Hi everyone ~ Happy Friday.
Thanx Patsy - Spring has finally arrived as it is now 62F and will get warmer. Almost all of the snow melted.
Our area softball field is on artificial turf and is perfectly OK. However, our baseball field is on natural grass and the snow/ice destroyed part of it. Coach says the field might be ready by next week but several games have had to be cancelled.
Oh well - there's always next year.

Everyone have a fabulous weekend.

Hello All, Patsy, we are okay or as the old saying goes "Fair to middlin". Not feeling to well these days and I have Doctor appointments up the kazoo! Saw my Gastro guy yesterday. All my Polyps (he said double digits) were removed and were benign. However, there is one flat Polyp that he wants to go back in and try to finish getting the rest of it out. Meanwhile my sinuses, teeth, mouth, tongue and lips all hurt. Whether it is a sinus problem or allergies???who knows. I will see my GP on Monday and see if he can help. Next one is the Endocronologist who I believe wants to do a biopsy on my Thyroid. I have to get the Gastro Dr. and him on the same page so that I do not have to stay off the Warfarin too long. If I am off it too long my Cardiologist will have a fit. Sounds like General Hospital. They took the soaps off the TV and made me a living soap Opera. Meantime we are still having people look at the house. The prospective buyers AND the Real Estate agents all rave about what a beautiful house we have but no one has made an offer! #-o

Happy May Day!

Enjoy the day!

Memories of Prospect Park when I was Lad:
Walking up ninth street with my Dad, stopping at Lewnies on PPW, buying a bag of Peanuts, sitting on a park bench inside the ninth street entrance and feeding the peanuts to the squirrels.
Taking my brand new (used) bike up to the Park and riding on the bike paths.
Walking through the park to Ebbetts field to watch the Dodgers.
During WW2 seeing the servicemen on duty in the sheep meadow and up on Lookout Mountain where the artillery and search lights were located. Many of the Park Slope girls got VERY friendly with the GI's stationed there.
Walking through the Park to Park Circle and watching Sunday baseball games. I fondly remember the Good Humor man who came with the Ice Pack on his back and sold Ice Cream Pops & Cups. I especially liked the Creamsicle Pops.
The Prospect Park Zoo which despitethe critics, was a great Animal Display to see.
Getting on line around the Hot House on Easter Sunday to see the Easter Cross made up of Easter Lillies.
Going to the Botanical Gardens (only if accompianed by an adult) and looking at all the beautiful plants.
If there is one constant in Brooklyn it is the presence of beautiful Prospect Park!!! =DB

OH NOOOOOO!
Old Man Winter came back!
We have one inch of snow outside at the moment and 18 inches of snow just south of the Twin Cities.
Pardon me while I vent ~ arrrrr||||||arrrrrr!!!!!
-
Well, instead of going outside to watch softball, I shall have to think over my own memories of Prospect Park.
I, too, loved to feed animals there, esp the ducks and swans. I would buy a container of Planter's Peanuts just for that purpose. Baseball games and football at the Parade Grounds were always fun.
For some reason I was always attracted to the Well House:

On Sundays, I would go to Look Out Hill, take my Walkman, and listen to Chris Whent's show on WBAI or Classic Guitar show on WQXR. Bird watching, people watching, enjoying the smell of the fresh air - Ah, what a time!
-
Saturday - Cinco de Mayo weekend here in St Paul's West Side. Usually there is softball and a large amount of activity in this largely Hispanic neighborhood. But the fields are wet, no players are to be found, and the mood has dampened for what is usually a huge fest.
Hopefully the skies will clear and people will go out to have fun. Meantime. I've got some Mexican food all set for lunch/dinner later on and it will be tasty.
Everyone have a great weekend!
-

Here I am. Here I am! We got a buyer for our house!!! We will be very busy combining our usual deluge of Medical appointments and now trying to get the house ready to move. We have already accepted an apartment in the Independent living place we are going to. We take posession in a couple of weeks. That means we have to disect a house we have been living in for 16 years in a very short time. Our closing on our house will be May 29th.
More later. 8-[
